She died 8-19-1872 in Jersey County, IL. She is buried at Fieldon Cemetery, Richwood Township, Jersey County, IL. George Kessler later married Margaretha Horn. She was the daughter of Philip Horn. She was born in 1844 in Germany, and died 12-31-1928 in Jersey County, IL. She is buried at Fieldon Cemetery, Richwood Township, Jersey County, IL. ---------------------- George Kessler and his first wife Elizabeth had these children-Matilda Kessler, Anna Kessler, and William Kessler. George Kessler and his second wife Margaretha (Horn) Kessler had 5 children-Christian George Kessler, George John Kessler, Emma Margaretha Kessler, Freda Gertrude Kessler, and Louisa Johanna Kessler. (1) George and Elizabeth Kessler's daughter Matilda Kessler married - John Horn, merchant tailor, commenced business in April 1881. He does all kinds of work in his line, and is the only representative of this branch of business in Fieldon.       John Horn was born January 29, 1850 in the Empire of Germany. His parents were Philip and Gerdraud (Myer) Horn, natives of Germany. His father died in Germany at age 63. His mother is still living, at Ardon, Madison county, Ill., now 53 years old. At the age of 13 years John began to learn the tailor's trade with his father, with whom he worked seven years. He then started to this country, taking passage on the steamer at Hamburg, and landing at New York after being on the water 14 days. He came from New York by rail to St. Louis, and from there went to Sparta, Randolph county, Ill., where he worked at his trade two months. From there he went to Evansville, Ind., working at his trade about nine months, and then he went back to St. Louis and worked one year. In the spring of 1872 he went to Salem, Ill., where he worked two years, and from there went to Evansville, Ind., and went into business for himself. Not being successful there, he returned to St. Louis, stayed there about one year, and in the fall of 1875 went to Atchison, Kan., where he worked several months, and again returned to St. Louis, where he remained six months. In July 1876 he started for the old country by way of New York, on the steamer Otter, sailing for Bremen. He arrived there about August 1st, and remained there four years, during all of which time he worked at his trade. In March 1881 he returned to this country and located at Fieldon, where he has since resided. Mr. Horn has been married twice, first to Margaret Hagen, a nataive of Germany, to whom two children were born, Willie and one that died. His present wife was Matilda Kessler, daughter of George Kessler. By this marriage there is one child, Anna. Mr. and Mrs. Horn are members of the German Lutheran church. He died 7-18-1936 in Jersey County, IL He married Julia Theresa Ballard. She was born in 1894 and died 1-3-1984. John Walter Horn and his wife Julia Theresa (Ballard) Horn are both buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyvile, IL. John Walter and Julia Theresa (Ballard) Horn had a son-Paul Edward Horn. ------------------------------ John Walter and Julia Theresa (Ballard) Horn's son - Paul Edward Horn, 94, died at 1:38 a.m. Monday, Sept. 11, 2006, at his home. Born Oct. 20, 1911, in Jerseyville, he was the only child of John Walter and Julia (Ballard) Horn. After graduating from Jersey Township High School, he attended Illinois College in Jacksonville where he was a member of the college band. He was active in sports throughout high school and college, lettering in football, basketball and track and setting records at Illinois College in 1931. He ran track against former President Reagan, a story he loved to tell: "In March 1931, I competed in the two-mile run at Wheaton College in Naperville. Nineteen colleges participated with 60 runners. I finished third and received a medal. Ronald Reagan finished first, and I haven't seen him since." He married the former Virginia House on Aug. 15, 1931, in Jerseyville, and they recently celebrated 75 years of marriage. His interest in sports never wavered, as he supported football, basketball (boys and girls), all his life, going to all the high school games both in and out of town. He played trumpet in Jerseyville's city band for 30 years, serving as manager for 15 years. He played taps for all the deceased war veterans at the cemetery for 40 years and received a plaque from the VFW and American Legion in 1953 for serving as bugler for military funerals. His first job was working for Froman Beach at Beach Grain Elevator from 1929 until 1932. In the late part of 1932, he established the Horn Insurance Agency in Jerseyville, with his wife, Virginia, assisting as secretary. He opened the Jersey Theater in 1938, the Lux Theater in Edwardsville in 1939 and a theater in Girard in 1940. The lifelong resident of Jerseyville supported many organizations and projects throughout his 94 years. He became a board member of Jersey State Bank on May 6, 1952, and served as chairman of the board for the past 16 years. He had been a member of the First Baptist Church in Jerseyville since 1945 and served as chairman of trustees for three years. His many memberships included charter member of Westlake Country Club; a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge for 72 years, serving as exalted ruler from 1954 to 1955; a member of the Lions Club since 1942 and serving as their president; a Mason member for 68 years; a lifelong member of the Moose Lodge and Chamber Ambassadors; and a member of the Shriners for more than 50 years, having helped many children receive treatment at Shriners Children's Hospital in St. Louis. He was appointed to the Illinois Highway Toll Road Commission in 1963 and served for six years; was a charter member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles; served as a member of the County Board of Supervisors for 12 years, receiving a plaque and a gold watch; and served as co-chairman in the building of the all-weather track for the Jerseyville School District. He and his wife were honored to be marshals of the Jersey County Fair parade in July 1996 and received a key to the city of Jerseyville. He was instrumental in establishing a new order of housing in Jersey County and was elected commissioner of the Housing Authority in January 1965, serving 28 years as chairman. On the Housing Authority board, he was instrumental in the construction of four units in Jerseyville and one in Grafton, plus the James Allen Apartments, as well as the Bert Feyerabend Building. Surviving are his wife; a daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Thomas Feyerabend Sr. of Jerseyville; two grandchildren and their spouses, Kimberly and David Phelan of Prineville, Ore., and Thomas and Barbara Feyerabend Jr. of Blue Springs, Mo.; three great-grandchildren, David Feyerabend of Kansas City, Mo., Matthew Feyerabend and his wife, Megan, of Siloam, Ark., and Nathan Feyerabend of Blue Springs; and a cousin, Grace Reynolds of Jerseyville. Visitation was from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Visitation continued from 10 a.m. until services at 11 a.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church in Jerseyville, with the Rev. Ed Haun officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville. Horn. --------------------------- (1aa) George Philip and Bertha (Steckel) Horn's daughter Mary Ann (Horn) Wittman's husband - Carl John Wittman, 87, died at 7:50 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003, at Jersey Community Hospital in Jerseyville. He was born Aug. 12, 1916, on the family farm near Beltrees in Jersey County, the son of the late Peter J. and Kunigunda (Wendle) Wittman. He married the former Mary Ann "Mayme" Horn Dec. 30, 1940, at the Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville, and they would have celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary. A U.S. Army World War II veteran, he was employed as a truck driver for more than 30 years for Mundy Lumber Company in Jerseyville, retiring in 1978. A member of the Teamsters Local 525 and the Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville, he was also the president of the final Jersey County draft board. He thoroughly enjoyed the outdoors, whether it was fishing with his sons and grandsons or putting the finishing touches on his garden that he planted for many years. He was very proud of his family and was known to keep close tabs on each and every one of them, as he made his daily car ride by each one of their homes. In addition to his wife, surviving are five daughters and sons-in-law, Becky and Lewie Miles, Helen and Ron Medford, Bonnie and Wayne Seehausen, all of Jerseyville, Hope and Randy Gibson of Olney and Minette and Bob Griffith of Godfrey; five sons and daughters-in-law, George and Margaret Wittman, Jerry and Kathy Wittman, Neal and Cindy Wittman, Vincent and Kay Wittman and Gene and Jackie Wittman, all of Jerseyville; 26 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; a sister, Catherine Gray of Godfrey; and three brothers, Leo Wittman of Jerseyville, Walter Wittman of Brighton and Norb Wittman of Alton. Preceding him in death was a grandson, William C. "Bill" Seehausen on Sept. 27, 1996; and three brothers, Raymond, Joseph and William Wittman. (Horn) Erwin's obituary - JERSEYVILLE — Florence E. "Toad" Erwin, 94, died at 7 a.m., Friday, June 17, 2016 at Jerseyville Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. She was born in Jerseyville on Dec. 15, 1921, and was one of three children born to George Phillip and Bertha (Steckel) Horn. Toad graduated from Jersey Township High School and like many of the women of that time, worked at International Shoe Factory in Jerseyville. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, who took exceptional pride in her family. The Horn family were well known gardeners, and provided many of the local residents with starter plants, and it was a tradition with Toad and her family for many years. She was a faithful member of the Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville, and attended Mass every day. She was always on the go, and never missed an opportunity to go somewhere, and was never seen without her sister, Mayme Wittman. She married Paul Charles "Popeye" Erwin on Aug. 22, 1942, in Jerseyville, and together they shared 42 years together, and were the proud parents of two children, before his death on Oct. 8, 1984. Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Bob Smith of Jerseyville; a daughter-in-law and her husband, Mary and Randy Smith of Jerseyville; seven grandchildren and their spouses, Carrie and Greg Flynn of Dow, Duff and Tammy Smith of Brighton, Jill and Roger Ward of Jerseyville, Dana Smith, and her companion, Shon Heitzig of Jerseyville, Robert Erwin, and his fiance' Kalli Baker of Alton, David and Karry Erwin of Jacksonville, Florida, and Daniel Erwin of Alton; seven great-grandchildren, Josh, Macie, Tommy, Caden, Cooper, Parker, Blake, and one due to arrive in August. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Thomas E. Erwin on March 13, 1990; a brother, Fr. His funeral mass was celebrated Thursday morning at Holy Ghost Catholic Church with Father C. R. Horn, Father William Hembrow, and Msgr P.P. Heinen as celebrants. He died at 9:15 p.m. Oct 8 at his residence. He was born May 21, 1914 in Jersey County to the late Thomas and Eugenia Smith Erwin. Erwin was in maintenance at the Peavey Mill. The family designated the United Church of Christ of Fieldon as a memorial. ---------------- (1aa) Christian and Emma Irene (Krause) Kessler's daughter Esther Pauline (Kessler) Hildred Gowin's obituary - Esther Pauline Gowin, 75, died at 6:10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 31, 2012, at her residence surrounded by her family after a valiant battle with lung cancer. She was born in Jerseyville on April 22, 1937, one of three children of the late Christian and Emma Irene (Krause) Kessler. Esther graduated from Jersey Community High School in 1955, and married Robert Hildred, and together they had four children before his death on July 26, 1968. She later married William Gowin on Jan. 1, 1971, in Jerseyville, and together they had two children and shared 18 years together before his death on Sept. 25, 1989. Esther began her working career as a young lady at the International Shoe Factory in Jerseyville, and then soon began her long career in the business world. She began working at Jersey Saving & Loan as a teller and through the years, earned her way to vice president at what later became Heritage Savings & Loan. Later she began working as a loan officer at First Federal Savings & Loan in East Alton, and then worked at Agro Systems/Tax Masters in Brighton. All the while, she was also the bookkeeper for she and Bill's business, Westside Conoco in Jerseyville, for many years. Always wanting to stay in the public sector, Esther managed the Liberty Street Boarding Home in Jerseyville, and was a desk clerk at the Reubel Hotel in Grafton. Surviving are six children and their spouses, Kay Hildred and her companion, Gabe DiFrancisco of Jerseyville, Robin Frank of Jerseyville, Clark Hildred of Jerseyville, Clayton and Dana Hildred of Decatur, Nancy and Scott Sullivan of Berea, Ky., and Russ Gowin of Decatur; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; a sister, Loretta Hagen of Granite City; a brother, Ronald Kessler of Godfrey; her beloved pets, Ms. Kitty, Lucky and Gypsy; and her grandpets, Chopper and Cilly. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a special companion, Charles Wells. Memorials may be given to BJC Hospice. ------------- (1aaa) Christian and Emma Irene (Krause) Kessler's daughter Esther Pauline (Kessler) Hildred Gowin and her 2nd husband William Gowin's son Russell William Gowin's obituary - Russell William Gowin, 43, died at 2:53 a.m. on Tuesday, June 18, 2019 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital surrounded by his family, after a long and valiant fight. He was born in Jerseyville, Illinois on Sept. 3, 1975, and was the youngest child born to the late William and Esther Pauline (Kessler) Gowin. Russ was raised in the Jerseyville and rural Kane areas, and graduated in 1993 from Jersey Community High School in Jerseyville. He attended Richland Community College in Decatur, Illinois, from 2002-2004 and graduated Phi Theta Kappa with Academic Honors, earning five certificates and two separate degrees; an Associate of Applied Science Network Administration and an Associates of Applied Science in Network Technology. He began his working career as a Technology Assistant with the South Central School District in Kinmundy, Illinois. After just one year, Russ accepted a position with the DeLand Weldon School District in DeLand, Illinois, as their Technology Director. He remained there for six years, before accepting a position with St. Louis Community College as an Operations Specialist for the IT Department. After just one year with them, Russ landed his dream job in 2014 with MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Illinois, serving as their Network and Systems Administrator until his recent illness. Russ loved animals, especially dogs and cats. He had a pet from the time he was born until the end of his time here on Earth. All of his pets lived long and happy lives due to his care, and his current kitty, Abby Scuito will now be cared for by his sister and brother in law, Nancy and Scott. He had many varied interests and passions, and all were very important parts of Russ's life. He enjoyed video games, computers and networking. He loved to stay current on the latest technology and the "most current" iPhone was a must have. He enjoyed cooking and baking, and gained many tips from the Food Network, and had scores of kitchen appliances and gadgets to expand his creations. Russ had a wide range of interests that spanned everything from sports, to SCI-FI, music, and Broadway Musicals. He was a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, and took in as many games with family and friends as possible. He also was also obsessed with WWE Wrestling, and was fortunate to have been able to attend many live events. He loved to attend Broadway Musicals as the Fox Theatre in St. Louis, and his love for Science Fiction began as a young boy with Star Trek and Star Trek: The Next Generation. His interests expanded later in life to include Harry Potter and as of late, Doctor Who. He had an eclectic taste in music that ranged from Mannheim Steamroller to Selena Gomez. Anyone who knew Russ, was aware of his love of music, and recognized his biggest obsession with Megadeth. He was founding member of the Megadeth Fan Club and attended concerts and actually met the band numerous times. White Russ possessed a wicked sense of humor, and could crack you up with the lift of an eyebrow and clever quip, those fortunate to have know Russ will attest that he was the most genuine and kind person that they had ever met. Loretta was born in Jerseyville on Sept. 1, 1935. She was the oldest of three children born to the late Christian C. and Emma Irene (Krause) Kessler. She attended Jerseyville public schools and Jerseyville was always home to her and where her relatives and friends lived. She is survived by her husband Donald W. Hagen, whom she married July 29, 1965. Two sons and their families, Phillip Hagen (Mona Sehgal) and their children, Deven and Sabina of Church Falls Va., and Richard Hagen and his son Joel of Chicago. He was born in Portage Des Sioux, Missouri, on Dec. 24, 1927, and was one of four children born to Frank H. and Ethel P (Green) Hagen. He graduated from Jersey Community High School in Jerseyville, and after serving in the U.S Army, furthered his education at Hannibal LaGrange College in Hannibal, Missouri, and then graduated from Shurtleff College in Alton Illinois. After his graduation, Donald held various jobs and business ventures and taught elementary school in the Alton School District prior to his marriage to the former Loretta Irene Kessler, also from Jerseyville. The two married on July 31, 1965 and made their home in Granite City, where Donald had gained employment with the State of Illinois as a case worker for the Illinois Department of Employment Security. Donald remained there until he retired, and after retirement he felt he wanted to continue to work and went to work for the Granite City Park District, where he remained for twelve years. Donald and Loretta were blessed with 49 years together before her death on August 2, 2014. In his later years, Donald was a familiar face and he could be frequently be seen walking all over Granite City. Surviving are his two sons and a daugher in-law, Philip Hagen and his wife Mona Seghal of Falls Church, Virginia, and Richard Hagen of Chicago; three grandchildren, Deven and Sabina of Falls Church, Virginia, and Joel, a student at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign; a sister, Mildred Kadell; and a brother and sister in-law, Ronald and Sharon Kessler of Godfrey. With her cohort, Nellie Brangenberg, they would then serve a bounteous meal for the crew. They were both wonderful in the kitchen. The Brangenberg home was an open door to family and friends. Elaine loved to feed all that came to visit or stay a few days. She loved her Bunch and Brangenberg family equally. Life got even better when her grandchildren Denise and Craig were born and later her great grandchildren, Sydney and Garrett. The Brangenberg Home was also host to many Pitch card games and a rivalry between the men and women. Along with these good Family times were also sad ones. The sudden death of Denise in an accident, her parents, Paul and Gertie, her sisters and brothers-in-law, Elzada and Vic Seidler, and Darlene and Ed Hausman. She is now joined again with her heavenly family. Denise Elaine Brangenberg, 16, daughter of Dale & Janet (Kessler) Brangenberg, of RR Jerseyville, was pronounced dead on arrival at the scene of the area's 2nd fatal accident in 2 weeks. She was killed instantly when she lost control of her father's truck, just a short distance from her home, Feb. 7. She was enroute home after leaving a friends home a short time earlier. According to the accident report the truck was traveling east on west county road in English Township when the unit apparently went out of control, veered off the north shoulder and flipped over on its top. The truck then skidded on its top for approximately 20 ft before coming to rest in the middle of the road. The vehicle was found by a passerby early the following morning. Denise was born Aug. 28, 1964 in Alton, and was a junior at Jersey Community high school. She is survived by her parents, 1 brother, Craig, at home; her maternal grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. William Kessler of Summerland Key, FL; and her paternal grandparents Mr. & Mrs. Paul Brangenberg of Kampsville. The decedent was a son of the late William C. and Dorothea Prill Krueger and was born in Jersey County on 22 November 1873. His age at the time of death was eighty-five years, eight months and fourteen days. As a young man, Mr. Krueger engaged in farming. He was married on 30 April 1896 to Miss Emma Kessler and their sixty third wedding anniversary occurred this year. Mr. Krueger was active in civic affairs and the Masonic Lodge of Fieldon. He had been a member of the Lodge for forty-seven years and served as its treasurer for twenty-nine years. He served as member of the Jersey County Board of Supervisors from 1924 to 1933, a position now held by his son, Supervisor Harold L. Krueger. The latter was elected to the post in 1945. The decedent also served as a school director for twenty years and was a member of the Directorate of Fieldon State Bank at the time it was purchased by the State Bank of Jerseyville several years ago. Surviving Mr. Krueger are his wife, Mrs. Emma Krueger, one daughter, Miss Hilda F. Krueger, and two sons, Supervisor Harold L. Krueger and Albert F. Krueger, all of Fieldon, one brother, Charles Krueger, 98 years old Jerseyville resident; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Also surviving are a daughter, Pam Blackorby of Franklin; four sons, Jim, Alan and Rick of Jerseyville and Bob of Highland; two stepchildren, Marvin Uphold of Milton and Joyce Herren of Wood River, and 17 grandchildren. A mechanic, Mr. Wahl had worked at McDonnell-Douglas for 31 years, retiring in 1980. He was a World War II Army veteran. A funeral mass was held Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Francis Xavier Church in Jerseyville with Father Henry Schmidt oficiating. Burial was in the church cemetery with the Jerseyville American Legion participating. She cared for injured wildlife for the Illinois Department of Conservation and released them back into the wild. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Pittsfield. He was a man of Baptist faith, loved to garden, fish and mushroom hunt. Most of all he loved spending time with family and friends. He married the former Virginia Hope Hoyt on April 23, 1941, in St. Charles, Mo., and together they have shared and enjoyed 69 years of marriage. She married Louis Blackorby on April 23, 1941, in St. Charles and together they were blessed with eight children and many many grandchildren during their 69 years together, and it was that large and loving family that sustained her when Louis passed away on Oct. 13, 2010. Together, they raised five daughters, Kim (Bruce) Kendall of Pawnee, IL, Debra Fitzgibbons of Alton, Penny (Marion) Gauntt of Jerseyville, Pam (Chey) Hartley of Dow, and Mitzi Fugate of Alton. Betty is also survived by six grandchildren, Jon (Heather) Stinnett, Aaron (Olivia) Kendall, Jacob (Whitney) Kendall, David (Kelsie) McCoy, Joseph Gauntt, and Liz Gauntt and Joshua Deneef-Hartley. Betty is also survived by six great-grandchildren; Caleb, Canaan and Addelyn Kendall, Annabelle Stinnett, Arianna and Hayden Manning-Gauntt. She also leaves behind beloved sisters and brothers Joyce Bland of Kampsville, Lois Charlton of Mozier, Spencer O. Long of Hamburg, Herbert Long of Milton, and Howard Long of Batchtown. In addition to being a wonderful mother, Betty was accomplished as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Garnet’s and Greenwood Manor nursing homes in Jerseyville. She also loved the sick and elderly in their homes until illness forced her to retire from the Jersey County Health Department in 1994. Betty brought smiles to the faces of all those under her care. She had the patience of a saint and has surely earned her wings. Betty loved to spend time with her family, read, work crossword puzzles, garden, and play Bingo. She was an excellent cook and was always ready to add another plate to the table. Betty was a loyal friend, proud mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. (Blackorby) Long's son Paul Willis Long's obituary - Paul Willis Long, 85, died at 2:37 a.m., Saturday, August 18, 2012 at the Willow Rose Rehab & Health Care in Jerseyville. Paul was born in Calhoun County on March 12, 1927, and was the son of the late Spencer V. & Minnie (Blackorby) Long. A graduate of Hardin High School, Paul served his country with the U.S. Navy during World War II. After his discharge, he became engaged in farming on the Helen Beach Farm and later was a self employed carpenter working until 2000 where he suffered a stroke. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Jerseyville, and was former member and deacon at the Bethany Baptist Church in Jerseyville. She was born in Hardin on Sept. 24, 1929, and was one of nine children of the late Spencer and Minnie (Blackorby) Long Sr. Bernita grew up in Calhoun County, and attended country schools in the Hamburg area. She married Joseph H. Dunham on Nov. 4, 1951, at the Fieldon United Church of Christ, and together they have shared nearly 62 years together. Bernita and Joe spent the majority of their married life in the Fieldon area, until her health necessitated a move to Jerseyville. She was a member of the Fieldon United Church of Christ and was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was the widow of John Sternes. Mrs. Sternes came to East Alton shortly before Thanksgiving to the home of a daughter, Mrs. Frank Fulkerson, while she made trips to Barnes hospital. She had been in failing health for several months before coming to East Alton. She had gone to her son's home at Fosterburg on Dec. 4 to visit for a few days before entering the hospital, and while there suffered the fall which resulted in the hip injury. She apparently was recovering from effects of the injury suffered in the fall and had planned to leave the hospital the latter part of this week. Tuesday evening while sitting up in a wheel chair she collapsed unexpectedly and died a short time later. Mrs. Sternes was born Sept. 18, 1872. at Belleview. Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Gregory Blackorby. Her husband, to whom she was married 52 years ago, died in 1929. After his death she had continued her residence at her farm home, residing with a son, Henry. She is survived by eight children. Mrs. Banker was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Blackorby and was born near Paynesville, MO on April 9, 1852, and moved to Calhoun County in 1862 where she resided until her death. She was a sister to Mary Ann Southworth, Mrs. Sarah Kitson, Mrs. Elizabeth Taylor and Grigsby and Henry Blackorby and a half-sister to Mrs. Centha Gray and Mrs. Lenda Crader all of whom have gone on before. 2 sisters, Mrs. Nancy Davis and Mrs. Martha Campbell and 1 brother, William Blackorby still survive her. On May 23, 1869, she was united in marriage to Samuel J. Merida and to this union was born 1 child, Arlettie who departed this life on April 18, 1871 at the age of 10 months. On March 19, 1905, she was united in marriage to Henry Banker, who still survives her. For many years she has been a member of the Church of Christ and was a member of the congregation at Hamburg at the time of her death. The death of Aunt Lucy, as she was familiarly known, is sadly deplored by her circle of friends. She has been a consistent Christian lady, whose loving sympathy reached far among the poor and needy, and whose tender hand was ever ready to aid those in distress. Her presence will be missed not only in the home circle where she was so beloved, but where ever she was known. Her sweet, unselfish disposition won the love of all. The glory and beauty of her home life are forever dimmed, but the memory of her many virtues will remain in the hearts of all. ------------------- Pamela (Wahl) Blackorby's husband Louis A. Blackorby's uncle Herman Hartcourt Blackorby Jr.'s obituary - Herman Hartcourt Blackorby Jr., 84, died at 5:20 a.m. Tuesday, July 8, 2008, at his residence after a period of declining health. He was born Dec. 5, 1923, in Granite City, one of 10 children born to Herman H. and Grace E. (Drulard) Blackorby, now deceased. He married the former Luella C. Carstens Aug. 26, 1946, in Jerseyville, and they would have soon celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary. She survives. As a young man he attended Jersey County schools, and entered the United States Navy in 1942, serving in World War II. He attained the rank of aviation ordinance turret, first class, and was honorably discharged in 1946. He married shortly after his discharge. In November 1946 he was hired by the city of Jerseyville as a patrolman for the police department. He was elected Jersey County sheriff in 1949, serving one term, then was elected Jersey County treasurer. He served in that capacity for three years before he was asked to serve as chief of police for the city of Jerseyville, a position he held for 23 years before retiring in 1980. He began serving as a security officer for Jersey State Bank in 1982, and in April 1983, once again served the citizens of Jerseyville, being elected as the city's mayor, serving the Jerseyville community for three terms. A very community-minded individual, he served on many clubs, committees and organizations, including the First United Methodist Church, the Fieldon Masonic Lodge, where he served as master in 1969, and the board of directors of the Piasa Council of the Boy Scouts of America. He was president of the Jerseyville Jaycees in 1956. He was a lifetime member of the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police, serving on the executive board for 10 years, a life member of the Illinois Police Association, a chairman of the Southern Illinois Police Association and advisory board member for the research center, law enforcement education at Western Illinois University in Macomb for four years. He served as chairman of the West Central Illinois Law Enforcement Commission for five years. In addition to his wife, Luella, he is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Connie Blackorby of Jerseyville and Ronald and Vicky Blackorby of Columbus, Ohio; three granddaughters, Leigh and husband, Todd, McGill of Chesterfield, Ill., Shannon Blackorby of Jerseyville and Mindy Blackorby of Columbus, Ohio; three sisters, Bernadine Mitchell of Alton, Della Shortal of Jefferson City, Mo., and Marilyn Scott of Jerseyville; and two brothers, Sloke Blackorby of Jerseyville and Louis Blackorby of Dow. Blackorby's uncle Sloke Monroe Blackorby's obituary - Sloke Monroe Blackorby, 77, died at 2:25 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 26, 2009, at Jerseyville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after several years of declining health. He was born Dec. 29, 1931, in Rosedale, the seventh of 10 children born to the late Herman and Grace (Drulard) Blackorby. He married the former Connie Heitzig on March 20, 1987, in Las Vegas, and they shared the past 21 years together. She survives. He attended Rosedale schools and entered the United States Air Force in 1951. He was stationed in Anchorage, Alaska, where he served as a crew chief on a jet fighter. After his honorable discharge in 1959, he began his long career spanning 26 years as a State Trooper with the Illinois State Police. After his retirement in 1983, Sloke went on to live life to the fullest. He enjoyed each day with his family and friends. Sloke was an avid boater, and loved to be on the water as well as play a great game of cards. He was one that never met a stranger and was a friend to all. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Stephen J. Blackorby, on Nov. 23, 1995, and five brothers, Cleo, Harold, Herman and Charles Bert Blackorby, and one in infancy. Memorials may be made to his wife to assist with mounting medical expenses. --------------------- Sloke Blackorby's 1st wife Fay Roberta (McGiffen) Blackorby's obituary - Fay Roberta Blackorby, 78, died at 6:38 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010, at Jersey Community Hospital in Jerseyville, after a short period of failing health. She was born in Alton April 21, 1931, the daughter of the late William and AnnDora (Pinkowski) McGiffen. She was raised in Dow, and was quite a culinary expert. She was a cook on numerous barge lines and worked at many of the finest hotels in Chicago, New York City and St. Louis. In her later years, she was the dining room manager at Shoney's in Alton, and most recently was a bartender and waitress at the Elks Lodge in Jerseyville. Fay was formerly married to the late Sloke Blackorby, and together they had two sons, Jeffery Lee Blackorby of Jerseyville, and the late Stephen James Blackorby, who died Nov. 23, 1995. Also surviving are three grandchildren, April Reynolds and her husband, Tyler, of Jerseyville, Stephanie Blackorby of Orlando, Fla., and Jeremy Blackorby and his companion, Christina Sprague, of Jerseyville; two great-grandchildren, Destiny and Allysa; a sister, as well as her best friend, Marie Ryan of Jerseyville; and a daughter-in-law and her husband, Duwanna and Rick Dublo of Jerseyville. In addition to her parents, husband and son, she was preceded in death by a brother, Robert McGiffen; and two sisters, Grace Davidson and Wanda Frasier. He was born in Alton, Illinois on March 14, 1956 to the late Sloke Blackorby and the late Fay (McGiffen) Blackorby. He made a living in the hospitality industry working in many venues but worked his last 20 years as a bartender for Argosy Casino. He was a fun loving guy that never met a stranger. He was famous for his pool parties, Halloween costumes and Christmas decorations. He always went all out. He was an animal lover but nothing was more important to him than his family. He is survived by a brother, Scott (Debbie) Blackorby of Jerseyville, a sister Lona Blackorby of Alton and numerous nieces and a nephew, Stephanie Blackorby, Jeremy (Shelby) Blackorby, April (Tyler) Reynolds, Nicole Smith and several great nieces Emma, Zooey, Destiny, Allysa and Samantha. Corbin, 68, died at 7:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at Alton Memorial Hospital. Born December 2, 1941 in Alton, he was the son of Albert and Evelyn (VanTrease) Corbin. He served on the USS Willard Keith with the U.S. Navy for four years. He retired from the Olin Corporation as a machinist in 2002 after 37 years of service. His hobbies included woodworking, fishing, tinkering with and fixing things, cooking and watching the Food Network. He was born April 16, 1950 in Alton, the son of James W. and Helen K. Hewitt Wahl, Sr. Jim is survived by one son, Ty (Victoria) Johnson of Jerseyville; two grandsons; his former wife, Sue Johnson Taylor; one sister; Pamela Blackorby of Franklin; three brothers, Alan (Paula) Wahl of Brighton, Rick (Lisa) Wahl of Jerseyville, and Bob (Linda) Wahl of Highland; a beloved best friend, Ann Turner of Jacksonville; along with several nieces and nephews.
