He married Dorothea Barbara Beuscher [Bucher] in Germany. He died previous to 4 June 1762 Franconia Township, Montgomery County, Pa. He is buried at Leidy Cemetery. Dorothea was born in 1700 in Prussia, died 6 Oct 1784 Franconia Township, Montgomery County, Pa. She is buried at Leidy Cemetery. Johann "John" Christopher Cope had two brothers, Johann Jost Cope II, and Jacob Andrew Cope. Notes for JOHN C. COPE are: "John Cope orphan of Yost Cope, being 12 1/2 years old, is bound to Jacob Bostain till 21 years of age to learn the Shoemaker trade Master to comply with the Law". ----------------------- Margaret Marjorie Bostian, was born about 1778, (Some information says her birthdate may have been 1771, other information says she may have been born later, about 1788). She died in 1852 in Jersey County, IL. She married Johann "John" Christopher Cope on 8 May 1804, Rowan Co., Northern Carolina. Her parents were Matthew Bostian, born about 1757, Rowan Co., North Carolina, died 3 May 1847, Alexander, North Carolina and Catherine Cope, born about 1750, Franconia Twp., Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania, died about 1844, Alexander, North Carolina. (Some information says her parents may have been Jacob and Catherine (Cope) Bostian) ------------------------------- The Copes came from N.C. John was born about 1770 in Rowan Co. NC and married on 3 May 1804. They came to Jerseyville, IL about 1828. Margaret Bostian was born about 1778 to Mathias "Matthew" Bostian who moved to NC from PA shortly thereafter. John's father was Yost Cope. Before that was Johann Nicholas Cope and Anna Catherine Gobel. The first generation was Jost Cope or Yost Cope (Kob), the father of Johann Nicholas Cope. Yost was born in Germany and came to Philadelphia in 1727 from Wurtenburg Germany on the a ship named Adventurer. He's on the ship's passenger list as Joost Coope. ------------------------------ John Cope was born 1770 in Rowan County, North Carolina and died February 25, 1852 at age 83 in Jerseyville, Jersey County, Illinois. He is buried at Hickory Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville, IL. John Cope's wife Margaret "Marjorie" Bostian was born in 1778 in Rowan County, North Carolina and died 1852 in Jerseyville, Jersey County, Illinois. John and Margaret married May 3, 1804. She is buried at Hickory Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville, IL. There is no longer a tombstone posted for John Cope and his wife Margaret, thanks to vandals. A few years ago, Jersey County put up a memorial with those names of the people buried in the vandalized cemetery. John and Margaret are both listed on this memorial. John and Marjorie Bostian Cope were early settlers in what is now Jersey County, and both were buried in the old City Cemetery. They had sixteen children, some born in Rowan County, North Carolina and some in Jersey County. ------------------------------ John and Margaret "Marjorie" (Bostian) Cope's children were-Joseph Cope, James Cope, Lewis "Lute" Cope, George Cope, Nathan Cope, Jacob Cope, Henry Cope, John Cope, Elizabeth "Betsy" Cope, Mary Margaret "Polly" Cope, Eliza "Lith" Cope, Dilly Cope, Isabella "Belle" Cope, Melinda Cope, Lucinda Cope, and another child who's name I don't know. (1) John and Margaret "Marjorie" (Bostian) Cope's son Joseph Cope was born in 1816, and died March 9, 1874. Joseph married first Martha Patsy Bullard, born March 15, 1823, and died June 28, 1862. They were married July 16, 1840. Joseph married second Melvina Warner after 1862. --------------------------- Joseph and Martha (Bullard) Cope had these children-Edman Cope, Thomas Cope, John Cope, Mary Cope, Lucinda Cope, Emeline Cope, Joseph Cope, Caroline Cope, Adeline Cope, and Lavena Cope. Joseph and Melvina "Amanda" (Warner) Cope had these children-Amanda Cope and Jacob Cope. ---------------------------- (1a) Joseph and Martha (Bullard) Cope's son Edman Cope was born in Jersey county, Ill. on the 25th day of Nov. 1846. His parents were Joseph and Martha (Bullard) Cope, his father being a native of Ohio, his mother a native of Kentucky. Joseph died on the 9th day of March 1874, Martha died on the 28th day of June 1862. Edman was raised on a farm and the first place he located was on the old Patterson farm. In 1873 he came to Richwoods township and located on section 36, where he has since resided. On the 29th of May 1876 he was married to Sarah Ward, daughter of Moses and Nancy (Eaton) Ward. He married Sarah Jane Ward May 29, 1876 in Jersey Co., IL. She was born in 1857 in Calhoun Co., IL, and died in 1894 in Jersey Co., IL. They are both buried at Fieldon Cemetery, Richwood Township, Jersey County, IL. Edman and Sarah (Ward) Cope had these children-Jerry Cope, Arwilda Cope, Grace Cope, Martha Cope, Mardie Cope, Ward Cope, Ed "Heck" Cope, and Rolin Cope. ---------------------------- (1aa) Edman and Sarah (Ward) Cope's son Jerry Cope was born in 1880 in Jersey County, IL, and died in 1973. He is buried in Fieldon Cemetery, Richwood Township, Jersey County, IL. He married Gussie Gunterman 10-7-1908 in Jersey Count, IL. Jerry Cope's wife - Gussie (Gunterman) Cope, died 08-03-1971. Final rites for Mrs. Gussie Cope, 84, of Jerseyville were held Friday, August 6, at 1:30 o'clock in the afternoon at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home where visitation hours began after 3:00 p.m. Wednesday. Her death occurred August 3 at Garnet's Chateau where she had resided for four years. Rev. W. C. Ward officiated at the services and interment was in Fieldon Cemetery. She was born October 8, 1886 at Fieldon, the daughter of Franklin and Emma Bethel Gunterman. She is survived by her husband, Jerry Cope; two sons, Virgil and Robert J. Cope of Jerseyville; three daughters, Mrs. Fred (Thelma) Leidner of Greenville, Mrs. Everett (Rosemary) Bain of Bellville and Mrs. Martin (Alberta) Golob of Alton; 15 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Herbert Gunterman of Otterville and Rodney Gunterman of Hardin; and a sister, Mrs. Rachael McKinney of Jerseyville. Her parents, one son and one daughter preceded her in death. ------------------------------- (1aaa) Jerry and Gussie (Gunterman) Cope's son - Robert J. Cope, died ??-09-1985. Robert J. Cope, 66, died at 10 a.m. Monday at his residence. He was born in Fieldon, son of the late Jerry and Gussie (Gunterman) Cope. The World War II veteran was a business agent for Jerseyville Local 646. Survivors include two grandchildren; and three sisters, Alberta Golob of Godfrey, Rosemary Bain of Bellville and Thelma Leidner of Greenville. Visitation was from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services were conducted at 11 a.m Thursday with the Rev. James Pepper officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville. --------------------------------- (2aaa) Jerry and Gussie (Gunterman) Cope's son - Virgil Cope, died 01-31-1981. Services for Virgil Cope, 70, of 910 W. Exchange, Jerseyville were conducted at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Jacoby Bros. Funeral Home with the Rev. Grady Baskin officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery. He died at 12:40 p.m. Jan. 31 at his residence. He was born in Fieldon July 25, 1911, a son of the late Jerry and Gussie Gunterman Cope and was retired as a laborer out of Local 646 after 42 years service. He is survived by one brother, Robert J. Cope of Jerseyville; three sisters, Alberta Golob of Godfrey; Rosemary Bain of Belleville and Thelma Leidner of Mulberry Grove. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Jacoby Funeral Home. The Heart Fund has been named as a memorial. ---------------------------------- (3aaa) Jerry and Gussie (Gunterman) Cope's daughter - Alberta (Cope) Golob, 80, died at 5:25 p.m. Thursday, March 3, 2005, at Greenwood Manor in Jerseyville. She was born May 16, 1924, in Fieldon, Ill., to Jerry and Gussie (Gunterman) Cope. She married Martin Golob on Feb. 26, 1970, in Alton. He died Aug. 28, 1994. She worked in the X-ray department at Jersey Community Hospital for many years. She is survived by two sons and their wives, Ernest and Brenda McDonald of Symsonia, Ky., and Robert and Barbara McDonald of Jerseyville; a stepdaughter, Peggy Hunter of Albuquerque, N.M.; four grandchildren, Robert and Kevin McDonald, Tammy Lehr and Kelly Jo McDonald Hillis; six great-grandchildren, Sean, Ryan and Megan McDonald and Brittney, Brett and Brianna Lehr; and a sister-in-law, Betty Goldasich of Granite City. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Russell, Virgil and Robert Cope; and three sisters, Rosemary Bain, Thelma Leider and Faye Woolsey. Born Aug. 20, 1943, in Jerseyville, she was one of three children of Elmer O. and Minnie (Daringer) Looper. She graduated in 1961 from Jersey Community High School and later obtained her certification to become a certified nurse's aide. She enjoyed her profession and the people she cared for in their homes. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Kelly and James Hillis of Panama City Beach, Fla.; a son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Sarah McDonald of Jerseyville; and a brother and sister-in-law, Elmer Leroy and Mary Ann Looper of Bunker Hill. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Sharon Looper. McDonald's obituary - Robert J. McDonald, 73, died Wednesday, June 27, 2018 at the Hillsboro Rehabilitation & Health Care Center in Hillsboro, Illinois. He was born in Wood River, Illinois, on July 18, 1944, one of two sons born to Ernest Raymond and Alberta R. (Cope) McDonald Sr. As a young man, he enlisted with the United States Navy, serving during the Vietnam War, was honorably discharged as an Electrician's Mate Third Class. After returning home, he began working at Laclede Steel for a short time, and then began working on the river with American Commercial Barge Lines, repairing barges until 1973. At that time, he began his time as a Union Laborer with Local 218, Alton, Illinois. He remained a loyal and dedicated employee for 49 years, retiring in 1998. During his time with the union, he had served as both a steward and general foreman, and spent a great deal of time on the Alton Lock & Dam. In his younger years, he enjoyed spending time fishing and hunting, and later in life became a car enthusiast. Anyone that knew him, can recall the meticulous care in which he took in their maintenance and appearance. He married the former Barbara Schaaf on Oct 2, 1965 at the State Street Baptist Church in Jerseyville; and together they have built a life that has spanned 52 years, experienced the joys of their two children, and now grandchildren. Surviving are his wife, Barbara McDonald of Jerseyville; a son and daughter in-law, Bobby and Dawn McDonald of Jerseyville; a daughter and son in-law, Tammy and Kris Lehr of Eldred; six grandchildren, Sean McDonald, and his companion, Lindsey Schmidt, Ryan McDonald, Megan McDonald, Brittney Lehr, Brett Lehr and Breanna Lehr; and a great- granddaughter, Makalyn Rae McDonald. She died July l6, 1967 at Normandy Osteopathic hospital, St. Louis County, Missouri. She married Stephen H. Woolsey and Eva J. (Hutchens) Woolsey's son Lester W. Woolsey. He was born in Jersey County, Illinois. He died February 22, 1989 at Jersey Community hospital in Jerseyville, Jersey County, Illinois at age 76. They are both buried at Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville, Jersey County, Illinois. Lester W. Woolsey's and his 1st wife Fay (Cope) Woolsey had 4 children-2 sons, Rodney W. Woolsey, and Arbie D. Woolsey; and 2 daughters, Eva Sharol (Woolsey) Backues, and Sandra K. (Woolsey) Stanley. After his 1st wife's death Lester W. Woolsey married 2nd Edith Dwyer, September 21, 1969, in Jersey County, Illinois. This where My Mother was born. The family lived in a tent as the bottoms was still being cleared of trees and Grampa worked in the timber for a living. It was a very hard life and Mother was 12 years old before they moved to a Log Cabin as we would say "Up along the bluff. Her first years of School was at "McKinley School located at the leavy where she lived. After the family moved she attended the "Redish" schol which was five miles away. By that time Aunt Mary & Aunt Bertie was born. The names of her brothers and sister Uncle Russell, Uncle Virgil, My Mother Faye, Aunt Thelma , Uncle Bob Aunt Mary and Aunt Bertie. The family survived off of Black Birds, Possums, cooons, wild rabbitts, squirrils turtles and fish from the creeks and River. Canned all of the vegestables they could raise from a garden and hunt wild black berries and Paw Paw"s ..Raised a hog when they got a chance. Nutwood was the nearest town. Jerseyville was over 17 miles from Nutwood. Mother earned some money and she and Aunt Mary walked all the way to Jerseyville to get a pair of shoes, but wouldn"t put them on because they would get dirty on their way home. She went to work at the Jerseyville Shoe Factory and Met My Dad and they was married in 1935. They had four Children Rodney Walter, Arbie Dale, Eva Sharol and Sandra Kay. My Sister Sandra put a real nice picture of Mother and the girls. Mother became a very Devout Christian after she was married. A small Home mission Church that was from "Old Methodist Doctrine it where She found the Lord. Fay Woolsey, 53 years, 8 months, 23 days, died July l6, at Normandy Osteopathic hospital, St. Louis County, where she had been a patient for 4 days. She was a daughter of Jerry & Gussie (Gunterman) Cope, Jerseyville and was born in Jersey County, October 23, 1913. Lester W Woolsey, 76, died February 22 at Jersey Community hospital. He was a self-employed barber for 30 years retiring in 1972. He was born in Jersey County, son of the late Steven & Eva (Hutchens) Woolsey. He married Edith (Dwyer) Woolsey, September 21, 1969, in Jersey County, and she survives. Also surviving are 2 sons, Rodney W Woolsey, Jerseyville and Arbie D Woolsey, Yucaipa, CA; 2 daughters, Eva Sharol Backeus and Sandra K Stanley, both of Bellville; 2 stepsons, Harold Tucker, Ft Madison, WI, and Clifford A Tucker, Jerseyville; 2 stepdau, Phyllis Frazier, Jerseyville; 16 grandchildren; 11 step grandchildren; and many g-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 1 stepson, Reginald D Tucker, 4 sisters and 3 brothers. Visitation was at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Woolsey's and his 1st wife Fay (Cope) Woolsey's daughter Eva Sharol (Woolsey) Backeus's husband Norman Dean Backues's obituary - Norman Dean Backues, 80, of Dallas, Texas born July 1, 1935, in Belle, Mo., passed away Tuesday, May 3, 2016, at Baylor Scott and White Hospital in Carrollton, Texas. Norm graduated in 1953 from Belle High School. He attended the University of Missouri-Columbia, and was a graduate of The Graduate School of Banking in Madison, Wisconsin class of 1967. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1957 and spent much of his time in Beiruit, Lebanon. He was awarded the Soldier's Medal prior to his honorable discharge in July 1959. Norm was preceded in death by his parents, Rainey Lee and Sopha, nee Shanks, Backues; a sister, Edith Scronce of O'Fallon, Mo.; and a nephew, Terry Lee Scronce. Norm is survived by his beloved wife, Eva Sharol, nee Woolsey, Backues, with whom he celebrated 56 years of marriage on Oct. 23, 2015. Norm and Eva Sharol spent many wonderful years raising their family in Belleville, Ill., and later enjoyed their retirement years in Dallas, Texas. He leaves behind his dear brother, Jared "Jerry" Backues of St. Louis, Mo.; a brother-in-law, Earl Scronce of O'Fallon, Mo.; numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews, and his dearest lifelong friends. Norm's lifelong involvement in banking can be attributed to his parents who started a bank in Belle, Mo. Norm began his banking career in 1959 with the Mercantile Commerce National Bank in Midtown, St. Louis, Mo. In 1962 he joined the Edgemont Bank and Trust in East St. Louis, Ill., as assistant cashier in charge of bank operations. He advanced rapidly and was soon promoted to cashier and named a director of the bank. He was later named president of BancServices, Inc. which was the auditing division serving the 5 MidAmerica Banks. In 1971, Norm assisted in the formation of the Metropolitan Bank in Alton and was named president and member of the board of the newly formed bank. Norm also negotiated the purchase and eventual merger of the Carbondale National Bank into what was later to be known as the MidAmerica Banking group. In 1984 Norm's vision of seeing a desperate need for quality bank auditing for community banks prompted him to form his own bank auditing company, Norman Backues and Associates, Inc. (NBA, INC.). That firm quickly gained state wide recognition for providing outstanding bank audits and consulting services. In 2000, when Norm retired as the founder and president of NBA, Inc. the company had served approximately 130 community banks, ranging in asset size from $2.9 million to $7 billion by providing internal audits, compliance audits, and management services. The company's client base was located in Illinois and six other states plus Washington, D.C. Anyone acquainted with Norm knew of his tireless devotion to his wife, his family, and to his community. As chairman of the 1977-78 United Way Campaign of Greater St. Clair County, Norm spearheaded a drive that raised a record $635,000. In addition to the United Way, he served his community as a member of The West End Rotary Club, Belleville, Ill. He also served as president of the Wolf Branch school board, and as president of the Bi-County YMCA where he also served as fund raising chairman for two years. Even into his retirement years, Norm enjoyed staying active. For years he was an avid racquetball player, and besides daily jogging and walking, his favorite past time was cycling. Norm was also an avid water skier and loved boating with his family and friends. He will be also be remembered for his unmatched devotion to the baseball Cardinals. In the last two years, Norm fought bravely against dementia, a disease that would take him from those who loved him dearly. Alvis Leonard Cope, 71 year old Grafton resident, died Thursday evening, August 3, at 6 o'clock at the Waters Nursing Home in Jerseyville where he had resided the past thirteen months. Rev. William Sipes conducted the final rites for Mr. Cope at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home Monday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock. Burial was in Valhalla Memorial Park. Visitation hours were hld at the Funeral Home. Mr. Cope was a son of the late Daniel and Mary Monk Cope and was born at Fieldon on October 31, 1895. A resident of Grafton for sixty years, Mr. Cope was a retired burner at Duncan Foundry in Alton. He was a veteran of World War I and a member of Jersey County Barracks 1395. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force for four years. He was a police officer with the city of Alton from 1956 until 1964. He retired from Brinks Armor Car in 1990 after 26 years of dedicated service. Born March 21, 1926 in Alton, he was the son of James W. and Nora B. (Green) Cope. A U.S. Marine Corps veteran, he was employed in the Safety/Fire Department for the Olin Corporation before retiring. Chuck was a dedicated public servant in East Alton. He served under eight Mayors on the Village Board as a Trustee; was a police officer and longtime fireman, mentoring those who served with him, as well as Chairman of the Building and Zoning Board of Appeals for the Village. He was a member of the American Legion Post 794, always giving back to his community. He married Esther Rhyne on Aug. 15, 1947 in East Alton. She died Feb. 26, 2018. Formerly of the rural Grafton area, he and his wife moved to Jerseyville in the last year after moving from their farm they operated south of Otterville for many years, and was a selfemployed auctioneer graduating from the Reisch Auctioneering School in Mason City Iowa. He was the first Democratic Otter Creek Township supervisor, and was a member of the Jersey County Board for a few years before becoming chairman for 22 years from 1961 to 1982. Clyde married the former Bettylou Cone July 23, 1950 at the First Baptist Church in Jerseyville. She survives. Also surviving are a son, Bradley and Joan Cope of Jerseyville, a daughter and son-in-law Vivian and Jeff Prough of Euless Texas; six grandchildren, Heather, Aaron, and Michael Cope, Laura, Jennifer, Alan and Karlie Cope; sister Gladys Drainer of Grafton and one brother Paul Cope of Alton. She was born in Jerseyville on Feb. 26, 1929, the only child of George & Edith Mae (Allen) Cone. Bettylou graduated in 1947 from Jersey Township High School, and went on to attend Illinois State University. In her younger years, she worked for Inman Department Store in downtown Jerseyville, and in her later years at Wal-Mart. She was a faithful and loyal member of both the First Baptist Church of Jerseyville and the Order of the Eastern Star for over 50 years. She married Clyde W. Cope on July 23, 1950 in Jerseyville, and they shared 48 years together before his death on Aug. 21, 1998. Clyde and Bettylou were the parents of two children, both of whom survive, Brad Cope and his wife Joan of Jerseyville and Vivian Prough and her husband, Jeff of DeKalb, Tx.; three grandchildren & their spouses, Heather and Justin Brown of Bedford, Tx., Aaron and Christi Prough and Michael Prough all of Euless, Tx.; three great grandchildren, Danielle Prough, Kennadee Brown and Seth Brown; along with Brad and Joan's children and grandchildren. She was born Sept. 17, 1928, in Otterville, the last surviving of six children born to Lester and Blanche (Price) Cope. She married Marvin G. Drainer on Jan. 20, 1945, at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fieldon, and during their 57 years of marriage they raised seven children, and together as a family operated their family farm near Otterville for many years. Marvin passed away on Feb. 21, 2002. Gladys had a passion for Otterville and was instrumental in the formation of the Otter Creek Historical Society, which was formed in December of 1998, and secured the Hamilton Primary School on the National Register in August of 1998. She served in many capacities throughout her life, presently serving as president of the Otter Creek Historical Society, served as an Jersey County Election Judge, served as a trustee for Otter Creek Township, and was currently serving on the Otter Creek Township Cemetery Board of Trustees on top of being a huge St. Louis Cardinals fan. For 28 years, Gladys has served on the Hamilton Primary School Festival Board, ensuring that the school does not get forgotten, and serving as a reason for past and present members of the Otterville community to gather and reminisce. Mrs. Patton had been suffering from high blood pressure for some time. Sunday afternoon she expressed a desire for a bottle of soda and her son, Gilbert, had left the home to get the refreshment for his mother. During his absence Mrs. Patton called to a neighbor to have her daughter, Mrs. Lowell Skeens, to come to the Patton home. When Mrs. Skeens arrived she found her mother unconscious in a chair. A physician was summoned but death occurred within a short time. Mrs. Patton was born on a farm near Jerseyville, nov. 22, 1889. She had resided at Grafton most of her life. Surviving Mrs. Patton in addition to her husband and daughter, Mrs. Skeens, are two sons, William Russell and Calvin Gilbert Patton of Grafton; one Brother Clinton Cope of Jerseyville and three sisters, Mrs. Harry Maxwell of St. Paul, Minn., Mrs. Edith White of Jerseyville and Mrs. Clifford Fuller of East Alton. Burial: Scenic Hill Cemetery, Grafton, Jersey County, Illinois. The son of John Albert Cope and Lillie "Jeanette" Dowdall, Clinton served in the United States Army during World War I. He was a private first class by the time he received his discharge. After the war, he married Mary "Irene" Foval (1902-1978) on 12 Jul 1921. They were the parents of 2 children-Loren Russell Cope (1922-1989) and Dorothy Mae Cope Legate Bell (1923-1993). Clinton held a variety of jobs over the years and was extremely involved in a number of civic, social and religious organizations. He was a rural mail carrier for the Jerseyville Post Office. He worked there until his retirement after 36 years. He also worked as a teacher. Clinton was the Quarry Township auditor and helped organize the Grafton Volunteer Emergency Corps. Leon Mashburn. The two married on Aug. 4, 1937, in St. Charles, Missouri, and their marriage was blessed with two children and 46 years together before his death on Nov. 6, 1983. She was devout in her Catholic faith, and was steadfast in her love for family. Her mother died when Juliana was just 14 years of age, and she was lovingly cared for by her aunt and uncles. Her giving and loving nature was present as she cared for her father in his elderly years, and later for her husband after his devastating car accident. Juliana also possessed a love of life, and had the uncanny ability to adjust and adapt to any situation. She was young at heart and jumped at every opportunity to try a new adventure and see the world.
