This is a quick and easy quest to get a decent shield, and gain a strong warrior for your party. You can learn about the Knighthood of Monitor from any of the knights; they're found in the eastern entrance, the southcentral tower, and the southwestern tower. In the southwestern tower is the leader of the knights, Lord Elmerson. After asking to join the knighthood, he sends you on a quest to Dawn for a wolf pelt.

Follow the road northwest of Monitor, and you will reach Dawn in the middle of the dark woods. Ask the tavern keeper, and she tells you the wolf is south of her tavern. Leave the tavern, go west towards the archmage, and walk south through the alley separating the two buildings. Keep going south until you enter the thick woods surrounding the town, and you find a wolf. Kill it, search the area, take the wolf pelt, and return to Lord Elmerson in Monitor for your shield.

You can now visit Marsten in the southcentral tower, and he will ask to join your party. He has ambitions of becoming the next Knight of the Leopard, and feels he needs more worldly experience if he is to take that role someday.

And in fact, he gets his wish. In Ultima 7, Part 2: Serpent's Isle, Lord Marsten is the new Knight of the Leopard in Monitor.
