A Brief Summary

This is the second book in the Vampire Diaries. We meet in more detail the characters of Caroline Forbes and Tyler Smallwood. These two are the presumed "bad guys" of the tale. They steal Elena's diary, which has incrimidating evidence against Stefan, who is having a tough time in Fell's Church. They are blameing him for the murders that keep happening. Also, Aleric Saltzman is introduced, he's the substitue teacher who has a secret, what is it, you'll have to read to find out. Anyway, the Damon-Stefan conflict comes to a head in this one too. Matt and Stefan become even better friends in this book, which is hard for Matt, because he still loves Elena. But he's a good guy as we later will see.

Comments

Personally, I loved this Vampire Diary the best. So much happens in it. I think that there is a better sense of the characters, so you feel more "there" when you are reading it. And the romance...WOO...not even a hint of sex, of course...but the kisses are cute! My only problem in this one is the whole diary affair. It seemed like Elena and Stefan had no communication skills. I mean, her diary gets stolen, her boyfriend has magick powers. Who is the first person you would tell??? I mean for crying out loud, it was a diary, not the end of the freaking world. but nooooo, she couldn't mention it to him, might get him upset. We see what happens when we keep secrets like that, now don't we!

Favorite Scenes

I have so many of them in this book, I can't even count 'em! But I'll try! Okay, the first and best part occurs in the very begining...When Elena and Damon meet for the first time with Elena knowing who and what he is. (pgs 1-9) Man, the whole chapter was great. The next was when Stefan was in Elena's living room with her Aunt Judith, but all he could focus on was Elena. (83-84) Third was the second confrontation between Elena and Damon, and then Stefan too. (92-97) Fourth was when Stefan asks to borrow Matt's junkie car (125-227) Fifth is Elena's dream with Damon. (130-135) okay, and to speed it up my sixth, but certainly not last, favorite scene is of course, the engagement scene. Stefan gets enough courage to propose to Elena...good stuff! (219-229)

Favorite Quotes

Damon: "Don't push me Elena."
Elena: "I think, that maybe you need to be pushed" (p248)

Elena: "I'd rather cut my throat."
Damon: "An intriguing thought. But I can do it so much more enjoyably." (p182)

Group: "Take it off! Take it off!" (p118)

Final Notes

As with all the Vampire Diaries, The Struggle is currently out of print. You can; however, find them in used book stores or on the WWW bookstores. I have also heard a rumor that they will be back in print in '99...but that is just a rumor. If you can get a hold of a copy, maybe through your local library, or a friend...I highly suggest you read it...espically for you Die-Hard LJers!
