Although we had a pretty big taste of Ash Redfern in Secret Vampire, we finally get to see him in a more personal light in Daughters of Darkness. We also get to meet his three sisters and his soulmate, Mary-Lynnette. She’s a very strong, motherly female role. She does everything for herself and watches over her litle, yet bigger (I hate it when that happens), brother. Mary-Lynnette’s biggest hobby is astronomy. Well, when the three runaway Redfern sisters move in next door to her…things just basically snow-ball from there. Ash, being a “good son” and brother goes to Briar Creek, Oregon (where M.L. and the sisters are) to drag them back home to a life of slavery. It’s there that him bumps into Mary-Lynnette and falls madly in love with her. Problem is, during their blood exchange, Mary-Lynnette sees all of the bad things that Ash has done over the years to humans. She makes him give her a year to decide…and rightly so!

Well, in the grand tradition of the Night World and its reputation with slowness…it’s been three years and we’re still waiting. I’d have to say that of all the Night World books, this is probably everyone’s favorite. But we shall see after you vote on my poll on the (link) main page. People write the most fan-fics about this book. We just love Ash; he’s great. I have a feeling that Ash is Ms. Smith’s favorite character too. He’s in four Night Worlds, that’s more than any other character!

Now, I’ve greatly over simplified this plot. There is much more action and intrigue here. Mary-Lynnette’s brother and Jade, Ash’s younger sister believe they are soulmates…I’ll discuss this in my Final Notes though. We get a little old-fashioned violence too! Good stuff. I Definitely recommend it.

Favorite Scenes

I have so many favorite scenes in this book…I can’t possibly record them all…but I’ll sure try!

The first…and arguably best part was of course when Ash and “M.L.” meet for the first time in her living room. She kicks him and the sparks fly. I just cracked up so hard and felt so much excitement. There was so much attraction and energy between them that it just hurt to touch! (63-73). Okay, can I just say again how awesome this scene is. The best soulmate meeting BY FAR!

I also liked the part where Mark and Mary-Lynnette and Rowan, Kestrel, and Jade all become family through the blood exchange. See, vampires and humans can get along!(99-121)

I also just love the part where Ash falls through the hole on the front porch. Cracks me up every time I read it. I actually laughed out loud. I mean, in Secret Vampire we see this Ash that’s so cool and suave…so much like Damon. But in this one he’s almost one big dork. It would be like if Ms. Smith wrote a 5th Vampire Diary…all about Damon…and in it he, like…tripped on the sidewalk or something like that! (181-182)

My final favorite scene is when Ash and Mary-Lynette kiss for the first time. I have so many more favorites…but I’m only going to put the best ones. So anyway…in this scene…Ash declares his love…and Mary-Lynette has her first kiss. Very sweet. (185-195).

Favorite Quotes

“Who are you?”-Mary-Lynette
“Who are you -Ash. (69)

Okay this is not a quote said by the characters, it’s just a line. But I liked it so much because it showed raw emotion and desire. “Mary-Lynette had an inexplicable impulse to knock Ash flat and fall down on top of him.”…it’s so cute how it’s “inexplicable” (72).

“What do they call you, anyway? Mary? Marylin? M’lin? M.L.?” –Ash (73)

“Ash, get bent and die.”-Mary-Lynette. What does this mean exactly? Does any body know? (90)

Reoccurring Characters

The only character that we meet in Daughters of Darkness that return in other books is Ash of course...and Quinn. He's the star of The Chosen...book number 5.

Final Notes

This was definitely the best Night World by far. I laughed, I got excited at the good parts, and I almost cried at the end. Which brings me to Daughters of Darkness only flaw…the ending. It left so much unfinished business, as they say. I remember that I threw the book down I was so mad. But, even still, it remains a great L.J. work of art. You know what I thought was weird though…Ms. Smith never gives a real description of Mary-Lynette…except that she has dark hair and blue eyes (I think). I wonder what that’s all about? I know there is a reason for it. Also, there is a whole question of whether Mark and Jade are true soulmates. After rereading the text just now, I’m going to have to lean towards “yes”…which may surprise you. I used to think definitely “no”. I mean, there were no sparks and all. But I think Mark said it best “It’s like—I don’t know how to describe it, but it’s like I belong with Jade. She really sees me. I mean, not the outside stuff. She sees me inside, and she likes me.” (122). Now, isn’t this what being soulmates is all about? Isn’t that the true meaning of soulmates. So I’m giving a definite “yes” for Jade and Mark.
