The Bridgeport Bridge

SR 17 Across the Columbia River at Bridgeport

The roadway from Brewster to the Coulee City area was added to the state highway system in 1931 as the Brewster-Coulee City branch of State Road No. 10, later Primary State Highway (PSH) 10. At first this route crossed the Columbia River on a bridge at Brewster. Circa 1950 the highway bridge at Bridgeport was opened to traffic. PSH 10 BC was shifted to the Bridgeport Bridge. The highway from Brewster via the Brewster Bridge to Bridgeport became the Brewster- Bridgeport branch of PSH 10. In 1964, PSH 10 BC was renumbered SR 17. PSH 10 BB became SR 173.

Chief Joseph Dam, a short distance upstream from Bridgeport, was under construction at the time the Bridgeport Bridge was built. The photo was taken in September 2001 from Bridgeport. Chief Joseph Dam is just outside of the photo to the right.
