The Brewster Bridge

SR 173 Across the Columbia River at Brewster

The original Brewster Bridge was built in the 1920s and was added to the state highway system in 1931. The bridge was a through steel truss with a short span in the center and longer spans to either side. While undergoing a renovation in the late 1960s, the bridge caught fire. Evidently a welder's spark set the wooden portion of the bridge deck ablaze. The main bridge spans collapsed into the river.

A replacement bridge was soon built. The new bridge piers appear to be widened versions of the old. This bridge also has a short span in the middle of the river flanked by longer spans.

The photo was taken in September 2001 from the southwest side of the bridge.
