SSH 5M was transferred to SSH 2M in 1959. This route began at Jct PSH 2 Auburn-North Bend Branch (now SR 18) on the west side of Auburn and headed northerly via the west side of Kent and Tukwila to Jct PSH 1 (US 99). When the state highway system was renumbered, SSH 2A became SR 181.
