SSH 15A was added to the state highway system in 1937. This route began at Jct PSH 15 (now US 2) at Cavaleros Corner and headed northeasterly via Lake Stevens to Jct SSH 1A, continuing northeasterly to Granite Falls. Most of SSH 15A and SSH 1A shared the same roadway from Lake Stevens to Granite Falls.
In the late 1950s and early 1960s, SSH 1A was shifted to a more direct alignment from Snohomish to Arlington, reducing the amount of overlap between SH 1A and SSH 15A. The description of SSH 15A in state law was revised in 1963 to reflect this change.
When the current state highway numbering system was first posted in January 1964, SSH 15A from US 2 to SR 9 became SR 204. SSH 1A became SR 9. SSH 15A from SR 9 to Granite Falls became SR 92.
