EMBERS OF THE DAY
I waited with eucalyptus
through the oncoming dark
as slope by slope
was lit
and extinguished
by what was left of the dayA sky no longer fierce:
red and topaz turning to blue ash
whole hillsides of redwood and laurel oak
faded and folded down
a massive chorus section by section
settling into silenceOnly eucalyptus' papery bark and flat leaves
still craved the remainder:
light and wind
when everything around
had given over
to night and stillnessOne by one each abiding tree
set apart and blown upon
glowed
loomed out of the bellowed dark
  whispering and amber
leaned its slender length toward me and walkedc h r i s t i n a h u t c h i n s
