Taylor Surname

This branch of the Taylor family is supposed to be Scottish in origin. Some theories indicate that the name Taylor may derive from the family's ancestor: Baron Taillefer who was killed at the Battle of Hastings in 1066.


1st Generation:

William Taylor was born circa 1612 in Scotland. He died circa December 30, 1677 in Wells, York Co., Maine.

He is supposed to have come to America from Glasgow, Scotland. He came to the English colonies by the 1640's, where he settled in Exeter, New Hampshire. He married Ann Wyeth Dare in 1647 or 1648 in Exeter. They had at least 5 children: Joseph, William, Edward, Benjamin (see next generation), and Sarah. In about 1665, William moved with his family to Wells, Maine, where he settled. William died after December 30, 1677 in Wells, Maine. His widow Ann later married George Pearson and died after 1714.
William married Anne Wyeth after April 25, 1647 in Exeter, Rockingham Co., New Hampshire. She was born circa 1630 in England. She died after 1714 in Wells, York Co., Maine.

2nd Generation:

Benjamin Taylor was born circa 1665 in Exeter, Rockingham Co., New Hampshire. He died on January 30, 1746/7 in Stratham, Rockingham Co., New Hampshire.

As a youth, Benjamin moved to the town of Stratham, New Hampshire. He was married there in about 1693 to Rachel Lawrence. They had at least three children: Nathan (see next generation), Benjamin, and Edward. In 1726, Benjamin served as a selectman for the town of Stratham. He died there on January 30, 1746/7. His widow Rachel died in 1749.

Nathan was raised in Stratham, where he married Anna Chase. In about 1773, Nathan moved to the new town of Sanbornton in Strafford (now Belknap) County, New Hampshire. Nathan died there on March 11, 1784.
Nathan married Anna Chase in Stratham, Rockingham Co., New Hampshire. She was born on April 27, 1706 in Newbury, Essex Co., Massachusetts 4,5. She died in March 1739/40 in Stratham, Rockingham Co., New Hampshire 1.

4th Generation:

Jonathan Taylor was born on October 2, 1739 in Stratham, Rockingham Co., New Hampshire 1. He died on March 2, 1816 in Sanbornton, Strafford (now Belknap) Co., New Hampshire 1. He is buried in the First Baptist Church Cemetery, Sanbornton, Belknap Co., New Hampshire.

He was married in Stratham on October 16, 1760 to Rachel Moore. Rachel and Jonathan were fourth cousins, both being descended from the Chase family. Jonathan continued living in Stratham until about 1773, when he moved with his family to the newer and more remote location of Sanbornton in Strafford (now Belknap) County, New Hampshire.

Jonathan was one of the original settlers of the town of Sanbornton and did much for its improvement. He kept one of the first taverns in that town. During the American Revolution, he probably would have served, but remained at home to care for his family and his aging father. Jonathan and Rachel had 8 children: John, Jonathan (see next generation), Ede, Anna, Mark, Rachel, Thomas, and Nicholas. Jonathan lived out his life at Sanbornton, New Hampshire, where he died on March 2, 1816 at the age of 76. His wife Rachel died in 1808. They are both buried at the Chapel Cemetery in Sanbornton, New Hampshire.

Jonathan Taylor Jr. was born on March 12, 1764 in Stratham, Rockingham Co., New Hampshire 1. He died on August 11, 1841 in Sanbornton, Belknap Co., New Hampshire 1. He is buried in the First Baptist Church Cemetery, Sanbornton, Belknap Co., New Hampshire.

When a young boy, Jonathan moved with his family to Sanbornton, New Hampshire, where he lived for the rest of his life. While living in Sanbornton, Jonathan also served in the latter part of the American Revolution, put under what capacity it is unknown. After the war was over, on March 16, 1786 in Sanbornton, Jonathan was united in marriage with Theodosia Gale. He first settled on a farm in the northeast part of Sanbornton, then in about 1801-1802 he moved his family to a different part of Sanbornton, where they remained.

Jonathan and Theodosia had 9 children: Anna, Martha, Sally (see next generation), Susannah, David, Daniel, Margaret, Betsey, and Jonathan. Jonathan also served in the War of 1812, as a Corporal in a company of volunteers of old men. In matters of religion, Jonathan may have been the first of the family to become a Baptist. He was one of the original members of the First Baptist Church in Sanbornton, and he is said to have regularly attended the religious meetings of the church even though he lived quite a long distance away. According to one source, “in character he was unexceptionable, and highly esteemed by all who knew him.” Jonathan died on August 11, 1841 at the age of 77 and his wife Theodosia died in 1849. Both were buried in the First Baptist Church Cemetery in Sanbornton.

Sarah "Sally" Taylor was born on July 18, 1791 in Sanbornton, Strafford (now Belknap) Co., New Hampshire 1. She died on May 8, 1858 in Sanbornton, Belknap Co., New Hampshire 1,2,3. She is buried in the First Baptist Church Cemetery, Sanbornton, Belknap Co., New Hampshire.

Her name was Sarah, but she always went by Sally, except on legal documents. Sally was a Baptist and remained a faithful member of the First Baptist Church for her whole life. She was married at her parents' home in Sanbornton by the Rev. Crocket to John Wadleigh on March 4, 1814. Afterwards they lived at an unknown location in Sanbornton. Then in 1819 they settled on the Wadleigh homestead in Sanbornton, where they remained until their deaths. Sally . Sally died at her home on May 8, 1858 at the age of 66. She was afterwards buried in the First Baptist Church Cemetery beside her husband John who died in 1850.
Sally married John Wadleigh on March 3, 1814 in Sanbornton, Strafford (now Belknap) Co., New Hampshire 1,3.
