Monroe, Wash. ( June 24, 2001) - Gatorade Night at the Races, was witness to
Lex Johnson in the #22 (a Monroe resident) taking his first win of the 2001
season. Lex Johnson was season champion for the NASCAR Street Stock Bombers in
the 2000 season, and was the Great West Region champion, as well. Way to go Lex!!!
Nice to see you in winner’s circle.
The field was light tonight with only 12-13 cars in the lineup. Tom Moriarty
(#5) set fast time, and spun a 4-car invert. Moriarity also took the trophy
dash. Supers were back on the 3/8 mile oval after being on the 5/8 last week.
The main event went all 40 laps, as was a very clean face, overall.
John Zaretzke flew in from Portland where he had qualified 2nd and ran the
Raybestos Brakes Northwest Tour race. Unfortunately, after only 6 or so laps,
Zaretzke had car problems and was out early. But on the ‘up’ side, this
allowed him to get to Evergreen in plenty of time to start the main. He had
Moriarty scuff his tires earlier in the day, and was gracious enough to pay for
all of Tom's entry into the track as a way of saying thanks. Great
sportsmanship!
The 4-car invert put Matt Murphy (#00) on the pole with Lex Johnson (#22) on the
outside. Murphy led a good portion of the first half, but it appeared that his
tires might have gone away. Moriarty was running strong, but as Murphy lost the
lead, Lex Johnson pulled in and took over. Moriarity was running not letting up
and rode right on his rear bumper the whole way. The race was very clean, a few
spins, and only a couple of quick cautions. At about lap 30, Moriarty pulled off
the track coming out of turn 4 (appeared to have engine or ignition problems),
and Lex Johnson managed to hold off the field for the win for the remaining 10
laps and take the checkered. Very impressive win for the rookie. Great runs also
for Joel Cox and Jack Wolfe Jr. The final count was as follows: Lex Johnson in
1st place, Joel Cox (#10) took 2nd, John Pierce placed 3rd, Jack Wolfe, Jr. came
in 4th and Matt Murphy rounding out the top 5. As an FYI for all you fans out
there….Jack Wolfe, Jr. in the #30 car is also a rookie this year and has been
placing in the top 10 consistently. Way to go Jack! And as a correction for last
week’s finish, with Rob Touchette being disqualified at the end of the night,
Jack Wolfe, Jr. finished in the 5th spot.
6/13/01 We are starting to make some headway on one of the back up cars this week photo shown below.
6/10/01 The A-Main event started out with a red flag being thrown in turn 4 of lap 1 as Joel Cox (#10) and Doug Davidson (#14) tangled and had to go to the back of the pack. Once the race started again, it was only a couple of laps, lap 3 to be exact, when a yellow was thrown as Lane Sundholm (#45) and Vince Hill (#26) locked up, again in turn 4. The #30 car of Jack Wolfe, Jr. had the lead from the green and managed to maintain his position as the race was on behind him with all drivers jockeying for position. The excitement was behind Jack Wolfe. Tom Moriarity had fast time tonight and spun a 12-car invert, so many of the fast cars were mid-pack and maneuvering their way to the front. The #22 of Lex Johnson and the #17 of Joe Constance were running door to door and right behind them was Marty Sokulski and John Pierce doing exactly the same and again right behind them was the #5 of Tom Moriarity and the #9 of Kelly Mann again, ‘door to door’. But that soon changed when Joe Constance spun, again turn 4 being the culprit, in lap 12 and brought out another yellow. So that took Joe out of that scenario and to the back of the pack. By lap 13, John Pierce had the lead, but by a very thin margin. Tom Moriarity was continuing his move forward and by lap 23 he was right in the thick of things with Marty and John. Now we had 3 cars so tight you could not have put a dime between them. Talk about edge of your seat racing, this was it. Moriarity kept trying to get under Marty on every turn. As the leaders were beginning to lap the back car of Rob Guenther in the #52, Marty got clipped and his hood buckled. This caused a bit of resistance in his ability to ‘maintain’. On the next go-round, there was a 2 car spin out between turns 1 and 2 and as Moriarity and Pierce came up to this, Moriarity and Pierce tried to avoid the accident which in turn caused the #5 car of Tom Moriarity to run up over the left side of the #47 car of John Pierce, which caused damage to both cars. Hence, another yellow. Both cars were checked out by officials and determined to be in good enough shape to continue on. Now all three of the leaders had pretty much equal handicaps. Marty’s car had the hood buckled, Moriarity had suffered damage to the right quarter panel and Pierce had damage to the left side of his car. But once the race began, it seemed that Tom Moriarity’s car had suffered much more damage than the other two as he just dropped way back and ‘rode it out’. As the race continued, the door to door scenario stayed in place with Marty taking a lead by a very slim margin on lap 35 but Pierce turns it on again and moves out just a ‘hair’. By lap 39 the #2 car of John Zaretzke has secured 3rd place and is moving in, but not in enough time to cause any threat to the two up front. When that checkered flag dropped, it was SO close that the naked eye had problems. But all the officials agreed it was ultimately John Pierce whose nose went across the finish line only micro inches ahead of Sokulski. What a race! Marty Sokulski took 2nd, John Zaretzke placed 3rd, Jack Wolfe, Jr. held 4th and rounding out the top five was Kelly Mann. Kelly Mann also took the Trophy Dash for the night.

6/02/01 Finally getting the updates done. The races rained out tonight and in last weeks race we didn't have a good night Jack started on the pole and had a ill handling car and it got loose going into turn one of the first lap and Jack lost the lead. On lap four Jack got spun out by Lex Johnson, Jack did a 360 spin and kept going and held on to fourth place without bringing out the caution, on about lap 10 Jack had a right rear tire go flat and went a lap down, while getting the tire changed. After rejoining the race Jack was working he way back up through the field and on lap 21 he lost control coming out of turn two and went spinning down the backstretch and ending up hitting the inside wall. After pulling into the pits for repairs and coming back out he finished in 16th about three laps down.
5/29/01 Jack started 10th in tonight's a main and we had a couple of caution flags in the first few laps of the race and Jack avoided a couple off crashes that happened right in front of him after that the race stayed green and Jack worked his way up to finish in 2nd place.
5/20/01 Jack started 10th in Last nights A feature and after avoiding two multiple car accidents he worked his way up to finish in second place the official finish and points standings should be posted by Thursday.
5/13/01 Last night Jack started 3rd in the A-Main and had his hands full with a very loose race car, he hung on to finish in 5th place.
