- Why Festivus?
- Good question, well I am tired of made up holidays based on religion or the idea of commemorating an event in history. I prefer an old fashion holiday that is based on the morals of family and friendship.
- What is Festivus?
- The holiday of Festivus falls on December 23 on the calendar, two days before that other "holiday," Christmas. Even though the holiday only falls on one day, it is celebrated throughout the last weeks of December. This holiday of family and friends centers around the head of the household, who leads the group in the Festivus activities.
- The History Of Festivus
- Many years ago in a state of mind not to far from here, on December 23, a man by the name of Frank Costanza went out to buy a doll for his son, George. As he reached for the last doll, so did another man. Frank yelled and fought, but he thought there had to be another way. Ulimately the doll was destroyed and Festivus was born, creating the phrase, "Festivus fr the rest-iv-us."
- Festivus Traditions
- On December 23:
- There is a grand feast where anything you want can be served.
- During dinner the custom "Airing of Grievances" is preformed. Waht is done during this activity is family members can tell how the have disappointed over the past year.
- After "Airing of Grievances," the "Feat of Strength" takes place. In this activity, the head of the household gives a friend or family member the honor of testing his/her strength with the head of the household. The honor is giving to a different person every year, and Festivus is not complete until the head of the family is pinned. The only way to get turn down the honor is if you have an appointment.
- Festivus does not have a big decorated tree. Instead there is an aluminum pole with no decorations such as tinsel because they are distracting. The pole must be silver, long, tall, skinny, hollow, and heavy.
