Onward to So Long

I trudged alone through the gray of the morning,
The sky on the city was cold and unkind,
Enough to make my throat sob
As my knuckles could not grasp the cup,

I thought of my love as I crossed the dark street,
And longed for the warmth of his mouth upon mine,

Bitter coffee could not compare
To the salt of his neck and the sweet of his hair,

My head flinched over to check for traffic
Before I traversed the oncoming lane,

A coat glimmered in the first errant shards of sun,
But they made it too bright for me to look on,

I stood still, afraid, and dared not stare,
For this glowing presence must be my desire,
It could not really be him,

It was.

We stood in the road like benevolent gods,
Inside and outside the lines of poor mortals,
Both oblivious to cars flashing by,

I did not marvel that daylight broke
When my dear one reached out to hold my face.
