BLACK BEAR GREAT DANES

MYRTLE THE TURTLE

One day I got a call from a veterinarian friend of mine. He asked if I would take another dane, well of course I would (as he well knew). So I drove the 30 miles to his office to pick her up. A show breeder had brought her in to get her ears cropped. She paid for the crop, about $50.00 way back then, but didn't want her back because of her color, and didn't want to sell her. She just wanted to find her a good home. It ended up the woman lived about 10 miles from me. She was so happy that Myrtle came to live with me. She was always a little shy, but a sweet girl.

BROTHERS HUGHIE AND GOLLUM

Hughie and Gollum were "miracle" babies. I had been told by several vets that Stryder was sterile due to an accident in his youth. He had live with unspayed gals all his life. But at age 7 something in him snapped (or healed as the case may be). In any event, he bred Myrtle, in the living room, with Spaz watching, and him screaming for help. It must have been too much for him, he had a stroke shortly after and I had to put him down. So Myrtle became a proud mother.

Hughie and Gollum stayed with me. They would chase the horse around the pasture, then she would chase them. One day when I was gone a "good ole boy" Texan came into my pasture looking for his horse that had gotten loose. He kicked Gollum in the gut, causing an intestinal torsion. The pain Gollum went through was awful. I took him to the emergency vet. clinic where my daughter worked. There was nothing they could do for him so I held him in my arms until he died. I wish to this day I could have caught the rotten man that did it. I would have given him a kick that would cause him great pain too.

One of Stryder and Myrtles pups, doing what pups do best.
