Elizabeth was the daughter of Joseph Sutton (b 1790 in County Carlow, Ireland) and Hannah Grimes (b 1797 in County Carlow, Ireland). Joseph and Hannah (Grimes) Sutton had the following children: Nancy H. Sutton-Woltz (b 1818 in New York), Thomas Sutton (b 1820 in Ohio), Jane Eliza Sutton-Lemon. Elizabeth
Sutton-Grogan, William Sutton (b 1834).

Note: Lee County, Illinois Historical Society records (Lee County Historical Society, the article is called "A Place Called Harmon") indicate that Thomas Sutton arrived in Harmon Township, Illinois, on October 10, 1854. Along with Thomas Sutton came his father, Joseph Sutton, and his brother, William Sutton. The Suttons purchased land and settled about one mile south of the "lake" (this lake was drained for use as crop land in 1896). It is said that Thomas Sutton had 19 children, and was jokingly bothered that there were not 20. After Thomas, Joseph, and William Sutton moved to Harmon Township, Illinois, they were joined by Thomas Sutton's brother-in-law, Patrick Grogan in 1856.
