County Kilkenny IrelandCounty Kilkenny has many ancient sites including Iron Age fortifications, inscribed stones and crosses, castles, and abbeys.    It became a part of Leinster province in 1210.   Lisdowney is made up of  1755 acres.  The Barony is Galmoy, and the Parish is Aharney.  The Diocese  is Ossory. Lisdowney is a village with a history and tales that stretch back to ancient times. It’s understood that the name came from the Irish word ‘Fiach’ and thus the translation of Lisdowney is ‘Lios Duin Fhiaich’, meaning ‘The Fort of Ravens’.

ShipThe Grogan family in Kilkenny was very small and seem to have all been located in the same area. There was a John Grogan of Coolcashin and Amable Fitzpatrick of Clontubrid married on Feb 9, 1774. It's possible they are the parents of Thomas who was born in 1796. The family story goes that four Grogan brother arrived in Newfoundland shook hands and departed. They never saw each other again. They arrived in the "New World" in November of 1823.

Judith, Thomas, and three Grogan brothers (name of brothers? One may have been Edmond Grogan) left Ireland in 1823.  They made their way to the US via Canada.  While on the ship, their young son, John, died and Judith gave birth to Edward William Grogan.  It is told that Edward William Grogan was born in Canadian waters, while the ship waited quarantine and docking.

Thomas and Judith (Bowe) Grogan resided briefly in Locksport, New York.   Soon they moved to Straitsville, Perry County, Ohio, where they were farmers and were laid to rest. Michael Bowe and John Bowe, two of Judith's brothers, and their families also lived in Ohio during the 1850's and 1860's. Perry County, Ohio was formed from Washington, Fairfield and Muskingum, on March 1, 1817. Early records indicate that tobacco was raised in large quantities, along with wheat, corn, oats, hay, cattle, pork and wool. This county was first settled in 1801. Reportedly, the first settler was Christian Binckley, who built the first cabin in the county, about five miles west of Somerset, near the present county line. New Lexington is now the county seat.
