Fuel Injection
Turning the Key
At this piont, I double checked everything, fuel lines, wiring, vacuum lines,
and intake fittings. All looks good. On the Electronic Control Unit (ECU),
there are five control knobs. I positioned all of these in their center of
travel as the video instructed. Now was the moment of truth. I turned the key,
and believe it or not, IT RAN!!!!!! Just fine, too! There's nothing to this fuel
injection stuff. I let it run, and inspected everything. No gas leaks, no vacuum
leaks, but the idol was really low. I turned the idol speed screw on the throttle
body, and all is well. I putzed with the ECU idol knob, leaning it out until it
idled more smoothly. I closed the hood and took it for a spin. The gas pedal was
like an on/off switch. I backed out of the driveway at idle, and put it in first.
I tried to get used to the funny gas pedal feeling. I let up the clutch and squacked
the tires down the street. Power-a-plenty, that's for sure. I drove around the block,
wearing the rubber off my tires, and then pulled back in the garage. The problem
with the gas pedal, was the position of the throttle cable. To reuse the original
throttle cable bracket, I had to bend it up a little to get it to work with the throttle body.
This lowered the cable below the linkage. I made a small bracket to raise the
cable about 1 1/2", level with the linkage. I took the Jeep out again, and this
time had great pedal response. I beat it a liitle harder this time, and found
some things that need adjustment. The video goes into detail on how to fine tune
the ECU settings, and I will get to that as soon as my fuel pressure gauge comes
in.
As you can see, the kit has plenty of cable length!
Summery
This job was alot to do, but no single thing was that hard. The initial results
are great, but I have yet to put it to test on the trail. I took about 12 hours
at a slow pace, and the only special tool I had to buy was a fuel line bender.
Here is a cost break down....
Intake and gasket..............$200.00
ProJection.....................$650.00
Fuel Line and Fittings.........$40.00
Misc (RTV, Nuts & Bolts, etc.).$30.00
TOTAL..........................$920.00
A bargain at anyprice :-)
