The Sansom Family

The Sansom Family

I will start with John Sansom of Lunenburg Co., Virginia. He is believed to have been born about 1715 and died 1786. He was the father of our Micajah Sansom, Sr. who married Dorothy (Dolles) Gipson, probably in Lunenburg Co., Virginia. They were found as members of the Meherrin Baptist Church ofLunenburg. They were obviously married before 1772, Virginia.


Micajah and Dorothy had at least 3 children that I am aware of Elizabeth Sansom, who married Daniel Malone; William H. Sansom who married Nancy Stinson; and our Micajah Sansom, Jr. who married Lemila (Permilia)Barfield Vann. According to the 1790 census of Burke County, North Carolina, at that time, they had 2 sons under the age of 16 and 3 daughters.


Micajah Sansom, Jr. was born 22 Feb. 1792 in Rutherford Co., N.C. ; He died 24 Dec. 1859 in Cherokee Co., Ala. and is buried in Gasden, Ala. On the 6 Nov. 1818 he married Lemila (Permilia)Barfield Vann, she supposedly being the daughter of a Joseph David Vann, brother of the notorious James Vann, who was quite a colorful character.


Micajah and Lemilla had 13 children:

1- Martha A. Sansom:
Born 1818 in Social Circle, Georgia she died 22 Feb. 1900 in Upshur Co., Tx. and is buried in the Little Mound Cemetery in Upshur Co., Tx. She married a Peter McKinney on 20 October 1846 in Walton co., Georgia.


2- Elizabeth (Eliza) Sansom:
Born 1820 in Georgia. She married Thomas Lassiter 12 August 1839 in Walton Co., Georgia. Thomas and Eliza had 3 children that I know of, Annie, John, and William.


3- William S. Sansom:
Born 1822 in Georgia. He married Martha Sellers 23 March 1845 in Newton Co., Georgia. William and Martha had 5 children that I know of; Mary, John, James, Lemila, and Micajah.


4- John Leonard Sansom:
Born 8 March 1824 in Georgia, died 30 April 1904 Georgia and is buried in Rocky Face Cemetery, Rocky Face, Georgia. He married Sarah Ann Chappel in 1848 in Georgia. John and Sarah had George Robert, John Clark, Sarah Lucy, and Micajah Sansom.


5- Mary Eleanor Sansom:
Born 31 May 1827 in Georgia and died 27 Feb 1902. She married Henry Patrick Heald on the 28 December 1841 in Walton Co., Georgia. Henry and Mary had the following children; Martha Euonia Clementine, Samuel Micajah, Mandy Jane, Francis (Frank) Hamon, James Henry, Rufus Marion Jackson, Mary Elizabeth Virginia (Jennie), John Thomas, Lewis Albert, and Frances Almeda Heald.


6- Oren Micajah Sansom:
Born 1828 in Georgia and died 1883. He married Mary Wilson 16 January 1850 in Walton Co., Georgia. Oren and Mary had Catherine Elizabeth, John M., Georgia Ann, and Thomas Richard Sansom.


7- James (Joe) Layfayette Sansom:
Born 2 June 1832 in Walton Co., Georgia. He died on the 21 February 1908 in Upshur Co., Texas and is buried in the Shady Grove Cemetery in Uphsur Co., Tx. He married Lavonia Josephine (Josie) Johnson on 20 April 1854 in Whitfield Co., Georgia. Joe and Josie had 9 children.


8- Nancy Jane (Jennie) Sansom:
Born 1834 in Georgia and died 22 November 1912. She married Thomas Y. Cain on 29 March 1868 in Baine Co., Ala.


9-Thomas Sansom:
Born 1835 in Georgia. He married Lucy Milliagan.


10- Ann Sansom:
Born 1838 Georgia and married Cal Brown. Cal and Ann had Chessie and Percy Brown.


11- Rufus Franklin Sansom:
Born 16 September 1840 in Georgia. He died 14 February 1885 in Etowah Co., Alabama. He married Lucy Margaret Collier. Rufus and Lucy had Annie Lucille, Laura, Henry Collier, Abner Milton, and Frank B. Sansom.


12- Emma Sansom:
Born 2 June 1847 in Walton Co., Georgia, died 9 August 1900 in Upshur Co., Tx. She is buried in the Little Mound Cemetery of Upshur Co., Tx. She married Christopher Bullard Johnson on 29 October 1864 in Alabama. Christopher and Emma Johnson had 8 children; Mattie Forest, Joe Bivens, Thomas Cooper, Edward Vann, Chester Lucy, Benjamin Cain, Mercer Mort, and Jennie Maud Johnson.
