| James Layfayette Sansom, otherwise known as 'Joe' was born in Walton County, Georgia on the 2 June 1832. He was the seventh child of Micajah and Lemila Sansom. In Whitfield County, Georgia on 20 April 1854 he married Lavonia Josephine 'Josie' Johnson, the daughter of James Jason Johnson and Nancy Ann Torrence of North Carolina. In a memoir written by a niece of his, J.L. and L.J. left Georgia after the death of his father and moved by covered wagon to Texas. They settled in Collin County, Texas where most of their children were born. He farmed and hauled freight from Jefferson to Collin Co. for a number of years. In the meantime, his mother and 2 sisters moved to Upshur County, Texas. By 1880 Joe and Josie also had moved their family to Upshur County, Texas where both are buried in the Shady Grove Cemetery. Joe and Josie had 9 children: 1- Dennis Marcus Sansom: Born in Whitfield Co., Georgia in Nov., 1856. His first marriage was to Emily C. Wilson about 1879 in Upshur Co., Tx. This marriage produced 2 sons: James P. Sansom (1880-1900) and Arthur Sansom (1882-1893). Both sons are buried with their mother in the Shady Grove Cemetery of Upshur Co., Tx. His second marriage was to Nancy (Nannie) J. Myhand Wilson in 1900, Upshur Co., Tx. She died in 1927 and is also in the Shady Grove Cem. In 1928, Dennis married Alice Beard. On the 1st of December 1929, Dennis Marcus Sansom died in Wood Co., Tx. and is buried in Shady Grove Cem. 2- Nancy Jane Sansom: Born in Collin Co., Tx. on the 20 March 1860, she married Francis Marion Hammock on 28 December 1882 in Upshur Co., Texas. Nancy Jane and Francis Marion are both buried in the Little Mound Cemetery of Upshur County, Texas. She died 31 December 1949. They had 8 children that I am aware of: Lein (Lynn/Leann), Vida A., Codie, Obie Jack, Effie/Zeffie, Virgil Kellie, Ruth and Nannie Ruth. 3- Mary Etta Sansom: Born 1861, Collin County, Texas. Married Jefferson Marshall Satterwhite 18 January 1883 in Upshur County, Texas. Jefferson M. was the son of Isaac W. Satterwhite (1832-1863) and Martha Ann Stringer (1835-1918). J.M. and Mary Etta had 5 children that I am aware of: Martin Jefferson, Walter, Exa Mae, Virgie L. and Emma/Etta Satterwhite. 4- Lavonia Josephine (Josie) Sansom: Born 29 September 1862 in Collin County, Texas. Married Josephus 'Joe' Newton Willingham 13 November 1879 in Upshur County, Texas. She died 1 June 1947 at Wills Point, Texas and is buried next to Joe in the Shady Grove Cem., Upshur Co., Tx. Unknown to that part of the family, her brother, James Thomas Sansom had also died the very same day. As the family drove up to the Shady Grove Cem., they were met by James Thomas's family. They proceeded to have a double funeral at the Shady Grove Community Center. 5- Julie Sansom: Born June, 1870 in Collin County, Texas and died before 1880 in Collin County, Tx. 6- William Rufus Sansom: Born 7 December 1873 in Collin County, Texas. Married Effie May Hays in 1899 in Upshur County, Texas. She was the daughter of Willie Preston Hays and Hulda Jane White. William and Effie had 3 daughter; Bertie, Ersie, and Willie Lois. William died 2 November 1905 in Upshur County, Texas and is buried at Shady Grove Cemetery, Upshur County, Texas. 7- James Thomas Sansom: Born 19 January 1876 in Collin County, Texas. He married Sarah Lula Edge in 1897 Upshur County, Texas, and died 1 June 1947 in Upshur County, Texas. He is buried in Shady Grove Cemetery. James Thomas and Sarah had 7 children: Mattie Pearl, Ruby Jane, Annie Mae, James Edge, Lula Ione, Charles Matthew, and William Arthur Sansom. 8- Marcus Randolph Sansom: Born 27 May 1878 in Collin County, Texas. Married Erin Crow in 1899, Upshur County, Texas. Marcus and Erin had 2 daughters; Velma Irene and Evolena Josephina Sansom. Both Marcus and Erin are believed to be buried in Crestview Memorial Cemetary in Wichita Falls, Texas. 9- Caree Lavonia Sansom: Born March, 1871 in Collin County, Texas. Married Jessie Cleveland (J.C./John) Satterwhite 19 December 1889, Upshur County, Texas. J.C. was the son of Francis Marion Satterwhite and Rebecca Jane Willingham, Rebecca being a sister to Josephus (Joe) Newton Willingham. J.C. and Caree had 5 children; Oliver, Clyde, Un named baby, Estes Leo, and Thelma Satterwhite. Thelma was raised by Dennis Marcus Sansom. Caree died on 1 December 1920 and J.C. died 19 Sep 1950 in Del City, Oklahoma Co., Oklahoma. He is buried in Sunnylane Cem. of that county, as is Thelma and her husband, William Harold Montgomery.
