Marlene bought number 24 without even seeing it because
she had heard her estranged daughter, Cheryl, was living in the street and
after a quarter of a century apart, Marlene thought it was time to build
some bridges.
Marlene had left when Cheryl was 11 and in the intervening years, Cheryl had
demonized her mother in her mind so when she found out who Marlene was, she
wanted absolutely nothing to do with her. But her grandkids, Danni and
Brett, did, and gradually Cheryl came to understand her mother.
And if she could one day find it in her heart to call Marlene 'mum', well
nothing would make the old girl happier. Marlene was a bit scatty and was
always on for a scam or a silly bet. After selling cosmetics door to door
and having a neat line in second hand VCRs, her last job was running a
'trash and treasure' store in town, inventing a story for almost every item
that passed through her wacky shop. |
