Sand & Finish
Before the sanding process can take place, some preparations may need to occur. For example:
- hanging plastic
- taping
- removing nails, tacks and/or staples from the surface of the floor
Sanding tools used:
- Edger: This is used to sand the edges of the floor along the walls and areas the drum sander cannot reach.
- Drum Sander: This is used to sand the large surface area of the floor.
Gregory Wood Floors uses a three (3) cut sanding process:
- The first cut (or rough cut) uses a heavy grit paper, depending on the condition of the floor. The rough cut usually starts with 60 grit paper, but if the floor has paint, wax, or water-born finish, a heavier grit paper (such as 24 or 36 grit) may be used. The intention of the rough cut is to ensure that the floor will be flat and level throughout.
- The second cut uses 80 grit paper, and takes out all the heavy grit swirl marks from the edges of the wall caused by the edger. This cut will also remove all 45° angle marks caused by the rough cut, and further smoothen and clean the surface.
After the second cut, the corners will be scraped and hand-sanded to 100 grit, as well as any areas with original finish that the edger and/or drum sander could not reach.
- The third cut uses 100 grit paper, removes the remaining swirl marks from the previous cut, and will even further smoothen and clean the surface of the floor.
After the cutting process:
- The floor is buffed in order to flatten and smooth out the surface to an almost Balsa wood texture, which will ensure that the floor will look like glass when coated.
- The grain may need to be popped in order to accept stain. This is done by using steel wool.
For a natural wood finish, Gregory Wood Floors applies three (3) coats of finish:
- 1st coat: Sealer/polyurethane combination
- 2nd coat: Polyurethane
- 3rd coat: Polyurethane
- The coating process is different if stain is used. The 1st coat is the applied stain.

Staining process:
- The floor will be prepared using the sanding/cutting process.
- During the second cut, stains will be mixed to the customers desired color, and a test spot will be presented. This is done during the second cut so that the test spot can be sanded out.
- After the final cut, the stain is applied to the floor and wiped up. Then, the floor is left to dry. The applied stain will then be the 1st coat.
- Two coats of polyurethane are then applied.

Screen & Coat
Screening the floor is done before the 1st coat is applied, and between each coat thereafter. The purpose of this is to break down the grit and trash (hair, dirt, etc.). It also smooths over the surface, yet makes it abrasive enough to hold the following coat of finish.
Gregory Wood Floors uses only National Wood Floor Association certified products to ensure there will be no chemical breakdown over time. If problems occur, such as finish peeling, gatering, bubbles, or puddles, the coat will be replaced at no charge to the customer.
We use a self-leveling polyurethane, making each coat as level, flat, and smooth as possible.
