Nadia Dabbagh, was born in 1990 and kidnapped first to Saudi Arabia and then to Syria in 1992. When her American mother successfully won a Syrian court order affirming her custody, Nadia's father abandoned her there. Syrian officials refuse to return Nadia to her mother. Although she is a U.S. citizen, seven years old, and guilty of no crime, Nadia remains captive in Syria. The authorities there will not tell the U.S. Embassy where she is being held, or by whom. Her father has gone back to Saudi Arabia to avoid the Syrian and U.S. warrants, which the Saudis will not enforce. Nadia has not seen her mother for five years. |

WHILE Maureen Dabbagh can no longer continue to pay Syrian authorities in the hopes of actually having her child returned, she says that she is unsure whether or not she would again pay $200,000 for the promise of ever seeing her child again. What is certain is that the kidnapping of Nadia Dabbagh has been a generous source of revenue for various Syrian officials. May 3, 1998 Lebanese sources state that Nadia Dabbagh is being held in Syria by terrorist group known as the Muslim Brotherhood. While her mother continues efforts to rescue her child, Nadia's father continues to elude both U.S. and Syrian Authorities. |

Six years ago, I was living a life of happiness. I had a beautiful daughter named Nadia, a husband and I was doing work as a trauma nurse that made me feel like I was making a difference in peoples lives. Six years ago all that ended. It turns out my husband had decieved me and in fact was wanted for crimes in several countries. He escaped from the U.S. and took my daughter as a hostage. I lost my husband and my daughter on the same day. I thought the government of the United States would help me. And some of them tried. The FBI, Interpol and American embassies abroad have worked aggressively to find my child. Voice of America has recently put up a website and made announcements all over the middle east asking for information on Nadia. But often, I found that the US government impeded the process of getting my daughter home. There are laws against abducting a child and taking them to a foreign country. However, I have since found that these laws are basically political fluff. They look good, but you cannot get the government to act on them. So I gave up my job and began struggling to get my daughter back myself. I educated myself on International Abductions to the point that I wrote a book on it to help other parents. Now, we know where my child is. Nadia is being held in Syria. The government of Syria announced in June of 1998 for the first time ever to U.S. authorities that in fact they do know where Nadia is. There is absolutely no reason for Nadia to be in Syria. Contrary to false reports from the Syrian Embassy in Washington, Nadia's father is not in Syria. They just say that so people will stop writing. I have full legal custody in both the US and Syria. There are no problems with the paperwork. For some unknown reason, someone in Syria wants to hold my daughter hostage. Whether this is related to the ransom demands I have received in the past, I cannot say for certain. No one will tell me the REAL reason my daughter is being held as a prisoner in Syria. I need to say that the people of Syria have been wonderful to me. Many have written letters to their own government officials supporting my efforts to bring Nadia home. This is just a few people in the Syrian government with questionable motives... |
In 2008, when she turns 18, she will be old enough to leave Syria and her father without his permission. Update on Nadia Dabbagh: www.forthelost.org |
