Can Austin Powers have another sucessful movie 5 years after the original was released knowing full well that pop culture fads usually die 2 years?
Yes. Yes he can.
Austin Powers In Goldmember proves, without a shadow of a doubt, that Austin Powers is a pop culture icon and, most likely, one of the greatest comedy movies and most sucessful trilogies of all time.
This movie is most likely the final Austin Powers movie ever. But just like I refuse to believe that Mystery Science Theater 3000 will never be back on the air, I believe that there will be another Austin Powers movie. I have been right before. Another of my favorite shows, Quantamn Leap is starting new episodes this fall after a 9 year hiatus. If Quantamn Leap can do it, why not MST3K and Austin Powers? Even if the wait is LONG.
They went through the 90's in part one. Went through the 60's in part two. What is the logical choice in part 3? The 70's. The disco era is parodied in this adventure.
Mike Myers is back as Austin. The beginning of the film is the reason to see the movie RIGHT THERE! 5 minutes there and already the movie is golden. Cameo appearances GALORE!! :-)
Dr. Evil (Mike Myers also) is once again in his evil ways. Mini-Me (Verne Troyer) still hates Scott Evil (Seth Green) who stil has trouble having a relationship with his father, Dr. Evil. This movies evil scheme: Dr. Evil plans on creating a laser that will pull an asteroid from outer space and send it to Earth crashing into the Polar Icecaps thereby melting them and flooding the Earth.
Evil plan? Yes. But this time, Austin catches Dr. Evil before he even creates the laser. For this act, Austin is knighted by the Queen Of England but at the coronation ceramony, he is embarrased when his father (Nigel Pierce Lord Of The Rings) doesn't show up.
And that is the basis of the movie.
Meanwhile, Dr. Evil finds out that finally, Scott Evil wants to take over the "Family Buisness" and take over the world. He even has started losing his hair.
After a very, very, VERY funny scene in the prison, Dr. Evil and Mini-Me escape the jail and continue on with their plan. They are smarter this time, as they distract Austin Powers by kidnapping his own father! And worse, take him back to 1975 and have him in the hands of international treasure hunter, Goldmember (Mike Myers again!). Goldmember, named for after having his testicles cut off in a smelting accident, is Dutch and Austin's dad HATES the Dutch. Why? I don't know. He just does.
So, Austin travels back to 1975 to track Goldmember and rescue his dad. He is sucessful and along the way meets another spy, a hot afro spy named Foxy Cleopatra (Beyonce Knowles of Destiny's Child). Austin, first meeting the Fook twins (get it?) finds his father and takes them back to 2002. But his father is taken back by Dr. Evil.
Austin and Foxy go back to 2002 and meet the mole that has inflitrated Dr. Evil's headquarters, Number 3 (Fred Savage of the Wonder Years). It turns out he has a HUGE FREAKIN' mole above his mouth! This part is funny and all the parts with Number 3 are funny as they react to the mole in a totally improvised scene that is funny. The mole lets them know about Dr. Evil's evil plans.
Meanwhile, Austin's father convinces Mini-Me that he is the brains behind the plan and as a result, along with Scott Evil's new hairdo, makes Mini-Me wanna leave Dr. Evil, forever! And he does!
Austin and Foxy travel to Japan and engage in the Japanesse culture in a damn funny scene. After returining, and encountering Fat Bastard (Mike Myers AGAIN!), Austin and Foxy find Dr. Evils new base inside a submarine. Mini-Me suddenly shows up and wants to team up with Austin! In a pretty funny scene, Austin and Mini-Me engage in a fight but soon reconcile and Mini-Me looks so funny dressed as Austin Powers!
Austin, Foxy, and Mini-Me inflitrate Dr. Evil's headquarters and try to stop the laser from firing. Along the way, Austin's father reveals to his son a shocking revelation: Dr. Evil is really his own brother! THAT was quite the shocker. Dr. Evil and Austin Powers were seprated after their mom died! You would expect Austin to get really angry, but instead, he embraces his dad and Austin, his father, Dr. Evil, and Mini-Me engage in a group hug. Sniff, that is quite emotional.
But Scott Evil won't have none of that and wants to continue with the laser. Luckily, Dr. Evil stops it in time and catch Goldmember back in 2002 in time to save the world! Hooray!!
Austin, his father, Foxy, Dr. Evil (real name Frankie Powers), and Mini-Me all enjoy the Austin Powers movie.
But the door is left open for a sequel as Scott Evil is now in control and vows to kill Austin Powers once and for all!
But first, alittle dancing.
Yeah baby! Yeah!
Feedback for this is welcome man!
