The True Story of the 1997 CCHS 40th Reunion

as told by Joe Ganim

Have you ever looked forward to something and been disappointed? Well, that was not the case at our 40th. reunion held on 7-25 to 7-27-97. 42 of our classmates came to this great weekend affair. They came from Alaska, California, Arizona, North Dakota, Michigan, Texas and Ron Blakeslee even rode a bike from Alden, New York. It was marvelous to see the mini-reunions take place asclassmates embrassed each other as they came in for Friday's activities. Kathleen Lazare Frere cried the whole weekend because as she said, " I was overcome with joy". There were no wallflowers that evening as everyone hurried to great one another. One of the workers at the Ramada Inn, where Friday's activities took place, said that she had worked several reunions but that she not seen any where " the people genuinely cared for each other".

We had plenty of food, so much so, that we had to take "doggy bags" home with us. The reason for this was that we were so busy "mixing", we forgot to eat. After the scheduled activity, many of us went to the Ramada Lounge where we continued the evening catching up on the last 40 years.

Many of us got together for breakfast Saturday at the Ramada before we embarked on our activities for the day. For some, that meant a golf outing at the Scarlett Oaks Country Club, organized by B.J. Pettigrew. For others, it was a trip to Tamarack for shopping and looking at WV arts & crafts. And still for others, it was an opportunity to visit friends or relatives, visit the city they hadn't seen for awhile, or just relax after their long trip .

The golfers had a great time even though it was a hot and humid day. After it was over with, the team of Ron Wagner & Doug Aigner took 1st. place honors even though Ted Marchal had the best score of the day, an 81. John Crede won a dozen golf balls for his play. Unfortunately, they were his own golf balls which were found by the other golfers scattered all over the Scarlett Oaks course.

For the shoppers, it was a trip to Beckley to Tamarack. Although prices were high (ex. a coffee table for $15,000), we still had fun looking. We took a break from shopping to have lunch at the cafeteria, operated by the Greenbriar. The most popular sandwich was the "Fried Green Tomato". Believe it or not, it was really good. Maybe, because it had 3 strips of bacon. After exploring a while longer, we went to the theater where 4 young people sang, danced, and did comedy routines with WV themes.

Saturday evening was the main function of the weekend, the dinner-dance at the Edgewood Country Club. This was the only semi-formal eventof the reunion. Fr. Edward Sadie, pastor of Sacred Heart parish and director of CCHS, was our guest for dinner. He spoke of the history of the school, giving its progress including rennovations to the building which he invited us to see.

After dinner, gag gifts and door prizeswere presented. An example of a gag gift was the "Miracle Award" presented to Mike Bonham who was reported dead, but who came back to life to attend our 40th. reunion. Some really great prizes were given to the lucky people whose names were drawn. John Crede made 5 sets of bookends made from walnut and coal taken from family property. They were engraved on one side "CCHS" and on the other "'57-"97". Just Beautiful!!! Myrna Frame donated a great painting, which she did, of the Charleston skyline reflected in the waters of the Kanawha River. And Bobbie Brotherton Schell donated 3 bottles of WV wine.

Perhaps the most difficult chore of the weekend, was selling the tee shirts and hats. They were like the loaves and fishes. Everytime you sold one, two more showed up. These were the shirts & hats with the reunion logo on them. Bill Simpson designed the logo and Catherine Coughlin Pozega found the company who provided the shirts and hats and imprinted the logo. They looked great and were a bargain, especially when we had to sell some for $1.

The music provided by Ted Marchal was wonderful. The memories of out high school days came back with each song. In fact that evening, it seemed as though we were back in time 40 years ago reliving all the good times we had with one another as we went from table to table with the great 50's music in the air. Much "thanks" to Ted for all you did on the music and acting as d.j.

While this was going on the photographer showed up to take the class picture which he had available for us for $9. To top off the evening, the last member of the class showed up at literally the 11th. hour. Mike Creamer came in after it was time to go home. Is this not a typical Mike Creamer entrance? He bought the last of the tee shirts and it was great to see Mike again.

The next morning, many of us gathered for Sunday Mass at Sacred Heart where we sat together in the same pews we sat in when we were seniors. Fr. Sadie recognized us during Mass and had Debra Sullivan, CCHS principal, take us on a tour of the school. Afterwards, we met at Bob Evans Restuarant for breakfast. Then "IT" was over!!!!!

How could all we had planned for and looked forward to go by so quickly? For those who antipated this, we wanted to cling onto each minute. To those who could not make the weekend due to job, illness, or other plans, you were with in spirit, especially Sally Jo Griffith Crowley who was on the planning committee but was taken ill while visiting her daughter in Houston. We missed you Sally Jo.

One last thought about the weekend and a tribute to all of us "the class of '57". Many times, you hear of spouses who dread going to their mates reunions. One spouse stated that she had more fun and felt more at home at our reunion than when she went to her own class reunion. That says it all!!!!!!!

What's next? The planning committee will now go into "Reunion Withdrwal". Seriously, we need to think of the next reunion. Some ideas mentioned are a Reunion Cruise or a trip to the Greenbriar. Some say the next reunion should be the 50th. and some say in 5 years. We neen your input on that matter as well as what we could have done this time to have made your weekend more enjoyable by using the e-mail link.
