NEW BARK TOWN:
You start out in your room. Go downstairs and talk to your mom, she asks you
what day of the week it is (this is more important than it sounds!). Then leave the
house, go into the big building which is a Pokémon Lab. Professor Elm will let you chose your first Pokémon:
Chikorita - Grass type, I chose this
After you pick your Pokémon head west to the next town. You don't have Pokéballs
yet so just keep going. Eventually you get to...
CHERRYGROVE CITY:
Talk to the old man at the start of this town, and he takes you on
a "tour" of the town. When he's done, he gives you a Town Map!
You can look at it by going under your Gear screen.
Use the Pokémon Center if you like, then head north. Eventually you get to a hut.
Inside you'll meet... Oak! He gives you a Pokédex. Now go back to the starting
town. You'll meet your rival on the way. He will battle you with whatever
Pokémon from the start is strong against yours (I chose Chikorita, he chose
Cyndaquil). After you win, go back to Prof. Elm's lab, and a guy
there will give you some PokéBalls. Now you can buy Pokéballs at the store.
Go catch some Pokémon! I recommend you get a Pidgey, Geodude and a Sentret
(the squirrel).
Now, from the 2nd town, go north (if you had tried earlier two kids would
have blocked you) then go west to get to the next town (ignore the cave,
it's dark)
VIOLET CITY:
IN this town you will find... your first gym! Flying Gym?
-----------
This is too easy! Grab a Geodude, raise it to level 9 when it gets Rock
Throw, then you'll have no problem trashing this guy.
Now go north, into the Japanese tower thing. It's a... Bellsprout Temple?
What the... Anyways, make your way to the top, and at the top, your rival
will beat up a Monk then leave. Now fight the monk (he uses Bellsprout
and Hoothoot) and if you win you get HM05. Now go back to the Pokémon Center
in Violet City
and you'll see one of Oak's Aides. If you have an open slot in your team
(if you have 5 or less Pokémon) he will give you an egg. Togepi egg!
Leave the center, go south, as the west is blocked by a weird tree thingy
(don't worry, we'll get to that later). You'll get to some caves, and in
one cave you'll have to put a Puzzle together (it's Kabuto). If you
put it together a trapdoor will open and you'll fall into another cave.
In here you fight these weird symbol Pokémon that all look different,
but are the same species (I've heard that you get some kind of secret
if you catch every variety of this Pokémon, but I'm not sure what it
is. I think it has something to do with the Game Boy Printer, though).
Leave this place, go south, and you'll get
to a Rock Tunnel like cave. Go through it (it's pretty short) and you'll
come out near the next city.
AZALEA TOWN:
You can't get into the gym so ignore it for now. Go into the north
most house and talk to the man. He runs out. Go to the well outside
of the town and go in. Team Rocket has kidnapped some Slowpokes!
Go through the well, trashing the Rockets (there's only 4 of 'em).
Now, exit the well and go to the gym. Bug Gym!
-----------
Talk about lame! C'mon, a Metapod AND a Kakuna? Oh jeeze. Use a
Fire or Flying type for this one (I used Pidgeotto) and you'll
have an easy time of it.
Now go west, and you'll fight your rival again. He has Zubat and
Gastly now, plus the evolved form of whatever his first Pokémon was.
Keep going west and you'll get to the Ilex Forest. Chase the Farfetch'd
(I think its a Farfetch'd) through the woods until it runs into a
person. The Police Officer will give you HM01 (Cut). Use it to get
out of the forest (I taught it to Sentret). Now go
north, till you get to the next town...
GOLDENROD CITY:
In the house south of the town you'll meet an old man and old woman who
will breed Pokémon for you! More on that later. Oh btw if you look
in the grass here, you can get Drowzee and Abra! Pick either one up,
they're good. Now go into town.
One of the buildings here is a BIKE SHOP! Talk to the man behind the
counter for a free bike! Yep, you don't even need a bike voucher.
Also in another house there is a sort of underground tunnel with
a bunch of trainers and a locked door. You can't open the door
right now, so just ignore this tunnel altogether. Also, don't bother
with the big metal looking tower. Later my friends, later.
Anyway, there's another gym here... the NORMAL gym!!! The trainer here
has NORMAL Pokémon!
-----------
Miltank is tough. She has a VERY strong Tackle like move that will
almost always kill your Pokémon in one hit (unless its rock type, like
Geodude, which is what I used for this gym). She also has a very annoying
recover move. This is the first really tough gym, so take a few potions!
After you win this one, go into all the houses and talk to everyone. In
one house (it's the one with flowers everywhere) a girl will give you an
item (dunno what it is, I think it's a squirtle shell). Now go north
to some kind of park. Check the grass here, you can get Hoot Hoot,
Sunkern, Weedle, Kakuna (I think Caterpie/Metapod in Gold), and
some others.
If you leave and go east you'll run into that crazy tree thing again.
Talk to it, and (assuming you have the "squirtle shell" the girl
gives you) it will attack you! It's a Pokémon, Sudowoodo! Make sure
you catch it, it's good (and it's the only one in the game). It's
at level 20 so make sure your Pokémon are around that level. I used
the evolved form of Chikorita btw. Now go north to the next town.
ECRUTEAK CITY:
In one house here there are Japanese singing girls. Fight them all,
(each one uses an Eevee evolution, including two
new ones!). Then talk to the businessman to get HM03, containing the
incredible Surf skill, one of the best attacks in the game. Now, go
fight the gym - GHOST GYM!!
-----------
Whhhoooooo!!! This one is HARD!! I recommend using a strong Water Pokémon
with Surf, Fire Pokémon with Ember, or Grass Pokémon with Razorleaf. These
guys have a VERY powerful Voodoo type move where they stab themselves and
cause big damage to themselves, but then YOU take that damage for every
turn afterwards! Ouch! Not only that, but Gengar has Hypnosis! Yaaahhh!
This is definitely the HARDEST gym you've fought so far, so bring plenty
of Potions!
Beat this gym, then go west. There's a Miltank farm here, and if you
look in the grass you can get Meowth, Magnemite, Farfetch'd, Tauros,
and... MILTANK! Yay! Now, go south to get to the Seaside Town.
OILVINE CITY:
The gym is empty! But your rival will come out and talk to you then
leave. Talk to everyone in town. One guy gives you a Fishing Rod,
another gives you HM04. Since there's nothing else to do here
Surf south then west to get to Cianwood City.
CIANWOOD CITY:
First of all, talk to the man in the south-most house. He gives you some
type of item, apparently it's medicine (you'll need it later). Now
go fight the gym - Fighting Gym!
-----------
Yay! Easiness returns. Use Hypno or Pidgeotto against the Primeape.
Chikorita (or any other strong grass type, such as Gloom or Weepinbell)
against the Poliwrath. It's that easy.
Now go outside the gym and talk to the woman there. She gives you
HM02. Use it to go back to Oilvine City and make your way up the
"lighthouse". At the top you'll meet a girl and a Pokémon (it's
Centerity, I think). Give the girl the Medicine from Cianwood
and she'll leave. Also I think if you talk to Centerity he heals your
Pokémon (not 100% sure on that though). Now go back to the gym and
you can fight her Steel type Pokémon!
-----------
A semi-tough gym. Use Graveler against the two Magnemites. Any water or fire
type can take down the Steelix (I used Kingler) but it will take a
while. Still, it's not terribly tough.
Now head east, past Ecruteak City, and enter the cave (you'll need
Flash) and exit the other side.
MAHOGANY TOWN:
There's a fat man blocking the gym, so go north (not east, a man is blocking
the east and takes money off you for nothing!). Eventually you get to a lake.
There's a Red Gyarados in the lake, surf in and fight it (make sure you capture
it, it's GOOOOOOD!) After you do that, go back on dry land and you'll meet...
Lance?! Lance, the Dragon Trainer! Talk to him and he flies away. Now go
back to the town and enter the "store". Lance will beat up some guys then
open a hidden passage. Go down it!
It's a Team Rocket Hideout!! Defeat everyone inside (they're not
that tough) and pick up every item (some of them might be keys). Stay
away from the striped floor on the first floor, if you touch them you'll be
sent into battle with "wild" Pokémon that you can't capture or run away
from. Make sure to "turn on" the computer on the first floor. Then you'll
be able to get into the room with the Blue bird in it. You fight some guy
(the boss of Team Rocket?) then he runs away. Make your way to the door to
the "reactor" room, and the Boss guy will show up again with a girl. Lance
shows up and fights the guy, and you get to fight the girl. Now go into the
Reactor room and defeat all the Electrodes.
Once you do that you'll be able to get into the gym - Ice Gym!! The guys here
use Ice types.
-----------
More easiness! Grass or Electric attacks will wipe out the Seel and Dewgong.
I recommend Electric because Grass is weak vs. Ice. Use Magneton or Skiploom/Centerity.
Fire or Rock will easily take care of the Torvado.
Easy huh?
Now, you could go onto the next gym, but... first let's backtrack a little...
GOLDENROD CITY REVISITED:
Fly back to Goldenrod City and you'll find that Team
Rocket has taken over! Enter the large, metal looking tower in the
northwest and make your way up, destroying the Rockets. There's a big
locked door, but you can't open it right now. Just keep going up and you
run into the boss guy again. Beat him (he's not very hard if you
have some Psychic or Ground Pokémon - I used Hypno and Slowbro) then
leave the building. Remember that underground tunnel with the locked
door in it? Now you can go through that door!
It's a Team Rocket Prison?! As soon as you get in, your Rival will
fight you. He has some new Pokémon - a Magnemite and Misdeavus
(Meowth-like thing) in addition to the three he had the last time
you fought him. Waste him, then go through the "prison" by using
the blue control panel things to open the doors. You have to flip
the switches in a certain order to make the correct path appear.
The correct order is: 3, 2, 1. This will open a way to that
Cassidy look-alike in the corner. Beat her, then go on through
that blue door thing. In here, beat all the Rockets then talk to
the guy in blue. He gives you an item, it may be a key. Now
go up the stairs, you end up... in the basement of the department
store! Leave this place then go back to the metal looking tower.
Now that you've got that key, go open that huge locked door you
saw earlier. Keep going up and eventually you'll fight the boss
guy and the boss girl again. Then the blue guy comes out and talks
to you, gives you another item, then you can leave. Now Fly back to
Mahogany Town.
Once you're there, head East till you get to a cave. Ice cave!
In here you'll find some slippery ice things. Figure them out,
they're fun! Make sure you pick up EVERY item, one of them is
an HM that will be very important later on. In one area of this
cave, you'll have to push rocks into holes. Then you'll be able
to reach the ladder that leads out of this cave... and to the
next town!
Oh btw, after you beat the Team Rocket tower in Goldenrod, go back into the
tower and talk to the green-haired girl at the front counter.
Answer her questions (yes, yes, yes, no, yes, no) and she gives
you a Radio! Trust me, you'll need it.
BLACKTHORN CITY:
Your last gym is here - Dragon Gym!! Here you fight all Dragon
types.
-----------
It's a good thing you just got out of the Ice Cave, because as
you probably know by now, Dragons' only weakness is Ice. Use one
of the many Ice Pokémon from the cave (Jynx is a great choice) and you
should be able to take these guys down easily! Just watch out
for Kingdra. It's part-Water, and rather resistant to Ice.
Use strong Normal-type attacks on this guy.
The Gym Leader does not give you the badge. Surf in the pool
behind the gym and you'll get to a cave. Go in it! You'll need
HM06 to get rid of the Whirlpools. In this cave there is a Pokéball,
and if you get it, the Gym leader will show up and give you the
Badge! Badge #8!
Now you have two choices here - onto the Elite Four, or go catch
Houou/Lugia. I recommend you go after Ho-Oh/Lugia first.
HO-OH AND LUGIA
Which one of these two legendary bird Pokémon you can catch right now
depends on which version you're playing. Don't worry - you'll be able to capture
the other one later. If you're playing Gold, you can get Ho-Oh now;
if Silver, go ahead and grab a Lugia!
To get Ho-Oh, the Fire bird, go to Ecruteak City and enter the
north-most building, where a tunnel will lead you to a tower. Climb
the tower and you'll find Houou at the top. You only have one chance
to capture it (it's at level 40) and it's one of the best Pokémon in
the game, so make sure you get it!
Lugia, the Psychic bird, is found in the caves between Oilvine
and Cianwood. Enter the upper-right cave and, after a bit of
exploring, you'll find Lugia, also at level 40. Like Ho-Oh, it only
appears once in the entire game, so don't mess up!
VICTORY ROAD AND INDIGO PLATEAU
Now that you've got the strongest Pokémon in the game, it's time to
take on the Elite Four! Go to New Bark Town
and Surf to the east. Eventually you'll reach a new area.
Check your map. Look familiar? Sure does to me... Go into the
first cave you see, you'll need HM07 (the Waterfall-climbing HM)
to get through it. On the other side, you'll fight MANY trainers
before coming up to another, very short cave. At the end your
Rival will battle you. He has 6 Pokémon now. His Magnemite
has evolved, and he will also have the final evolution of his
first Pokémon. Waste him, then exit the cave. You've made it
to Indigo Plateau!
Just like in the old games, there's a combination Pokémon Center/
shop here. Heal your Pokémon and buy any necessary items, then
head down the stairs in the back to challenge the Elite! Just like
in the previous games, you must beat all of them in order without
a trip to the Pokémon Center. You can use items between matches,
though. Are you ready? Yep. Let's go! Oh btw the team I used
to beat the Elite Four was Meganium, Lugia, Centerity, Pidgeot,
Graveler and Slowbro; so these strategies are based on the team
that I used.
-----------
This guy likes to use Psychic types. Use a strong Bug or Dark Pokémon, or
a Psychic type with non-Psychic attacks (I used Slowbro - he can
wipe out the Xoqos with just two hits from Surf). Fly destroys
Exeggutor, while Slowbro won't stand more than two hits from
Razorleaf or Thunder Punch.
-----------
Koga has been promoted! As you can see, he still uses Poison
and Bug types. A Psychic or Ground type will take him out. Again,
I used Slowbro (and Graveler). Just watch out for that pesky
Forestress and its super annoying Explosion. It has a dual
weakness to Fire, so any Fire attack will be able to take it
down.
-----------
Bruno is still among the Elite, but he certainly hasn't grown any
smarter. Any Psychic or Flying type will totally waste his team,
I used Pidgeot and Slowbro. Slowbro can also quickly Surf the Onix
out of the game as well.
-----------
She uses all Dark types. Because Dark is VERY strong against Psychic,
leave your Psychic-type out of this fight. Use a Fighting-type, or,
if you don't have those, any strong non-Psychic type will do.
But!! It's not over yet. You still have one more battle... no,
it's not Gary, Ash or your rival, it's....
-----------
Lance the Dragon Trainer has returned! This battle looks very
tough and it IS tough... if you don't have an Ice Pokémon by
your side, that is! Dragonite is Dragon/Flying, and that means
QUADRUPLE damage from Icers. So bring along a Jynx, Inomu or
some similar Ice-type. Gyarados is definitely Electric bait
(like Centerity) and Aerodactyl and Charizard can be quickly
Surfed out by a Slowbro (Slowbro is just such an incredible
Pokémon for fighting the Elite Four! ^_^). And if all else fails,
whip out that Lugia and use Hyper Beam like there's no tomorrow!
(If you've got gold, use Ho-Oh - I don't know what moves it
has though)
Congratulations!
You're now the Pokémon League champion!! But... your adventure
isn't quite over yet....
ALL ABOARD THE ST. ANNE!:
After the credits, you'll end up back where you started. Go to
the Pokémon lab in the north and talk to the professor. He'll
give you an item, apparently a ticket for the St. Anne. Now
Fly to Oilvine City, and enter the southernmost
building. A man in here would have blocked you earlier, but now
that you've got the ticket, he'll let you pass. Welcome aboard!
There's a sailor blocking your path on one floor; to make him
move, defeat all the trainers on the previous floor. Make your
way through the ship, fighting everyone as you go, and eventually
you'll meet the Captain. Talk to the little girl, and she'll take
you to her room. Now leave the ship, and you'll find yourself in...
VERMILION CITY:
Vermilion City!! Go ahead, look around, it's pretty much the same!
The Pokémon Fan Club is still around, and apparently that Machop is
STILL stomping the land flat! Even the music is more or less the same!
Unfortunately, there's a HUUUGE Snorlax blocking Diglett's Cave, so
you can't go that way... better come back later.
Anyway, after you're done exploring, time for a rematch with our old pal,
Lt. Surge! Just chop down the bush and go in. Luckily, we don't have to
flip any switches to reach him!
-----------
Any Ground type can totally waste this team; I used Graveler. Grass
types are also fairly resistant to Electric, so use them if you don't
have any Ground types.
Once you beat Surge, he gives you what appears to be a Thunder Badge.
Now head north to...
SAFFRON CITY:
Just the way we remember it! The Silph Tower is still there, although
you can't go very far into it. Copycat is still around as well, and
apparently her Doduo has evolved into a Dodrio! The Fighting Dojo
is here, but nobody will fight you; there's still a Poké Ball laying
around. I wonder if it's the Fighting-type that Ash didn't choose?...
Anyways, head on over to the Gym, where you'll find lots of Channelers
and Psychics. Figure out the transporters (they're fun!) and you'll
get to...
-----------
Apparently Sabrina ditched the Venomoth :( Oh well. Just use a strong Bug or Dark
type or a Psychic type with non-Psychic powers (Lugia and Slowbro are
good) and you'll beat her easily (kind of a disappointment, cause she was
harder than heck to beat back in Red/Blue).
Win this fight and you'll get a Marsh Badge (or is it a Soul Badge? Hmmm...)
Now head West, to...
CELADON CITY:
If you climb up the stairs in the back of the Game Freak Inc. tower, you
will NOT get Eevee! Darn. Now head on over to the gym, where you'll face...
-----------
The same strategy from Red/Blue will work here - any Flying or Fire type
will do the job! Just hope they don't use Sleep Powder on you - they did
that to me, and I couldn't tell which Items were Awakenings, so... well,
you get the idea :P
Now head on back to Saffron, then head north to...
CERULEAN CITY:
The gym is completely empty! So head East to what used to be the Power Plant.
Talk to everyone inside, and on the way out a guy will talk to you. Now go
back to Cerulean and enter the gym. A Rocket will bump into you, say something,
then leave. Search the small pool of water in the middle of the gym till you
find an item. Now head north, to where Bill's place used to be. There you'll
find a boy and a girl (apparently smooching in front of Bill's place, haha). They
both run off. Now head back to the gym and fight...
-----------
The girl who was smooching up at Bill's place was none other than the Cerulean Gym
Leader, Misty! Just like in Red/Blue/Yellow, she's got Water-types,
and a strong Electric-type will be able to wipe them all off the map. The only
exception is pesky Water/Ground hybrid Quagsire. Bring in a Grass-type to deal with
this slimy critter.
You get a Cascade Badge if you win. Now head back to Celadon City, and take Cycling
Road to the west. Keep going south till you reach...
FUCSHIA CITY:
The Safari Zone and Pokémon Zoo are GONE!! (apparently destroyed by Team Rocket...) But if you want there is still some
butt to be kicked. Remember those annoying fake walls in Fucshia Gym in the Red/Blue/
Yellow versions? Well this game has something even more annoying - fake Trainers!
Every trainer in this gym looks like the Gym Leader, but only one is the real thing.
The one you want is on the far-left side of the gym.
-----------
Now since Koga is one of the Elite Four I am guessing this is probably his sister?
Well no matter, since this has got to be the single easiest gym in the entire game!
Any non-Grass, non-Bug Pokémon can totally wipe these guys off the map, and anything
with Fly can get rid of the Venomoth. Just don't try to use Ground attacks on
Flying-type Crobat - use Electric instead.

NOTE: I can't read the slightest bit of Japanese, so I'm improvising
throughout the game. So I don't know all the names of the towns. Sorry.
This
