This walkthrough assumes you have a basic understanding
of how stuff in the game works. Since I want to keep this
walkthrough relatively short I will skip all the stuff about
controls and items that's already in the instruction manual anyway.
This walkthrough also assumes you have all the items (Pokéfood,
Pester Balls, Pokéflute, etc.) so I don't have to point out a
lot of different strategies. Only strategies for the BEST shots
here.
Pokémon Snap Walkthrough
Level 1 - The Beach
A few of them will fly right out in front of you at the start. You can
get some good close up shots here. However, the best place to get a
shot of Pidgey is near the end, where the two Pidgeys are using their
gust attack against Meowth. Make sure you aim for Pidgey, not Meowth.
Immediately after the first group of Pidgeys, a Doduo will BURST out of
the bushes and run across the screen. Make sure you get a shot of him
as soon as he rushes out, he moves FAST. He will pop up later on but
he won't be as close as he is at the start. If you can hit him with
a Pester Ball he'll get knocked out. Snap this! MEGA pose points.
It's a bit hard to get close without the Dash Engine, though.
Can't miss this one, he's right after the first Doduo. Lure him over to
the surfboard with Pokéfood, and he'll hop onto the surfboard and jump
up and down. Nice shot there. Later, when you get to the area with Scyther, two Pikachus
will run out of the grass when you flush the Scyther out. Play
the Pokéflute when they're standing on the two stumps for a very nice
looking picture that's worth a whopping 6,000 points. Wow!
If you look way out into the ocean near the first Butterfree, you may catch
a glimpse of Lapras. Snap it! Keep scanning the horizon, and make sure
you snap Lapras EVERY TIME IT APPEARS. If everything's cool, then when you
reach Kangaskhan three Lapras will appear VERY close to the coast for a sweet
close up. Big points there.
It's a bit tricky to get a shot of these guys, since they almost ALWAYS have
their backs turned to you. Just wait until they turn around, then snap. Try
to get two of them in one shot!
No way you can miss this one. It's GIGANTIC! Unfortunatley, you can't get a
pic of him while he's asleep. Toss a Pester Ball to make him yawn and scratch
himself, or better yet, play the Pokéflute to make him dance!
Found all over the place, but the best place to get a shot of one is immediately
after the Snorlax. You'll see one on top of a hill. Nail him with a Pester Ball,
then when you turn the corner he'll stand on one foot and give you a mean look. MEGA
points! Afterwards, play a tune on the Pokéflute for a even better pose.
A little ways after the Meowth, you'll pass a grassy area where you'll notice that
the leaves are being disturbed. Try tossing a Pester Ball where the leaves fly up.
If you aim right, a Scyther will fly out. Get a shot of him slashing his arms through
the air. Try to do this EARLY, or else you'll be too far off to get a decent shot.
A little trick that helps get a better shot is to use the Dash Engine and try to run
into the Meowth that's running across the tracks. It sounds cruel, but the 01 will
stop long enough for you to get some nice shots of Scyther and the two Pikachus
that run out when you flush Scyther out.
Only one exists, it's chasing a pink ball around some rocks soon after the Scyther.
When you hit the Chansey, Eevee will start jumping up and down. Snap this! Big
pose points there. You can also play the Pokéflute to make him turn around and
face you for a nice closeup.
Hit the pink ball that Eevee is chasing and it will unroll, revealing a Chansey.
You'll get some nice points if you get a pic of it tossing its egg into the air,
but if you play the Pokéflute you'll get an even better score!
You can't miss this one. Problem is, it's got its back to you. Try hitting it with
a Pester Ball EARLY (if you wait too long, you'll be too far away to get a decent
shot) then snapping it when it's roaring at you. Then play the Pokéflute to make
it dance. Big points there.
If you toss an apple into the water, sometimes this little fish will fly up. Be quick!
It moves FAST.
Every level has a Pokémon sign, which you must snap in order to open up the secret level.
This one's right after the first Pikachu. Take a close look at the strange rocks with
green algae growing on them. Look familiar? That's right, it's "Kingler's Rock"!
Simple enough, just snap 6 species of Pokémon.
Level 2 - Tunnel
There's a few of them at the start. They don't do much but roll around, but if you hit them with an apple
they'll get mad and explode! MEGA points. Try to get other Electrodes in the background of the shot for
big time points!
There's one at the start, chasing an Electrode, but it has its back turned to you. You can get a good pic of
it when it's blasted off its feet by an Electrode, but in order to get a good face shot, nail it with a Pester Ball, use the Dash Engine to
speed in front of it, then look behind you and snap it as it's getting up. Later in the level, you'll see
two Electabuzzes. If the power's not on they won't do a thing, but once you wake Zapdos up you'll be able to
lure them together with apples for a GREAT group shot.
Found all over the place.
There are a few in the first room, but they're too far away to get a decent shot. If you make
one of the nearby Electrodes explode, however, they'll lower down far enough for you to get a
good close up. Don't worry about getting other Kakunas in the shot, just concentrate on getting
one big one.
When the doors open, a Zubat will fly out.
In the room after the Electrodes, you see a big yellow egg. Lure the nearby Pikachu to the
egg using apples, then play the PokéFlute when the Pikachu gets close to the egg. Pikachu's
electric shock will crack the egg, revealing Zapdos! Snap some pics of Zapdos as soon as
it bursts out of the egg, then chose the one that shows a ball of electricity with two
yellow wings sticking out. That's the best possible shot of Zapdos.
After the Zapdos egg, there will be a small pool of water. A Magikarp will leap out as
you pass by.
In some places in the level, you'll see strange purple clouds floating around. If you snap
a pic of them, the viewfinder will say "?", but when the pictures are developed, you'll see
Haunter.
Immediately after the second Haunter, a Diglett will be playing with a Pikachu. Snap the
Diglett as it's trying to go back underground for the best pose points.
If you snap the first Diglett, Pikachu will run to a different spot and another Diglett will
pop out. Snap this Diglett (NOT Pikachu) and Pikachu will run to another spot and another
Diglett will pop out. If you snap this Diglett, then the next spot Pikachu runs to will
have a Dugtrio, not a Diglett. Keep snapping Dugtrio, and eventually you'll get three
Dugtrios on screen at once for a nice group shot.
You can't miss the three Magnemites at the end of the level; however, when you try to
zoom in they start vibrating and won't let you get a good shot of them. Simply toss
some apples to distract them, then snap a pic of them jumping around. Try to get at
least two in the shot.
Lure the three Magnemites together with apples and they'll turn into Magneton.
Easy one; first release Zapdos from its egg, then when you get into the next room,
look at the wall. You'll see a strange shadow on the wall. Snap it, because it's
"Pinsir's Shadow".
Right before the three Magnemites, you'll see a Electrode up on a ledge to the right.
Toss an apple at it from a distance, and if you aim it right, the Electrode will
explode and reveal a secret path.
Level 3 - Volcano
Can't miss them, they're right at the start. A shot of them running is good enough,
but if you want an even better shot, throw some apples. Try to get at least two in
one shot for the best score.
There are three of 'em, one immediately after the Rapidash and two later in the level.
They'll try to run away from you, but toss them some apples and they'll run up to you, stand
on their hind legs and say "Vul!" Try to get a pic of one Vulpix doing that, with the other
two jumping around in the background.
About halfway through the level, your path will be blocked by a giant egg. If you look
to the left, you'll see a couple of Charmanders running around. Throw some apples and
they'll call their friends. Once all six Charmanders are on screen, try to lure them
close to you. You'll get some good group shots that way. The best pose is when they jump into
the air and yell "Char!"
Simple enough; just knock the giant egg into the lava by hitting it with a Pester Ball or
apple. After a few seconds, Moltres will fly out of the lava. Wait until it's directly
above you, then snap a pic of it shaking the lava off its wings for the best pose points.
After the Moltres egg, you'll see two Magmars running around. A good close up shot of
one will get you a few points, but if you REALLY want to rack up the points, try tossing
an apple between them and they'll start fighting over it! You'll get special points
for Fighting Magmar, points for size and technique, points for the pose, and bonus points
for having two Magmars in one shot. I've gotten upwards of 5,000 points for this one!
At the end of the level, a Charmeleon will be running around a lava pit. The best pose
is when it looks upwards and says "Charmeeeeelllleon".
Knock the Charmeleon into the lava pit with an apple or Pester Ball and Charizard will
explode out. For the best pose, hit it with a Pester Ball, then snap it when it breathes
fire all over you. Ouch!
To the right of the Charmeleon, you'll see three lava pits. Toss a Pester Ball into each
one and a Pokémon will jump out. Usually it will be a Growlithe...
...other times it will be the awesome Arcanine.
Somewhere in the level there is a small pool of water... I forget where, I
think it's right after the two Magmars... anyway if you toss a Pester Ball
into the pool, a Magikarp will come out. It doesn't do anything special,
and it's not a very close shot, so it's not really worth it.
It took me a while to figure this one out. Here goes. At the very beginning,
you'll see a volcano to your left. If you toss a Pester Ball into it, a
cloud of purple smoke will come out. Snap this, for it is "Koffing's Kloud".
Snap 20 Pokémon! Could it get any easier?
Level 4 - River
Look to the right at the beginning of the level and you'll see these really
cute tadpole things jumping around in the bushes. Hit them with Pester Balls
and they'll run towards the water. Snap a pic of them running for the best
pose points, and try to get at least two in the same shot. After you do this,
you can toss items into the water throughout the level to make them jump
out again.
Throw some Pester Balls into the water at the beginning and hey, there it
is.
On the opposite site of the river, across from the Poliwags, you'll see
a tree stump with a green thing sticking out of the top. Hit it with
a Pester Ball and Bulbasaur will jump out. Also, toss some apples near
the fallen log and another Bulbasaur will run out. The best pose is when
they do a little flip after you throw them some apples.
After the Bulbasaurs, you'll see a Slowpoke sitting on the riverbank. It
doesn't do anything special, so just get a good up close shot of him as you
pass by.
Lure the Slowpoke over to the Shellder sign with apples, and it will go
fishing with its tail. After a while a Shellder will bite its tail,
and it will become a Slowbro. Make sure you do this from far away so you
can get a good closeup shot.
On the other side of the river, opposite the Slowpoke, you'll see some
weird plant thing spitting smoke into the air. Play the PokéFlute and
Vileplume will jump out. The best pose is when it does backflips in
the air (when you play the 2nd PokéFlute song)
There are four of them hanging from the trees soon after the Slowpoke.
In order to get a good shot, hit the fourth one with a Pester Ball so that
it will lower directly in your path and stop you. Then, turn around and
hit the other three with Pester Balls. You can get some really good
closeup shots here.
You'll see this one right after the Metapod. You can get some good shots
of it swimming around, but if you want to REALLY rake in the points hit
it with an apple. It will sink into the water, then pop out and yell "Psy!"
Snap this! Mega points. You can make it pop up again by tossing apples
into the water.
On the right riverbank near the Psyduck, you'll see some weird things sticking
out of the wall. Try hitting them with Pester Balls, and Porygon will
jump out and yell some word I've never heard before ("Chintzy"?). Throw
it an apple and snap it when it jumps into the air for the best pose points.
They appear at various spots in the level, but it's really hard to get
a good shot of them without the Dash Engine. Try speeding up near the
Bulbasaur, then stop near the Shellder sign and wait for them to jump up.
They randomly appear at the end of the level, and sometimes they don't
appear at all. It's not hard to get a good shot of them though; just
wait until they're facing you and snap away.
It hides in the log at the end of the level. If you snap it, it will run
out of the log at a VERY high speed. Snap this for a special bonus!
Wake up the Vileplume, then snap the tree above it. You couldn't see it
before because of Vileplume's smoke, but now you can really tell it's
"Cubone's Tree".
Near the end you'll see a switch on the riverbank. Hit the thing sticking
out of the wall above it with a Pester Ball. Porygon will jump out
and land on the switch, opening a new level.
Level 5 - Cave
A few will fly by at the beginning. Snap! Snap!
At the start, look into the caverns in the distance and you'll see some
Grimers. They're far away, but be sure you snap both of them. Then, when
you enter the next room of the cave, you'll see a Grimer on a nearby ledge
for some good close up shots.
Once you're done snapping the Grimer, hit it with three Pester Balls and it
will evolve into Muk.
There are three of them up on a ledge near the Muk. Lure them together with
apples for a nice group shot.
Those Bulbasaur sure are strange looking... hit them with Pester Balls and
they'll show their true form.. Ditto! As always, try to lure all three of
them together for a group shot.
After the three Dittos, a Jigglypuff will be chased by a Koffing. Hit the
Koffing with a Pester Ball, and the Jigglypuff will fly away. A little while
later, near the Weepinbell's pool, you'll see another Koffing chasing a
Jigglypuff. Hit the Koffing and the Jigglypuff will fly away again.
At the end of the level, you'll see those Jigglypuffs again - singing on
stage! Be sure to snap this, it's worth big-time bonus points.
You'll see it chasing the Jigglypuffs (see above). For the best pose, play
your PokéFlute. Or, snap its expression when it's hit with a Pester Ball.
Near the second Jigglypuff, a Weepinbell will be flying around a little
pool. Snap a good, up close shot of it as it flaps past.
Knock the Weepinbell into the pool with a Pester Ball, and it will evolve
into the awesome Victreebel! Snap some pics of it as soon as it flies out
(while it's doing backflips in the air) for the best pose points.
Near the Victreebel pool, there's another little pool of water. Throw an
apple into it and sometimes Magikarp will jump out.
You'll see two of them in the water around a giant egg. They won't do
a thing, even if you hit them with Pester Balls or apples. But play the
PokéFlute and they'll start dancing! Snap a good up close pic of one
dancing - if you try to get two in one shot they'll be too small to get
a good size score.
When the Jynx start dancing, they'll rock the egg, and eventually it will
break, revealing Articuno! For the best pose, try to get a good close
up shot of it as soon as it comes out of the egg, with the sparkles flying
off its wings.
This is a lot of work, but it's worth it for the HUGE points you get for
it! Immediately after the Victreebel, a Pikachu will be captured by a
Zubat. Try to hit the Zubat with a Pester Ball before it flies off. If
you hit it, Pikachu will float down on balloons! Snap about 10 pics of
that, it's worth big time points. Next, free the Articuno, then at the
end of the level (near the singing Jigglypuff) look behind you. Articuno
will come flying back, with Pikachu on its back! Snap some pics of this,
it's worth HUUUUUGE special points! Make sure you snap Pikachu, not
Articuno.
At the Victreebel pool look way off into the distance and you'll see
some sparkling gems on the wall. You won't see anything at first,
but when the pictures are developed, you'll see the "Mewtwo Constellation".
Level 6 - Valley
At the very start of the level, you see these brown things sticking out of the water.
Hit them with a Pester Ball and try to knock them onto the shore, where you'll see
that they were actually the shells of Squirtles. Try to lure them together with
apples for a great group shot. The best pose is when they leap into the air and
yell "Squirtle!".
Just throw some items into the water at the start and it'll jump out. This is
probably the best place to get a shot of Magikarp since it comes so close.
The same as Magikarp, only these guys are quicker and harder to get on film.
There are a few of them throughout the level, but they're all too far away
to get a good close up of them. In order to get a good shot, wait until the
end of the level, where you'll see a Mankey on top of a high hill and some
Squirtles at the bottom. Hit one of the Squirtles with a Pester Ball so that
it slides up the hill and nails the Mankey. You have to time it just right.
If you hit the Mankey you'll see it sitting on the shore when you go around
the corner. Snap a good close up!
You'll see them hanging on the walls soon after the first Mankey. Hit them with
Pester Balls to make them fall. Take a pic of them as soon as they land for the
best pose points.
Every time you knock down a Geodude, you'll also scare up a Sandshrew. Toss them
some apples, then snap them jumping up and down. Also, try to get at least two in
one shot.
You'll see a Sandslash soon after the three Geodudes, but it burrows too fast to
get a good shot of it. To make it reappear, knock down the two nearby Geodudes
and the HUGE Graveler will fall down as well. When the Graveler falls, the Sandslash
will pop up to have a looksie. Snap! Snap!
You could get a shot of the Graveler mentioned above, but there's a much better opportunity
later on. Near the waterfall, you'll see three Gravelers hanging from the wall. Play the
PokéFlute and they'll start to dance! This special shot (Graveler Group Dance) is worth
500 special points!
They jump up every once in a while around the whirlpool. You can also make them appear
by throwing items into the water.
Toss 4 Pester Balls into the whirlpool (you'll know you hit if the whirlpool flashes) and
Dragonite will fly out! Take some shots of him when he's directly above you for the
best pose points.
Near the Graveler Group Dance, you'll see a Staryu floating around. Snap it and it'll start
following you. Later you'll two more Staryus. Make sure you snap both of them too. The
best time to take a picture is when they hover directly in front of you for a very brief
moment after you snap them. It's tough to get a good shot of these guys since they move
so fast, but keep at it! It also helps to get the other Staryus in the background.
This is extremely hard! When you snap a Staryu, it'll start spinning around you VERY
quickly. When you reach the whirlpool, any Staryu that's following you will leap into
the pool then reappear as a Starmie! They fly away VERY quickly, so start snapping as soon
as they burst out of the whirlpool. It's almost impossible to get a good shot of these
guys, so don't worry if your first few shots don't look all that great. This is probably
the single hardest Pokémon in the game to get on film :(
This one's a bit tricky. At the start of the level, you'll see a Magikarp hopping around
in the distance. Try to hit it with a Pester Ball before it stops jumping (the aim is
tricky and will require a bit of practice) and it'll be knocked over to the Mankey,
who will toss the little fish far, far away. Later in the level (at the Graveler Group
Dance to be exact) the Magikarp will land on the shore next to you. Nail it with another
Pester Ball and it'll flop over to the waterfall, where it will transform into Gyarados!
Try tossing a Pester Ball at it, then snapping it when it sprays water all over you.
Could this one be any easier? It's directly in front of you at the beginning, takes up
half the screen, and on top of that, Prof. Oak even tells you where to get it! So there's
no excuse for you to miss "Mt. Dugtrio"!
When you knock the Mankey off the cliff (see above), hit it with another Pester Ball to make
it fall back onto the switch. It'll open up Prof. Oak's secret spot! Oak will send you
out after the six Pokémon signs. Snap those and you're off to the secret level!
Level 7 - Rainbow Cloud
Mew will come flying at you inside of her blue bubble shield! Nail it with a Pester Ball
three times, then Mew will switch to the Yellow version. Hit this 3 times, then Mew will
fly by you on one side (there's a pattern somewhat) chasing after the bubble. Bean her
with a Pester Ball and she'll spin around and face you. Snap this! Mega points. Keep
repeating this over and over till you get the perfect Mew shot! I've gotten upwards of
9,000 points for this (!).
The end... or is it?
Now that you've snapped every Pokémon, what do you do? Go back and try to beat the challenge
scores! Here are some hints:
1. Try to take at least one picture of EVERY Pokémon in a level.
2. If you set up a good special shot (like the Pikachu on a Stump) take at least 10 shots of it. It'll help you out tremendously!
3. Don't waste film on lame shots.
4. Try to use up as much film as possible. If you leave the level with less than 10 shots remaining, that's a good sign.
