Pokémon Red/Blue Walkthrough
Welcome to the walkthrough section! This is a walkthrough for Pokémon Red, Blue and Yellow on the Gameboy. If you see anything wrong with this walkthrough, PLEASE Email me and tell me.
PS Throughout this walkthrough I will refer to the "Boss Section". To see this section, click here.
PPS This walkthrough covers all three versions of the game, so most of the info here will be for all three versions. However, there are some things that are only in Yellow, so these parts are in yellow text and have this icon next to them. Okay? Okay.
---Pallet Town---
It starts...
Okay, after you chose a name for yourself and your rival, the first thing
you should do is go to the PC in the first room and get the Potion- you'll
need it! Now, leave the building and explore the town a bit, and when
youure done, leave through the top exit. Prof. Oak will stop you and
drag you back to his lab, where he lets you chose a Pokémon to take with
you when you leave.
You can pick your Pokémon, you can pick your nose, but...
You can only take one and I highly recommend that you take Bulbasaur;
Charmander sucks and Squirtle is only okay. After that, your rival
will take a Pokémon. As you leave he will challenge you to a fight.
This is where that Potion really comes in handy! If you beat him,
hooray!; if not, don't worry, soon you'll be kicking butt all over
the place. Now, leave the town throught he north.
Pikachu chooses you
Yellow players won't have a choice of Pokémon - they'll automatically get Pikachu. Not that that's a bad thing - Pikachu's lightning speed and powerful Electric abilities will make him one of the most powerful early Pokémon in the game. Unfortunately, he won't ever evolve, so he's really only useful early in the game.
---Route 1---
When Pokémon Attack!
You can't catch the Pidgeys and Rattatas just yet, so let your first
Pokémon fight and raise its levels. Talk to all the people here for
some advice and a free potion.
---Viridian City---
Goin' to town
This is your first real town, complete with PokéCenter and Shop.
In fact, the Shop should be your first destination here. The cleck
will give you a package to take to Prof. Oak. Go back and give it to
him, and you'll get a nice new PokéDex in return. Neat. Visit your
Rivals house and talk to his sister for a Map. Now, back to Viridian
City. As always, explore the town and talk to people. You can't get
into the gym just yet - you won't be able to until muuuuch later. Be
sure to stop at the PokéCenter and get healed.
Catch some Pokémon
Also, if you revisit the Shop, you'll find that they're now open for
business and selling, among other things, PokéBalls for 200 bucks a
pop. Big ripoff right? Get used to ripoffs, the shop owners seem to
have a monopoly in this game. Anyway, buy a few for the road (about
5 or so should do it for now) then continue north to the Viridian
Forest. It's time to start catching Pokémon!
---Viridian Forest---
Pika pika pika!
Attention all Pikachu fans! The Viridian Forest is home to everyone's
favorite yellow mouse (only in the Red and Blue versions), plus Caterpie, Weedle, Metapod, and Kakuna.
Pikachus are EXTREMELY rare and can only be found in one other place in
the game, plus they can be very powerful if you get one early on (I don't
care what anyone else says. Pikachu ROCKS!!!), so
GET ONE!!!
Ya tryin' to bug me?
You'll also fight your first trainer battles here- they're
all Bug Catchers, and as you might expect they have Bug types. Use
a Flying type for best results (Pidgey is OK, but Spearow is better -
oops, I forgot, you can go west from Viridian to get to a place where
you can catch Spearows and Nidorans [plus Mankey in the Yellow version]. Cool!)
Havin' a ball
See those things that look like PokéBalls? They're items, and here
you'll find a Potion, an Antidote (comes in handy against all those Bug
Catchers) and a PokéBall.
---Pewter City---
Town stuff
Some cool stuff to check out here - visit the Pokémon Museum at the
north end for some useless, but interesting, info on rare Pokémon.
As always, get your Pokémon healed and buy what you need to get
at the Shop. And, as always, talk to everyone you meet.
Brock 3:16
I guess I forgot to mention...this is the home to your first Gym!
In here you'll meet Brock, who raises Rock Pokémon (Geodude, Onix)
See the Boss section for more details!
---Route 3---
Jiggly! Jiggly Jigglypuff puff!!
Trainers EVERYWHERE!!! They can get pretty tough, so don't be afraid
to retreat to the PokéCenter every now and then if need be. At
the end you'll find some grassy areas where you can get Pidgeys,
Spearows, and the incredibly rare Jigglypuff, who doesn't appear at
any other place in the game! Unfortunately, Yellow players will have to settle for a Sandshrew... but don't worry, you can get Jigglypuff later on!
Alright kids, can you say, "ripoff?"
There's also a PokéCenter, so stop in. Talk to everyone you meet-
you'll get some information, and some people will even try to sell
you stuff, although they're not always fair buys. Here's a great
deal- pay 500 bucks for a lame Magikarp you can get a little later
on for free! I'll pass.
---Mt. Moon---
Clefairies and Zubats and Geodudes. Oh my!
The first cave level and its a lot harder than any other area you've
explored - there seems to be a lot more wild Pokémon running around
plus the trainers are pretty tough. Speaking of wild Pokémon, here
you'll find Zubats, Geodudes, Paras, and Clefairy. If you remembered
to get a Jigglypuff back on route 3, you can use its Sing ability to
put hard-to-catch Pokémon to sleep; this makes it much easier to
catch 'em! As for items, you can get two TMs, two Potions, an Escape
Rope, a Moon Stone, a Rare Candy, and an HP up.
To protect the world from... oh never mind.
You'll meet Team Rocket for the first time here, and they're pretty
tough. Take a few Antidotes, cause these guys like Poison types
(Ekans, Koffing...but no Meowth (long sigh.....) ) They also have
Ratattas and Raticates.
Jurassic Poké
At the end of this level, you'll have a choice of two fossils. Pick
wisely; whichever fossil you get affects which of two rare Pokémon
you get! Now, leave the cave (I didn't have to tell you that...)
Double Trouble
If you're playing Yellow, however, you'll face one more challenge before you can exit the cave. As you're leaving, you'll be stopped by someone... Jessie and James! These guys are a pain. They've got their trademark trio of Pokémon (Meowth, Koffing and Ekans) and believe it or not, they actually put up a pretty good fight. Ever been poisoned, and caught by Ekans' Wrap at the same time? MAN does that hurt! I'd recommend using Butterfree's Confusion against the Ekans and Koffing, and Nidoran's Double Kick against the Meowth (I used Mankey but Nidoran is better). Once Team Rocket's blasted off again, you're finally out of this cave!
---Route 4---
Insert funny comment here
Not much to do here - just lots of empty space and ledges.
Grab the PokéBall nearby (it's TM04), then continue east. Once
you jump down those ledges, you won't be able to get back to Mt.
Moon this way, so make sure you're done exploring the cave before
you leave! In the grass here you'll find Spearow, Rattata, and
either Sandshrew (blue version) or Ekans (red version).
---Cerulean City---
All wet
While I don't recommend that you immediately run into the gym as
soon as you get to the city, you can go ahead and do it now if
you want. The leader, Misty, has water types. Refer to the Boss
section for more strategies!
Jynxed!
Later in the game, when you've got a Poliwhirl, you can trade it
for a Jynx in this town.
Bulba! Bulbasaur!
Yellow players won't get the Jynx, but they'll get something far cooler in what used to be the trading post... a Bulbasaur! However, you can only get it if your Pikachu is extremely happy and healthy. If he jumps up and down when you talk to him, that's a good sign. Also, you have to have Charmander and Squirtle first.
Hot Wheels
There's a bike shop here, but man, look at those prices! 1,000,000P
for a bike, yeah right! Don't worry - later you can get one for free.
Not again!!
Anyway, if you try to exit through the north, you'll face your rival
again. Watch out- he's getting a lot tougher! After he's gone, go
north and you'll fight five trainers in a row. You'll have time to go
back to the PokeCenter between fights, so go ahead and recharge if
you want.
Abrakadabra!
At the top, you'll find a guy who gives you a Nugget for
beating all the trainers, but... he gets pretty mad about you not
wanting to join Team Rocket, so you've got to fight him. So
what do you do with the Nugget? The only use I've found for it
is to sell it for 5000P at a Shop. Anyway, there's some grass here,
and you'll find Pidgeys, Caterpies (blue), Weedles (Red), Metapods
(blue), Kakunas (red), Bellsprouts (blue), Oddishes (red), and Abras.
This is the only place you can get Abra, so make sure you get one.
They're useless, but if you can get one to level 16, it turns into
Kadabra, which is really powerful. Neatness!
Char!
If you're lucky enough to be playing Yellow, you'll find a man standing on the hill a little north of the bridge. Talk to him and he'll give you a Pokémon - a Charmander! Be sure to put it on your team - it'll be a big help versus Bug and Grass Pokémon.
Trainer-rama
Whatever you do, go to the right and you'll pass through an area
with a TON of Trainers (this is the absolute last time I'll say
this. If you get hurt really bad, go to the PokéCenter.) Near the
end there's a PokéBall surrounded by trees, and there's some guy
standing in the only way to get to it. How do you get it? Walk
in front of the guy so that when he sees you, he walks towards you
and away from the opening. Then when the battle's done, simply slip
behind him and grab the PokéBall! Pretty sneaky, eh?
PokéManiac? Oh, I get it!! Hahaha!
At the far right, you'll find a cottage. This is the home of Bill,
the PokéManiac that everyone in town's been yapping about. Go
in and you'll find that what they were saying is true- Bill truly
is a PokéManiac; in fact, he's been turned into a Pokémon! Help him
out, and when he's back to normal, talk to him (you might have to leave
the house then go back in for this part; I don't remember) and he'll
give you the S.S. Ticket. Also, check out the PC, it has info on rare
Pokémon (Eevee and its evolutions).
Breaking and entering
After you'll talked to Bill, go back to Cerulean. Remember that
house that was guarded by the policeman? He's gone now, allowing you
to go into the house and slip out the back way. In the back yard,
you'll meet a Team Rocket member- beat him up to get TM 28 (I think -
bad memory) Now, go south 'til you reach Route 5.
---Route 5---
For lazy people
There's a Pokémon day care center here. You can leave a Pokémon here
for a while and it will gain levels while you're away. It costs money
depending on how much experience it recieves, and it does take a while
for it to gain a lot of levels. But it does save a lot of time running
around trying to raise levels the old fashioned way, so you might want
to give it a try.
Meowth, that's right!
In the tall grass here you'll find Pidgeys, Bellsprouts (blue),
Oddishes (red), Mankeys (red), Jigglypuff (yellow), Pidgeotto (yellow), and for all you Team Rocket fans out
there, Meowths (blue). At the south end you'll find a guarded gate
house- you can't get through it yet, so DON'T TRY TO!! Go into
the nearby Underground Tunnel, which takes you to Route 6. This
has basically the same Pokémon as route 5, except there's trainers
here. (if you're playing Yellow, come back to Rt. 6 once you have Surf, then swim around in the small pool - you'll get a Psyduck! Psy-yi-yi!) Be careful- one's got a very powerful level 20 Butterfree.
Keep going south, and you'll reach...
---Vermilion City---
So near, yet so Farfetch'd
Yes, I stole that from the Pokémon TV show... so sue me! Anyway, if you're playing Red and Blue, this
girl will trade a very rare Farfetch'd for a
very common Spearow. Surely you've gotten one of THOSE by now. If you're playing Yellow, don't worry - you'll have a chance to snag a wild Farfetch'd later on.
Go fish
In another house, you'll meet the Fishing Guru, who will give
you the Old Rod. The only thing you can catch with it are useless
Magikarps, but hey, another Pokémon for the PokéDex. Besides, if
you can get Magikarp up to level 20, he turns into the very cool
and powerful Gyarados, who is one of the strongest Pokémon
in the game.
Join the club!
Check out the Pokémon fan club where the president will give you
a Bike Voucher. You can redeem this at the bike shop in Cerulean to
get a free bike (and you were gonna pay full price!) Once you've got
your spiffy new bike, ride it back to Vermilion, and head for Vermilion
Harbor. Show the S.S. Ticket to the guy and he'll let you pass -
welcome aboard!
---S.S. Anne---
Holy Ship!
It's no Titanic, but the S.S. Anne is pretty big (that's funny - it was
called St. Anne on the show...), so there's plenty
of stuff to check out! And you want to make sure you explore it all-
once you've completed this area you can never return!! You can leave,
however, and go to the PokéCenter if you like, just as long as you
haven't spoken to the Captain yet. Check out all the rooms - some
people will fight you, some will give you stuff, and some will just
talk to you. In the kitchen, check out the trash cans; there's a
Great Ball in one of them.
Fight your rival.... again....
After a bit of exploring, you'll run into your rival once again. Look
out, he's getting tougher! But you still should be able to beat him
easily. After he's beat, walk behind him to find a staircase, which
goes to the captain's room. Turns out he's a little bit seasick, so
help him out! In return, you'll get HM01, which teaches Cut - now
you have the ability to chop through those little twigs! Now, leave
the ship, and it'll leave. Then, return to Vermilion City.
---Vermilion City 2---
Pokémon and stuff
Drop by Diglett's Cave and grab a Diglett - you'll need one! You
could check out Rt. 11 to the east, but with Snorlax's huge butt
blocking your path, you've got no choice but to turn back. You
can however get a nice Drowzee here (which evolves into the VERY
powerful Hypno, one of my fave Pokémon in the game), so it's not
such a bad idea to check it out.
Locked up
Anyway, what you want to do now is chop down the tree blocking
the Vermilion Gym. Go in, and you'll find that Lt. Surge has
locked himself up. The only way to get to him is to find and
activate the two electric switches that control the doors. Easier
said than done! Finding the first is easy-just randomly check out
garbage cans until you find it - but the second is tougher. It's
always right next to the first one, but if you guess wrong the
switches reset, and you'll have to start over. Bummer!
Shocking!
When you do unlock the door, you'll fight Lt. Surge and his
Electric buddies. See the Boss section for more details.
Squir-tell?
If you're playing Yellow, talk to Officer Jenny in Vermilion City after you've won the Thunder Badge and she'll give you a Squirtle! If you've got Charmander, and your Pikachu is very happy with you, you can now go get that Bulbasaur!
Dig it!
Now that you've got Cut, head through Diglett's cave. When you come
out, you might recognize where you are... Route 2!!! Use the Cut
ability to chop through the trees, and in one of those previously
inaccessable houses, you'll meet Prof. Oaks aide. Talk to him, and
if you've gotten at least 10 types of Pokémon (and surely you've gotten THAT many by now) you'll get
the Flash HM! Neat.
Jurassic Poké, Part 2
Now, head to Pewter City. Remember how the back door to the museum
was blocked off by a tree? Weeeeelll, now you can chop right through
it. Go in the back door and talk to all the people, one guy will give
you Old Amber. Gee, um...thanks! Turns out that Amber will be important
later on. Now, back through Diglett's cave and to Cerulean City!
---Route 9---
Stuff
Now that you've got Cut, you can chop down the tree that's blocking
Route 9. It's to the east of the town. You'll find lots of trainers,
one new Pokémon type (Voltorb) in Red and Blue (Yellow players can grab a Machop and a Magnemite) and at the end, a PokéCenter and cave
entrance. Go through the cave to reach...
---Rock Tunnel---
Are you afraid of the dark?
It's too dark to see! Use FLASH to light up this area so you can get
around. As for Pokémon, you'll find Machop, Geodude, Zubat, and Onix
(very cool!) This area's pretty straight-forward, so I won't go into
too much detail. Don't be afraid to retreat to the PokéCenter every
now and then - use Diglett's Dig move to get out quickly. And don't
worry about finding items - there aren't any.
---Lavender Town---
That white hand on your shoulder, it isn't real...
Ignore Pokémon Tower for now. You can't beat it without an item
you'll get later on.
Great Balls (oh stop laughing, you know what I mean...)
Buy a few. They're more accurate than the old PokéBalls you've been
getting.
The name game!
There's a guy here who will rename your Pokémon if you want him to.
Useful if the Nidoran you named Bob turns out to be female...
---Route 8---
Stuff 2 do
Not much here. Just lots of trainers and grass. In the grass, you can
find new Pokémon: Vulpix (blue version) or Growlithe (red). There's
another of those gate house thingies, but again, you can't pass it.
Just use the underground path. You'll come out right outside...
---Celadon City---
Flower Power
Another town, another Gym. Erika, the leader here, raises Grass
Pokémon. See the Boss Strategy section for more info.
Eevee meevee!
Enter the Celadon Mansion from the back and go up the stairs. At the
top there's a guy who tells you stuff about trading and battling.
But the real prize is the PokéBall on the table. It has a level
25 Eevee. Sweet!
Shopping spree
Celadon City boasts the LARGEST PokéMart you'll ever see: six floors
of shoppin' madness! Floor 2 has lots of useful TMs for sale.
You can get fire, water, thunder and leaf stones on the fourth
floor. Floor 5 offers performance boosting drugs for your Pokémon
(luckly there's no testing before matches :D). Finally, on the
top floor, grab a drink for that Saffron City gate keeper - plus
a few Lemonades for the road.
Lots o' slots
In order to play the Slot Machines at the Game Corner, ya gotta get
a Coin Case. You can get one by talking to the guy in the diner.
Once you've got it, walk around the Game Corner and press A to
find coins lying around. Usually you'll get about 10 or 20 coins
at a time, but one time I found a whopping 100 coins!! Talk to
people, you'll get coins from them too. Winning at the slots is
tough, so save after you win big. What's the point to this?
Weeellll, there's an extra-special Pokémon, Porygon, that can
only be gotten by winning it at the slots. Expensive? You
betcha - Porygon costs 6500 coins in the Blue version and
9999 coins in the red! But be patient, you'll get it eventually...
Poster boy
While you're playing around in the Game Corner, you'll probably
notice a Team Rocket member staring at a poster in back of the room.
So what, you say. Well, if you've been looking around town, you
might have heard someone mention a secret switch in the game corner.
Fight the Rocket and he'll move, then examine the poster. A hidden
passage will appear! Go down it, and you'll be in...
---Game Corner Basement---
Rock 'em Sock 'em Rockets
Aha! So this is where TR's been hiding out! There sure are a lot
of 'em down here. You'll notice that there are locked doors here.
To open 'em, you must defeat all the Team Rocket members on that
floor.
Slippin' and slidin'
See those direction arrow thingies on the floor? When you step on
them, you'll slide in that direction til you hit one of those
squares that have four squares on them. You should pretty much
be able to figure this out on your own.
Gimme a lift, would ya?
YOu'll notice that the elevators aren't working - they need a key.
Where do you get the key, you ask? Check the lowest basement
level (there are 4 levels). Fight the Rocket in the upper-left
corner of this floor. After beating him, talk to him again and
the lift key will appear beside him. Pick it up, and now you
can use the elevators!
Team Rocket's blasting off again!
Yellow players will have another quick battle with Jessie and James on the bottom floor. Their Poison-tyep Pokémon are tough, but if you've got a good strong Psychic type (like Kadabra or Hypno) you should be able to take them out easily (Kind of a disappointment, since they were harder than heck to beat back in Mt. Moon).
Call me mister
If you ride the elevator to the lowest level, you'll meet Giovanni,
the boss of Team Rocket! He has Ground Pokémon, so you'd be wise
to bring along some Grass or Water types. He's easy to beat, though.
Beat him and you'll get the Silph Scope! Now, back to Lavender Town!
---Lavender Town, part deux---
Ghost with the most
Now that you have the Silph Scope, you can identify the ghosts
haunting the tower! You'll find Gastly, Cubone, and (VERY RARE!!!)
Haunter running around here. All the trainers here are Channelers,
who have Ghost types. Psychic attacks work well.
Again....
Guess who's on the second floor? Yup, your rival once again! Careful,
he's tough. If he doesn't have Blastoise, he'll have an extremely
powerful Gyarados, so WATCH IT!!!
White Magic
On the 5th floor, you'll notice that some of the floor tiles look
strange. Step onto these tiles and...wowee! You'll be healed!
A flute to toot
On the top floor, you'll meet three Rocket guys (Yellow players get another visit from Jessie and James, who now have Arbok and Weezing!). Beat them all, then
talk to Mr. Fuji and you'll be warped back to his house (hey! How'd
he do that?) and given a PokéFlute. This handy-dandy little item
will wake up any sleeping Pokémon. No more Awakenings, whoopdeedoo!
---Saffron City---
Gimme a drink
Remember that guard who said he was thirsty? Give him one of the
drinks from the giant PokéMart in Celadon and he'll let you past!
Like TR's crack security is going to let you just walk in
Once you're in Saffron City, you'll notice something. All the houses
in town are blocked off by nasty Team Rocket guys. You
can't get into the Gym yet. However, the PokéCenter and Mart are
open, and there's one house where, if you talk to the dude inside,
you'll get a Psychic TM. Neat-o.
Kung-fu fightin'
There's not much to do just yet, but if you want to there is some butt
to be kicked. Check out the Fighting Dojo, where you'll face the
Karate Master and his Fighting-type Pokémon. Psychic types work
great, I recommend Hypno. After you beat him, you'll have a choice
of two Pokémon: Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan (Lee? Chan? Oh, I get it!
Hahahahah!) I chose Hitmonchan, so I don't really know what Hitmonlee's
like. Hitmonchan's pretty cool, though, so pick him if you want.
Asleep on the job
If you had come into this town earlier, you'd have found that the
large Silph Co. building was blocked off. Now that you've beaten
Pokémon Tower, the guard has dozed off! Now you can get in!
---Silph Co.---
The quick and dirty path
This level is nasty. So, after hours of wandering around and mapping
it out, I have finally found a way to zip through the level, grab the
Master Ball, and get the heck outta there! First, take the elevator
to the fifth floor. Go to the left and there should be a scientist
and, below him, a tunnel going south. Go down it, fight the Team Rocket
guy, then go to the right and pick up the Card Key. Now, go into the
elevator and go to the third floor. Go down the hall that goes south.
There should be a Team Rocket guy, and to the left of him a locked door.
Open the door with the Card Key, and step into the transporter (diamond-
shaped floor tile thingie) You will be in a room where you have to fight
your rival. After beating him, talk to the other guy to get a Lapras,
then instead of going into the next transporter go back the way you came
and go to the ninth floor. Go down the hall to the left and unlock the
door on the left. Talk to the lady in this room and all your Pokémon
will be healed. Then go back to the third floor and go through the
transporter again, then go through the other transporter in the room
where your rival was. Go down, fight the last Team Rocket guy (Yellow players just get a pathetically easy last battle with Jessie and James), unlock
the door, and go into the room to fight Giovanni. After beating him,
talk to the company president to get the Master Ball! There's only
one, so save it to use on Mewtwo!
---Saffron City, Part Dos---
New and improved
Once you beat Team Rocket in the Silph Co., you will never have to
fight them again (scattered applause). And now that they're gone,
the town is starting to look a whole lot nicer. You can go in
the houses and visit people (one girl, Copycat, will give you
a TM if you give her a Poké Doll) and now you can go in the gym!
Who all hates transporters? ME!
The transporters in the gym get really confusing so here's a guide.
Step into the one at the entrance. In the next room, take the upper
left one. Then in the next room, take the lower left one. In the
next room, take the lower left one. You're now at Sabrina!
Psyched
Sabrina, the leader of Saffron Gym, raises Psychic Pokémon. See
the Boss section for more details.
---The Road to Fuchsia---
Take yer pick
Now, there are two ways to get to Fuchsia city. One is to go
south of Lavender Town and follow this path. You can get a
Super Rod if you talk to the guy in one of the houses along the
way. The quicker, shorter way is simply to take Cycling Road
to the west of Celadon City.
New Thingies
If you take the long way around (south of Lavender) you'll face
lots of trainers, find two items (one you can get, one you can't)
and face these Pokémon: Venonat, Pidgey, Oddish (red), Bellsprout
(blue), Gloom (red), Weepinbell (blue), Farfetch'd (yellow), Pidgeotto, and Ditto.
High flyin'
If you go on Cycling Road, be sure to chop down the tree at
the start. Go through the house, and on the other side, talk
to the girl in the cottage. You'll get HM02, Fly. Use it
now and you'll be able to warp to any town you've already
visited... VERY handy. Also, check out the grass to find
Rattata, Raticate, Doduo, Spearow, Farfetch'd (yellow) and Ponyta (yellow).
Stupid lazy Pokémon
Either way you go, you'll run into Snorlax. He's at level 30, and
you want to make sure you get one. My strategy is to use the
Pokémon you got from the Fighting Dojo (either Hitmonlee or
Hitmonchan), wait til Snorlax uses Rest, then get his health
down as low as it will go without killing him. Then toss
a Great Ball or two, and he's yours.
---Fuchsia City---
Behold! It's Passion Pink!
Whichever path you take, you'll eventually find yourself here, the
last city you'll visit on land. There's a sort of "Poké-Zoo" here;
check out the signs for info on rare Pokémon. And of course, a
PokéCenter and Mart. The Mart is especially interesting, though,
because they've got the super-powerful Ultra Balls for sale!
Buy a few, then go out and grab some Pokémon! (For starters, why not try fishing in the pool behind the Warden's house? You can get Goldeen, Poliwag, Krabby, Magikarp, and if you're lucky enough to be playing Yellow, you might even find a wild Gyarados!)
Pollution control
The gym leader, Koga, has Poison Pokémon. See the Boss section for
more details!
---Safari Zone---
Safari Party
The coolest thing about Fuchsia City is the Safari Zone at the north
end. Here you can catch rare Pokémon, although it's hard to do -
you must first throw bait, then a rock, then a ball. Some Pokémon
are harder to catch than others, so keep trying. You can catch
Exeggcute, Venonat, Venomoth, Paras, Parasect, Doduo, Nidoran (m & f),
Nidorina, Nidorino, Chansey (I've only seen it once), Scyther (red),
Pinsir (blue), Tangela (yellow), Cubone (yellow), Tauros, and Kangaskhan. If you fish, you'll get Psyduck, Slowpoke, Krabby, Dratini, and if you're playing Yellow, you may even hook a Dragonair!
Anyone seen my teeth?
In addition to rare Pokémon, you can find two real goodies here.
If you can make it all the way to the end before time runs out
(it's not really time, just a counter of how many steps you've
taken) you'll be given HM03, Surf! Now, assuming you've beaten
Koga, you can finally swim! WHOOHOO! If you look around the
house where you get HM03, you'll find a PokéBall that contains
Gold Teeth. Take 'em to the Warden in Fuchsia city and you'll
get HM04, which is Strength - why not try it out on that big
rock in his house?
---Power Plant---
Plug it in. Plug it in.
We could go on to Cinnabar Island, but first let's stop a second and check out a place you couldn't go before. Remember that stream leading south from Rock Tunnel? Well now that you can swim you can go down it and reach a semi-secret dungeon, the Power Plant! Inside you'll find rare Pokémon and lots of items, but beware - some of those things that look like item balls are really Voltorbs!
Thunderbird
After a while, you'll run across the first legendary Pokémon, Zapdos! This bird is a tough catch. He knows Drill Peck and Thundershock, plus Ground type moves are useless against him, so use a strong Pokémon that's resistant to Electic and Flying. Golem is a great choice. Get his health down as low as you can get it, then put him to sleep and toss a few Ultra Balls his way. Once you get him, put him in your party pronto! He makes Pikachu look like a 9-volt battery.
---Sea Route 19---
Surfin' USA
Now that you've got Surf, you can go through Sea Route 19, south
of Fuschia City. There's lots of trainers here, but they don't
give up much money, so don't fight them unless you really suck
and need the experience. While surfing, you'll come across
wild Tentacools. If you fish here, using the Super Rod, you'll
get Staryu, Horsea, Goldeen, and others.
---Seafoam Island---
Island Stylin'
Seafoam is the first really tough cave level in the game. It's
easy to get lost, and the wandering Pokémon can get tough. You'll
find Zubat, Golbat, Seel, Dewgong, Psyduck, Golduck, Krabby,
Kingler, Slowpoke, and others. And don't worry about finding
items - there aren't any.
Rock and roll
Yes, that was corny, but I'm really running out of names... anyway the
objective here is to push the rocks into the black holes to
make the current slower. This way you can surf out of the
cave. This is pretty simple, so I won't go into too much
detail, but there's an annoying little rock puzzle on the
fourth floor that you might have trouble with. Here's what
ya do... First, move the rock on the upper left to the left
a couple spaces. Next push the rock on the right (of the
pair to the right) up as far as it'll go, then move the
left rock down one space. Now push that same rock left til
it's just above the hole and finally put both rocks down the
holes and jump on after them. Easy, eh?
Articunoh-no!
Okay, so that was REALLY corny...You'll meet Articuno, the
second of the three legendary Pokémon,
here. He's at level 50 (!) and VERY powerful so be careful...
Use a Fire-type, like Arcanine or Flareon, or an Electric type such as Electabuzz or Raichu to get his health
as low as it will go, then use an attack to put Pokémon to sleep
(Hypno's Hypnosis and Parasect's Spore are two of the better ones, so try those out first) then toss a few Ultra Balls and he's yours. Congratulations, you've
captured one of the most powerful Pokémon in the game!
---Cinnabar Island---
Back on dry land
Anyway, when you get out of Seafoam, you'll eventually find yourself
here. As usual, do your town stuff, talk to people, visit the
PokéCenter and buy supplies.
Jurassic Poké - the conclusion
Here's where that Fossil and Old Amber come into play. In the Pokémon
lab there's a scientist who's looking for fossils. Give him the Fossil
and the Amber, then come back later for some rare prehistoric Pokémon!
Lockdown
You can't get into the Gym, it's locked! Where is the key? It's in Pokémon mansion, the large house at the northwest of town. You've got no choice but to go in and look for the key.
Switch it on!
There are lots of locked doors in the mansion, but you can open them easily using hidden switches. Where are the switches? In the statues! When you hit one, the locked doors will open and the unlocked doors will close.
Mew who?
As you wander around the mansion, you'll find open books on the tables. Read them to get a little info about the experiments that went on here. Apparently the scientists created a Pokémon that was too powerful to control. It eventually went wild and escaped! (these words stolen from: Nintendo Power vol. 116, January '99)
Jump!
The Secret Key is hidden in the basement, but how do you get down there? Simple - jump! On the 3rd floor, hit the switch, then fall of the left of the two ledges at the bottom of the floor. You'll end up near a staircase - take it, and you'll end up in the basement, where it should be no problem to nab the Secret Key. Nifty shortcut, eh?
All Fired Up!
Now that you've got the key, you can get into Blaine's gym! Refer to the boss section for hints.
---Viridian City Revisited---
What a long, strange trip it's been...
Surf north from Cinnibar Island and you'll reach... Pallet Town! Say hi to Mom and Prof. Oak if you like, then continue north to Viridian City!
The last badge
You didn't forget about the very first gym in the game, did you? Now that you've earned the first seven badges, you can go in! Inside you'll find an old "friend" waiting for you... Giovanni! Trample his Rock/Ground team and win the final badge!
---The Path to the Pokémon League---
Yet another rival battle
Head west from Viridian City to get to Pokémon League HQ. Here you'll face your rival for the last time... (or is it?)
Get past the guards
If you've gotten all the badges, the guards here won't have any trouble with letting you pass. Now, you can finally continue onto Victory Road!
---Victory Road---
Cave crave
The last dungeon and it's a lot harder than what you're used to... the trick here is to flip the switches by pushing rocks over them, so make sure you've got a Pokémon with Strength. The wandering Pokémon and trainers can get pretty tough, and it's a long walk back to a PokéCenter, so be sure to pack plenty of potions and power-ups (too many p's!). But hang in there - this is the LAST cave and there's a PokéCenter and Mart right on the other side.
Flamin' Hot
Victory Road is also home to the last legendary Pokémon, Moltres! Be sure to weaken him in every way and try to put him to sleep before capture - he won't go down easy. I recommend using Gyarados to fight him. I used Blastoise but Gyarados is better. Be sure to save before going into battle, so if you mess up and make him faint you can start over again!
---Indigo Plateau---
The Ultimate Test
You've made it! Now it's time to face the Elite Four, the greatest trainers in the world! If you can beat them, you'll be Pokémon League champion! Refer to the Boss section for more details.
The end..... or is it?
Congratulations! You're now the ultimate Pokémon trainer! But... you said you wouldn't be completely satisfied until you found all the Pokémon, didn't you? DIDN'T YOU?!?! Then you're not done yet - on to Cerulean City!
---Unknown Dungeon---
For experts only
Remember that guy who was blocking the entrance to the cave outside of Cerulean? He's gone now, leaving the mysterious cave open for exploration! Grab your Master Ball and your strongest Pokémon - it's time to get some Pokémon!
Who do Mewtwo? You do.
This final dungeon isn't named anywhere, but according to the instruction manual it's the Unknown Dungeon. Oh well. Your mission here is to find and capture Mewtwo, the Pokémon that escaped from Cinnibar Island. There's a pretty complicated maze in here, but you should be able to figure it out on your own. Once you get to the basement, Surf to the small island in the corner to face Mewtwo! He's at level 70 and VERY powerful so make sure to use your Master Ball (you didn't use it somewhere else, did you? There are tales of trainers catching him with less...)
The end for real this time
Now that you're a master trainer the world is your Cloyster! You can spend your time playing at the Game Corner, leveling up your team, fishing for Pokémon, exploring the Safari Zone, and trading and battling with friends for those last few rare Pokémon.
Happy Hunting!!
