“Greetings y’all and welcome all you foreigners from other nations.” I must apologize to all of my adoring fans for my brief hiatus. Never fear, the spy has returned and is ready to satisfy your long anticipated gossip craving. So here it is the inside news or as Paul Harvey would put it, “the rest of the story.” It’s been well over a year since the last time I have written and that means that I’m bringing more to the table. Bandytown is just oozing with juicy gossip, hearsay and inside news. It’s hard to really begin to find a place to start. Bandytown has came a long way since my last issue of the inside news. Some things have changed while others have remained “same ol’ same ol’.”
The Bandytown.com sign at the beginning of town was destroyed after it was hit by several large trucks hauling mining equipment through town. The sign was ripped off the pole and each time it was placed back on the pole it was just ripped off again. The Bandytown Unincorporated has seen some damage of its own, but not from large trucks. The sign rather was painted on by disrespectful vandals. The sign’s neighbor, the neighborhood crime watch sign was also “violated.” Dedicated Bandytowners took cleaning solvents and rags to the signs and cleaned them and restored them back to normal while the vandals sit in the windows of their home and watched. The vandals were informed that was destroying state property and they could be prosecuted if they do it again. Needless to say, none of the signs have been touched since. While on the subject of signs, I must inform everyone that every street sign in Bandytown has been stolen except one sign and that is just because it has been violated so many times that no one wants to steal it.
Bandytown has welcomed new neighbors into town while saying “good riddance” to others who have moved out of town. Some of the “troublemakers” have moved out of town and once again Wilbarn Street has been given back to the State of WV. At one time Wilbarn Street was owned by residence who thought they owned the whole holler and demanded peace and quiet at all hours. That has all changed. Other houses in town remain empty with uncertain futures of new occupants or just lying empty for years to come. Even though we gained Wilbarn Street back as a public alley we lost another one. There is an unnamed alley as you come into Bandytown and some new neighbors have taken over it claiming it is part of their property. They have cussed and people and even threatened with physical violence. Some people just think they own everything! Other new neighbors are a live version of the Jerry Springer show. There aren’t words to describe these neighbors so we’ll leave it at that.
The old Bethlehem mine has seen all kinds of action in the last year. Some parts of the old mines were torn down while other parts were reused in a new production plan to haul coal from another adjacent mine. Massey Energy used trucks to haul coal from Twilight through Bandytown to Eagle Energy. This lasted for several weeks and resulted in nothing but speeding complains, dust problems and other nuisance complaints. Massey Energy announced plans that they had sold some of their coal reserves to better benefit their stockholders. The reserves that were sold were the old Bethlehem slate dump which was purchased and was renamed Frasure Creek Mining. They are hauling coal down to the stockpile that was originally used for the first plan to haul coal from Twilight. The coal is been transported “out of the holler” by trains. So once again trains have been running out of Bandytown. Luckily, no one has called and reported any of them for looking suspicious. The guards at the mines are taking their jobs way to seriously. They are hovering over top of you and following you around even if you are just going to the cemetery. They will follow you around like you just packed off a truckload of stuff. Someone needs to tell them to chill out that everything of any value was already stolen from down there years ago by a certain someone we’ll leave unmentioned. No one apparently cared when it was stolen, nor did Massey even have security guards down there to “protect their stuff” so I don’t know why they care so much now. As most people would say “all the good stuff is already gone.” So the next time you go visit your loved ones at Mid Ferrell Cemetery be prepared to be stopped, questioned, have a background check ran, answer 4000 questions, tell them your mother’s maiden name, your social security number and they may even frisk you, which some may enjoy. The guards act like they are guarding all the gold at Fort Knox. Give some people a badge and a uniform and they turn into Robo Cop.
Many locals are getting in the mood for the holiday season. With the recent good weather, many lights have been strung. You could land an airplane on Wilbarn Street. Some residents decorated their house and lawns beautifully while leaving others to be something desired. I think Bandytown had more Santas, reindeer, and baby Jesus’ per capita east of the Mississippi. Luckily there weren’t any transformer explosions this year due to the many strands of lights using all the power produced by the locally mined coal. Residents better be prepared for next years with the Christmas light battle amongst the residents. The usual of trading Christmas Cards and a yearly visit from Santa made Christmas in Bandytown a delight for all the residents even in spite of the occasional Christmas light vomit here and there. Some people need to have their power cut off because of their bad decorating. This just doesn’t apply to Bandytown residents but for everyone.
Speaking of coal, this area depends on the black gold brought out of the hill of the area. Many people would go hungry and be unemployed if it was for the discovery of coal in Boone County in the 1700s by John Peter Salley. It does more than keep the lights on, it keeps Boone County alive. However, like everything else, coal mining has two sides. I think the good outweighs the bad. I would love to see half of the people that complain about mining try to live in this area without mining. It affects your life in one way or another. You may not think so but it does. You may not work for the mines but it’s almost certain someone in your family at one point did. Take mining out of this holler and what do you have left… big bunch of nothing. If you don’t like mining, move out of the area.
With Spring right around the corner, I think Bandytown could use a little spring cleaning. Some people have already started but have quit the job. It looks like Hurricane Ivan has made his way back to Bandytown. Some of the yards could be mistaken for a yard sale or open air flea market. Bandytown is a beautiful place so let’s keep it that way. I just wish it would snow so it would cover up the mess for a bit.
Bandytown has many hidden gems. Who would have thought beavers would take up home in Bandytown. Or did you know that Bandytown has enough dogs, cats, and other farm animals to start a petting zoo? There should be a charge just to get into town to see the turkeys, chickens, goats, and other various four legged freaks (and don’t forget to ones that walk on two as well.) Bandytown has its own drag strip as well. We will eventually have the Bandytown 500 on the NASCAR circuit. This twinkling town in Boone County has more to offer than one expects. Bandytown is rich in history and with residents that live here now, I am sure there will be a bright future. The year 2006 was a blast, and I’m sure 2007 won’t be a disappointment either. Until Next Time America!
P.S. If I have offended anyone who reads this, then I have done my job. The truth hurts and it’s a cruel and unfair world. Please remember this isn’t like the Coal Valley News, other’s opinions and complaints aren’t welcomed.

I thoroughly enjoyed the web page about BANDYTOWN. I knew so many of the people whose names were mentioned and the pictures were great. My Mom and grandmother were from that area. They were related to all the Jarrell's, Greens, and Gunnoes. The Nancy Green Sutphin Jarrell was my greatmother. The Tolbert and Ella Green was a aunt and uncle of my Moms. Would like to hear from any of you who knew these people.

From the obit. of her sister I learned that Pauline lived in Twilight in 2005. The name I have for her husband is COLLIE which may be a nickname. If you can provide any information, please email me at srgraham2@aol.com. Thanks and I enjoyed your web site. Rosalie

I use to live up at Twilight many many years ago. I was so young I thought Bandytown was very far away. Mrs.Dot was my teacher for 1st grade. The song is great. My brother was Porky Jenkins and I remember a Holbert Baire, he and my brother were very good friends. Is Sue his sister? My mother was Oma Long Green, My father was Hammond Green. Great to see Bandytown on the internet, had a wonderful childhood in Boone county. God bless you all. I can remember mom and me hitchiking to get to places, mom didn't drive. Take care Bandytown!
Sue is married to Holbert's brother Johnny Baire, Jr.

Hello Folks, I enjoyed your website much. I am a native West Virginia, from Clarksburg. I liked your mountain wallpaper the best of all. I have notice my one leg is getting shorter, when that happens, I tell my husband, he says time for W.Va and the mountains. My husband is a native of N. J. but adopted W. Va as his native state. Very nice to a homesick native. Thanks Janet

I found out about Bandytown by way of the Dancin' Outlaw video first shown to me back in the mid 90's. Your town looks real nice & not a whole lot different from where we live here, except your hills look a little steeper & taller. Your website is excellent & real informative. Hopefully my family & I can come for a visit sometime. Tell everyone over that way to take care of themselves and tell Jesco White he is "the Man". Have a good one! Barry

The Bandytown web site is great!I was searching to see if their were any old pictures of the Martha F.W. B. church amd also how long the church has been in the community.I attended the 2007 Homecoming yesterday at the church and found out it was their 25th homecoming..They said they don't recall any homecomings taking place in the old church building then they said their was another building before the church in the back alley I remember....when I was 6 years old and stayed with my grandparents Carmel and Edith Doss which is now the Martha F.W.B. fellowship hall.I have a picture of me and my two sisters Pam and Debbie in 1966 standing in the yard.I can recall some of my childhood in Bandytown.I am now writing for a new Boone County Paper "The Boone Standard" that can be purchased in stores on Tuesday for.50 and subscribed in the mail..I am working on an article now about the Martha F.W.B. church 25th Homecoming..their will be pictures also..It will appear in next weeks paper on Aug.14,2007 I would like to see the Boone Standard added to the website.I have numerous articles in the Pond and West Fork area.Anyone know someone that I can do a human interest story on..call me at 247-6376......Thanks Marilyn

I lived with my grandparents Dennis and Pebble Brown in the 1970's. My father was born and raised there. His name is Ronny Hunt. I remember playing with Melinda Culp and Timmy Bailey. And I never could forget John-john... Its hard to believe that I grew up surrounded by Workman's, and I met and marry a Workman in Elkton who has family in West Va???? I never would have thought Bandytown would have it's own website!!!! Good Job. I would also like to let the people of Bandytown know that on 8/3/07 they lost one of their own. My name is Kevin Greene. Me and my girlfriend were doing some family history research on ancestry.com and we found ourselves at this website. My father is Orlin Tillson Greene, the son of Lonnie Bethel "Babe" Greene, the son of Tolbert Greene, the son of George Bandy Greene. I have heard stories of my family and Bandytown but had no idea I had this much history behind me. Along with most of my family I have never saw any pictures of Tolbert nor Ella Greene. I was amazed of what I have been missing and that nobody has any pictures of George Bandy. I just wanted to say thank you for providing this information and hopefully a picture of George Bandy Greene comes up for you and my family.

Hello Bandytown, I grew up in Y&O Coal Camp, went to Y&0Elementary school, and graduated from Van High School in 1956. I worked at Y&O Coal Co for two years after I graduated, and was laid off about March 1958. I joined the US Air Force, where I worked for the next 20 years. After I retired from the USAF, I then worked for the US Postal Inspection Service for 21 more years. I completed 3 years of college, studying Police Science and Criminal Justice. I had many friends in Bandytown, Twilight, Gordon, Wharton, Bim, Barrett. I will always remember my days in Boone County, and I miss it very much. Good luck with your website. I enjoyed the trip down menory lane so very much. I lived at twilight until I started at Van High in 1956 and moved to Bandytown then. My daddy and mother, lakewood and bea greene built the house the peters live in now. There's a pic of the greene family in the photos with my dad kneeling down in fron on the right. Wasn't he a handsome guy? Also a pic of my grandpaw and grandmother, ella and tolbert greene. Just a nice trip I took to visit back in time and remember all the good times I had there with all my friends. Riding bikes in the summer at night with our bike lights on and walking from friends house to friends house without fear of being kidnapped or hurt in any way..Good, Good times that stay with you always..Tell everyone "Hi" for me because their all kinfolk. At one time everyone in bandytown was related somehow. And seeing terry harpers pic was nice. Brought back memories he has probably forgotten but i haven't...love to all, terry ann

I get e mail from Terry, Lakewood's daughter often and enjoy hearing from her. Nice to have found another relative. Leola Howell

Hello Bandytown friends. Back in the early 1960's, I used to pal around with Edmond Hunt, Ray Petry, Larry Harper, Tommy Jarrell, Charlie White and others and enjoyed many evenings sitting around Ed Cooke's gas station being entertained by the older boys like Bobby Cook and his brothers Udell and Delmos, Clyde Jarrell and Buck and Hassell. Do any of you guys yet live in Bandytown? Many good memories. Isn't it amazing how fast the years have gone by?
Hello there, Just a quick word to say I think your site is great and that Bandytown seems like a place I would like to visit. I found this site because of my interest in Hasil Adkins, Jesco White and D.Ray White. Keep up the good work. God Bless Bandytown one more time ! Mike.

I just wanted to take a minute to share a sad bit of news. My Granny was Lula Peters. She passed on around 1974. Her house used to stand on what is now one of empty lots about the middle of the loop on Bandy's Branch Road. I remember driving to Bandytown every other summer to visit, up til Granny passed. Some folks might remember when the house got burned down. She had 8 kids that I know of; Gordon, Auda, Damon, Kessler, Travis, Nobel, Lois, Juanita, and Jody. Gordon was the oldest and as far as I know the last surviving member of one of Bandytown's old famalies. He was born in 1917 in Dorothy. Now the end is approaching after 93 years. It's January 29, 2011 and he is not expected to be with us much longer. Prayers from anyone who remembers the "Peters" family will be appreciated. God Bless Bandytown.
I spent the first four years of my life in Bandytown. Even though I left at age four, I still remember the fun times I had while living there. I was know as Katy Matney. I had three older sisters. I has a special friend named Janie. I still have her picture. I would love to find her but cannot remember her last name. We lived in an apartment behind a store. In fact we could go into the store through the basement. The back of the apartment was built off the ground. It was high enough for us children to play under. I would love to come back some day to visit Bandytown. Even though it was a small town, I have lots of fond memories and it remains in my heart. I was so surprised to see the web site. It has taken me back again to memory lane.

I am the granddaughter of Nelly & Loren Jarrell
Here in illinois we dont support low life drug addict murderers. The fact that thos website for the city has a link to the whites is dispicable. They should be ashamed of themselves and CPS should remove ALL children under 18 from these homes. What is wrong with the cops in boone county???? These motions wouldnt last a week in chicago.
The hills are pretty and I like the old pictures.
