I really enjoyed the trip down memory lane . I grew up in Gordon, graduated in '78 moved away in '84. This sure makes me miss a lot of my old friends in Bandytown, Gordon and Van. It's also good to see.

My mom and brother and sisters have all moved to Madison also still have relatives there but haven't been back there for quite a while but I do remember all the fun we had as kids growing up there, it still looks as it did when I grew up there. It was a nice and friendly place everyone looked out for each other and you didn't have to be afraid that some one would bother you. Keep up the good work will keep coming back for more updates.

I love the site. I have many friends in the Bandytown and Twilight area. Though someone needs to tell all the people running the ATVs on the road to stop. They are illegal on roads with lines, for obvious reasons, and any accident involved with them is automatically the fault of the ATV operator, which means if one wanted to, they could just start chasing them down and running them over lol. In any event, they should at least keep kids under 15 off the roads

In response to the person who made the comments about people riding their ATV's on the road, I would like to know what Bandytown you have been visiting. First of all everyone that rides an ATV in Bandytown is 15 years old or over with some rare exceptions. Even with these exceptions, the kids I am talking about don’t ride on the road at all.  It may be illegal to ride the ATV on the road with yellow lines.  However, no one seems to care about breaking the law when they drive like maniacs thru town. The speed limit is only 25 mph, yet 75 mph seems like what everyone thinks it is. People break the law everyday and I’m sure no one is going to care about riding the four-wheeler on the road. Besides that it’s BANDYTOWN for crying out loud. We aren’t riding on the streets of New York City! For the record, I am not sure just where you went to law school at, but I'm sure it’s not very legal to run people down. I believe that its called manslaughter.  Not at all a laughing matter.

I drive through Bandytown almost daily going to Whitesville. I haul diesel fuel to Van, WV to several surface mines almost daily. I have noticed that just below the ponds along the road just down the creek from Bandytown, there is a large beaver dam in the creek complete with the "beaver lodge" in the water. I certainly enjoy keeping up with the wildlife as I travel through your community. Thanks for putting up the sign with this website on it.

To the woman that hates for the ATV riders on the road...well you can just keep crying about it.  I am still going to ride my ATV underage, without a helmet, and on the road. Who cares ATV's are fun maybe you should get 1 and try it then you would change your mind. There is nothing wrong with being on the roads. All the people that don't like ATV's on the road should all chip in and make ATV trails and for ATV riders to go from Van, Bandytown, Wharton, Greenwood, and Madison. Maybe that will help don't you thing. Love a 15 year old angry ATV rider. GOD BLESS BANDYTOWN

I recieved the address of your site in the E-Mail today and decided to spend a little time visiting. You have really done a beautiful job in setting this up and after seeing those pictures I became rather homesick. I was raised in Van and after graduating in 1959 I left the area only to return for short periods of time since then. I Love those old mountains and look forward to revisiting this site in the future.. Keep up the good work.

Thank you to whoever is responsible for taking me "down home" again. I may have been born and raised in Ohio, but my true roots are in Bandytown. My parents are Clyde Jarrell and Erie Mae (Nookie)Workman. I have two brothers, Mike and Steve Jarrell. I spent a lot of my childhood in Bandytown with my grandparents (Odra and Cynthia Workman). Some of the best times in my life were spent with family and friends down there. Your site is literally beautiful, just as I remember it. Except for the street signs! What in the world do you need street signs for? (grins) And where was the "wet banana" when I was growing up? Looks like fun! Back then though the creek was safe to play in. I can't tell you the countless times as a kid I was "baptised" by my cousins in those waters. LOL Awwww for the memories... Country Roads, Take Me Home...... God has truly blessed us with Bandytown! I'd love to hear from ya'll! All my love, Sherry Ann

Many good people have places in my memory from Bandytown and I wouldn't trade em for anything in the world. Elaine and Tiny told me many scary stories about Bandytown when we were kids when I was spending the night or weekend with them, had me so scared that I didnt want to go out of the house! Salvation came when I started going to High School with those scary stories,,lolol and they turned out to be wanderful people. love my cousins love my memories thanks for the site

Astounding but no one says "Almost Heaven".... Whomever put the website up, it is all your fault. I have spent hours spellbound in reading some of the comments. I am writing to some I saw in the guest book and to think I just got the website from neice yesterday! We lived right beside the Bandytown school for several years, my mom cooked lunches for the school. We moved to Mansfield, Ohio in 1951 where I finished high school at Ontario, Ohio and let me tell you, I knew I wasn't in WV the first day of school in Ohio ....I was borned in Lindytown which they now call Twilight I think? I always thought Chap was up at Matts Creek but guess I was wrong. I really like the website and will return and return, I am sure.

Yes, its true Massey is reopening the old Bandytown coal mine site. The permits should be finished in three to four weeks. The new mine will take around a year to be up and running. I am one of the many coal miners who pass through your town everyday and we all would like to see any old pics of Bandytown and Twilight that you may have.

My friend, Elaine (Workman) Paullus told me about this site. It is so great to see. I grew up in Ohio, but feel that Bandytown and Twilight is my true home. I spent many Summers in Twilight with my Ma-maw and Pa-paw, Courtney and Christine Franklin, and lived in Bandytown with my aunt and uncle, Beecher and Lucy Jarrell. I miss my Bandytown friends and family so much, but still keep in touch with them as much as possible. So...hello Bandytown and this site sure made me "homesick." Hope to visit soon and would love to hear from any of you Bandytowners. P.S. The pictures were wonderful. I have always loved the mountains in the fall.

Good bye to the chubby man wearing a diaper and hello to a little redheaded man wearing green. The leprechauns of B-town invited you to discover Bandytown and let it be your pot of gold. After all of the feelings and affection sharing, bring on the green beer. Since my last entry, three car accidents have taken place. One almost knocked a trailer off its foundation on Carver Street. Another happened down at the old mines. A car slammed into the cement barriers right before the bridge. The third wreck happened when a cement truck ran off the road right before the mines where the beaver dams are. All the beavers could say was “I’m coming to join ya Elizabeth.” Many residents pointed, laughed, and yelled rude gestures at the man who couldn’t drive. Speaking of bad drivers, the upcoming NASCAR season has made many believe tryouts are held in Bandytown. The B-town Turnpike will soon be renamed to Bandytown International Speedway. VAAAAAROOOOO and a streak is all you can see. The $90,000 has been sold for anywhere from $10,000-15,000. Someone bought some prime real-estate for gossiping. They have the ability to spy on both sides of the holler and the bottom half of Bandytown. Boone County Cops have made several appearances to quiet Bandytown. Domestic and looting have been a few reasons not to mention someone setting of top of a house poaching animals. Down at the old mines, there is a new bright light and suspicious fire behind the mines. I guess the security guards are having a late night weenie roast. A new power project is going one up Steer Holler in Bandy’s Brach. The reason for this is still unknown. Someone has been sending blank emails to the spy. I want some juicy gossip not a blank page. Until Next Time America.

I was born and raised at Robinhood and lived there until 1975 (in the good ole days of Armco) I passed through Bandytown almost every day, considering there was no way to get anywhere otherwise. I have many fond memories of the area and the people from there. (Miss Dot was my 1st grade teacher too, at Mooney). So glad Pete emailed me about your site, I really enjoyed it. Great job!!

It’s me again Margaret!!!  The anticipation is over.  The spy has struck again, and I got more than I bargained for.  Wilburn Street and Miller Addition now are property of those who think they own it.  Contrary to popular belief, it is not private property and until you send me the deed to the land, it is still public property.  It is now safe to leave your house because the rooster has left Bandytown.  The owner sent him a packin’.  There just wasn’t enough room in the chicken tree for him.  He crowed his last cock-a-doodle in Bandytown.  There was a yard sale and people were going through it like it was priceless treasures.  The Easter play that the church put on went really well.  The pews were packed both nights of the production.  The other church in Bandytown fixed and graveled the ally leading to their church.  I was wondering why wasn’t it paved when all of the other allies were.  If you know, email me.   The guestbook bandit struck again, but to their surprise, they were reported to the authorities.  A few weeks ago, a loud blast went off after dark.  A few people seem to believe it was a gun shot.  It must be that man on his roof poaching animals again.  Double “D” has left the town.  He moved out and the house is for sale.  If the rumors are true for who will buy it, Bandytown will come alive like it did when they use to live here.  The Carver Street sign was stolen.  If you have any information on the disappearance of the sign, you know what to do.  I have a few suspects of my own.  The stinky ponds sprung a leak and forced motorist to drive thru the nastiness.  The biggest news as of lately was the forest fires.  The DNR made an appearance to put it out and they even brought in helicopters to extinguish the flames.  Only Mother Nature could contain the flames.  Check out the news page of pictures of the event.  Upon visiting the Twilight post office, I saw a flier about the Twilight Family & Community Outreach.  I was just wondering what it is all about.  Email me to give me the inside scoop.  This report has been long overdue and this will never happen again.  I feel I am letting down my fans by not fulfilling my duties.  Until Next Time Bandytown.  P.S. Have your pets spaded and neutered because breeding season is starting.  There just isn’t enough room in Bandytown for all of those little critters.

Did you know that Bandytown was once named Chap. The reason I know this is my Aunt was born in Chap and I could not find it anywhere so I went to the Boone County Court House and they told me. I just thought you would like to know this in case you didn't know already. It is also on some of the birth records after Chap(Bandytown). Also before I forget, Your site is just great and the old photo's and pictures of your town are great. Keep up the great work.

This site is so true and most people don't even realize it. This is a small town with a very big heart. I know several people from Bandytown and they are the nicest people in the world. They will do anything for you and be there when you need them. It's all because that is the way they live and they are used to helping one another in times of need. The pictures are beautiful and I always keep up with the latest news. I applaud the person or persons involved with the creation of this website! May God Bless Bandytown one more time!

I'm not sure who came up with this site, but I think it is the BEST thing ever. Once you live in Bandytown, there's just no other place like home. I love coming to Bandytown. My life has been filled with many precious memories that only comes from Bandytown.  I might only live about 20 miles away, but I go home as often as I can. It's a little easier for me since my brother, Phillip and his family live there. Bandytown is home and always will be. The picture on page 5, I believe, the next to the last one, of the Bandytown Boys, My dad, Randall Scott is the 2nd boys from the right. He has a ball glove in his hand. Thanks for all the great picture--keep up the good work. Sissie

Like I said before. This site is the biggest joke that I have ever seen. U blink twice and u have missed bandytown. U have got jessco white as a hero. You must have alot of time on your hands to make a website about bandytown.

And like I said before, until you leave your real name and quit trying to hide behind a computer, no one cares what you have to say.  It gets old with people writing stupid stuff in here and thinking no one knows who they are.  Here's a NEWS FLASH you can't hide behind a computer. We can't emphasize that enough!  If you really want us to be nasty about it just ask the person who we reported and  AOL permanently banned from the Internet.  Anyways, if this site is such a joke and such a horrible thing, then why has there been over 7000+ people visiting it?  The news and the guestbook alone averages 200-300 visitors a DAY!  If you are going to write stupid stuff you could have at least put the extra effort in it to spell things correctly.

PS.  You don't need to worry about someone having free time on their hands.  After all, look what you are doing with your time.  Maybe you should try studying a dictionary instead of trying to cause trouble on here.  Apparently, you can't even spell where you live so...........have a nice day.

My family moved from "Westville" when our house burned down in 1964. After a while we ended up in Ocala and I have been there ever since. My dad, Ford, died in 1987 and my mother Mable, in 1988. I can never seem to find the time to come back for a visit to my old stomping grounds. This web site sure is nice and informative. Makes me homesick..

I really enjoyed my visit to Bandytown today and as I was coming into town I saw the sign to visit the web site. My dad is Esco Browning and I have a lot of family from that side of the Mountain My grandmother was Alice Browning Shumate and she was laid to rest at the Mid Ferrell Cemetery and my grandfather was Scott Browning He was laid to rest in some other small cemetery on the West Fork I'm not very familiar with the name or the location but I have genuine concern as to what is going to happen to all of our heritage , it makes me feel like we are like the American Indians that were ran off the land and placed on reservations . Don't let these coal company's buy your heritage for a few dollars

I stumbled on your website while searching the Jarrell mailing list. I have been researching my Jarrell family links and am hoping someone can help me. I saw so many Jarrell and Workman photos. My great grandfather was John Kemper Jarrell, born in 1862. My mother said he was from Boone County. I think his parents may have been Benjamin Jarrell and Mary Workman, but I am not sure. Are there any Jarrell family members out there who might know anything about this family. I really enjoyed your website.

I have to say I have been to this site quite a few times, and its great! I enjoy viewing the old pictures, especially the one of my Grandparents Donald and Bertie Mae White!! I was just a youngin when my grandfather past, wish he could still be here with us! Thanks for the nice comments about him. By the way my grandmother is doing well herself she now lives in Minnesota with her son. As for Jesco, I live about 15 minutes from him so I see him often, he is the same ole Jesco! I have to say there was a few rude comments in the guestbook and the people who left them must not really know him. He can be wild and crazy but really deep down he a kind person who never meets a stranger! Thank You Bandytown for the great website keep up the good work. I was only around 3yrs old when I left Bandytown, but I will never forget where it is..:) GOD BLESS!!

Great Site! Very creative and fun to visit. I lived just over the other the mountain in Dry Branch Hollow at Bim in the early 80's. I remember some happy times at the "Ponderosa" on weekends and rowdy times at the "Grill" (that I should probably forget;) Trying to walk in the Lord's ways now. Lots of GOOD people on the "Left Hand Fork". God Bless You ALL!

I saw the sign today that Bandytown had a website. How wonderful! Lovely pictures and nice history. Fun town. My Grandma Alice (Browning) Shumate raised my dad Esco Browning, his sisters and brothers there. We visited Preston's Branch about once a month. She lived in a tiny 4 room house and always had a pie waiting for us. She raised a garden till she was in her 80's... I always enjoyed visiting my Grandmother and walking down the dirt road, throwing a lot of rocks and kicking cans down the road with my brother Tony. Brings back nice memories. Lots of family still in the area. I'll always go back and visit.

I visit more often now as I retired 3 years ago and have time now to enjoy life as it should be. I still have many friends and fond memories of this little hollow in the coal fields. I love this site and the pictures are wonderful!!! I grew up in the Van area and have friends that lived in the Bandytown area; we probably spent more time than we needed to at the Grill and Browns Branch! The master of this site is greatly appreciated for preserving so much of the history of Bandytown! Hats off to the person or persons responsible for this fantastic site.
