"IN THE SPOTLIGHT"

Coal Valley News has a new section on their paper where they feature people who deserve to be recognized.  Currently, featured is Nancy McCann.  Here is the complete story:

NANCY MCCANN

TWILIGHT WOMAN TURNS 104

Although her life has spanned more than a full century, Nancy McCann still hasn't lost her spunk.  "Hello there," McCann declared in her sweet voice as she walked through the door at the Van Community Center on Monday, when she turned 104 years old.  Five generations of her relatives, plus dozens of her friends, filled the small room inside the community center to help McCann celebrate her birthday that afternoon with an old-fashioned, home-cooked supper followed by cake.  "She still lives by herself and takes care of herself," said Holly Weaver, who is one of her great-great nieces.  "She is very independent."  Boone County Commission President Mickey Brown also attended the ceremony during which he presented McCann with a certificate honoring her for her long life.  "She is one of the oldest people in Boone County, if not the oldest," Brown said.  Friends and relatives have learned many lessons from McCann, Teresa Holstein Sutton said, but there is one in particular that she always tries to teach them.  "Be a Christian person and live a Christian life," said Sutton, who is one of her great nieces.  "She always pounds that into our heads.  She attributes her long life to that."

Special thanks to the person who sent in the above photo!
