Mabel Bullard (1885-1971) was the daughter of Reuben James, Jr (1848-1934) and Alice Smith Bullard (1852-1903). "RJ" and Alice met in Middleport, Ohio, where her father owned a men's clothing store, and Reuben was the treasurer of a salt company whose office was next door to the clothing shop. Later, Reuben and Alice moved to Wheeling where RJ joined the business of his father, Reuben James, Sr,(1818-1871) who owned the Bullard Printing Company. Reuben Sr had been born in Fredericksburg, Va, son of George Harrison (1785-1828)and Judith Rollow Bullard, and grandson of yet another Reuben Bullard (1748-1797), the first documented Bullard in our line. Judith and Reuben came from families that stretch back to the 1600s in VA, and are familiar names to anyone who researches in King George, Richmond, stafford or Accomack Cos, VA. Some of the family names are Davis, Berry, Harrison, Doughty, Hoskins, Jett, Jones, and Washington.
Alice Smith was the daughter of James R. Smith, and was born in Clarington, Monroe County, Ohio. After her mother, Araminta Smith, died at an early age, James and his 3 small daughters (Alice, Eva and Edith) moved to Middleport, Monroe County, Ohio.

The Smith family originally came to Ohio from York County, PA, and James's parents, Joseph and Roseanne Baxter Smith, were members of the the Seceder's sect of Presbyterianism. After marrying in York County, PA, they emigrated to Warren Twp, Jefferson County, Ohio, and were buried in the Seceder's Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant, Jefferson County, Ohio. Their children were James, the eldest, Joseph Lafayette, who became an attorney and judge in Ravenswood, WV, Susanna, Eleanor Beatty, Jane, Andrew Duncan, George B. and Ferdinand Spangler, all mentioned in the wills of Joseph and Rosanne.
Alice Smith Bullard was killed in 1903, when she was struck by a trolley while walking home from Christmas shopping. Her hearing was poor, and it is thought that she simply didn't hear it's approach.....she died almost instantly, after her leg was partially severed and her hat pin was driven into her head.
Reuben, Alice's husband, married a second wife, Minnie Koehnline, but had no children other than those he had with his first wife Alice; Mabel, Maude, Hazel and Ernest. Reuben and Alice are buried in Old Stone Church Cemetery, Wheeling, Ohio County, WV.
