Computers

View From Vietri

If you are bringing a computer to Naples, or planning to buy one while stationed here there are few things you should know in advance.

Consult the technical information below.

If you already own a computer:

Consider upgrading now, prior to transfer.

If you have any programs that will need to be downloaded or upgraded using the Internet, now is the time to do it!! The reason to download now will be explained under Internet Service below. I highly recommend installing either AOL Instant Messenger or ICQ for a quick and reliable means of "chatting" in real time with friends or family who also have a computer and Instant Messenger. Enrollment in AOL is not required, and the software and use are free.  Personally I use ICQ and find it very easy to use and very dependable.

The Navy Exchange carries upgrade components such as, hard drives, modems and memory, however selection is frequently limited due to delays in shipments. The latest editions of software are also frequently delayed, and are limited in quantity, and variety.

Printer cartridges, printer paper, stationary, and other accessories are normally available, though in limited selection.

Games are available through both the computer store and the NEX, again, quantity and variety are limited.

It would be wise to bring extra supplies, in the event your favorite items or brands are in limited supply, or not readily available.  I find that I have very good luck with purchasing upgrades, software, & ink on the Internet.

It would be a good idea if you have a computer to sign up for one of the free e-mail services, such as Yahoo, Hot Mail, Geocities, etc. If you would like to continue to use e-mail as a source of "keeping in touch" prior to the arrival of your household goods, moving into a home, and the connection of your telephone.   You can access the Internet on base at the libraries, Cyberspace store at Agnano, USO or Fleet & Family Support Center.  You will need an Internet e-mail address though to retrieve your mail.
If you are planning to buy a computer in Naples:
Computer systems normally available are Compaq and AST, along with Epson, Canon and some HP printers. There are scanners available, also in limited brands. Systems are available on the local economy, however taxes, software variations and language may make purchasing prohibitive. If you do purchase off the economy, ensure that the system is capable of operating on 110 volts without a transformer, so that it can continue to be used after your return to the States.

Technical Information:
Most computers sold over the past few years in the United States are capable of operating on either 110 volts or 220 volts and either 50 or 60 cycles. Refer to your system manuals or the labels on the back of your computer or monitor. Not all accessories such as printers or scanners may have this option. If your computer equipment does not have the voltage options available, you will have to use a transformer to operate your computer. I currently operate my system, with two printers and a scanner on a transformer, and have had no major problems. Transformers are available from the NEX, and are also issued as part of your loaner furniture package at move in. Most people have little or no problems using their US equipment while living in Italy. Be forewarned that electrical power is not as stable in some parts of the local area, and surge protectors are highly recommended and available locally.
Internet Service:
On-line service is available through local Italian providers, and through contract with vendors on the Base. Generally, 33.6 Kbs is the maximum available speed, although higher speeds are being offered by a limited number of providers. Most providers require annual contracts paid in advance, which may include set up of your computer, and software if necessary. Normally most amounts required by providers is lower than what you would pay stateside for AOL, CompuServe, Prodigy, etc. It is important that you select a provider that has a local access number near where you live, and high speed connections, as all telephone calls are billed in units determined by distance, length, and time of day. The closer you are to your provider's connection point and the faster you can download information, the more reasonable your telephone bill will be (see "Utilities Link"). An option available to the local telephone service is the availability of one reduced price number per household. The number given to the telephone company (such as your Internet provider) will be reduced by fifty percent after a minimum connect time on each call.   There are also several free Internet service providers such as Interfree, Librero, and Tin.  Be aware though, that you will still pay normal telephone usage fees using these free services.
