BIRMINGHAM'S BEST RETAILER FOR METAL AND HARDCORE

NIGHTS OUT

HERE'S A LIST OF DECENT PLACES IN AND AROUND BIRMINGHAM CITY CENTRE

CENTRE OF TOWN

FLAPPER AND FIRKIN, THE (Music: Rock type stuff) The Flapper's a bit out of the way and i've never been when a band hasn't played. Apparently they DJ rock type stuff on Saturday nights. It's a bit of an alternative hang-out whatever.
FOUNDRY, THE (Music: Punk/Indie) Opens at 7pm every day. Live bands sometimes, every Monday anyway.
COSTERMONGERS (Music: Metal/Rock) Expensive drinks but open all day
PRIORY, THE Never been here to be honest but has a bit of a rock reputation.
Saturdays: Classic Rock
Address: Next door to Argos / The blood donor centre, Priory Square.
SQUARE PEG, THE (Music: n/a) A Wetherspoons pub - No atmosphere but cheap booze and no dress restrictions except a ban on football colours!
OLD RAILWAY, THE (Music: Punk/Metal/Hardcore/whatever) Hey, free in to see bands on tues/wed, whatya complaining about? This place gets fucking weird late on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday too, check it out! This isn't an exageration either, you need to go to understand.
SPUTNIK (Music: Varied!) Not strictly punk/metal/hardcore but the spirit's there. It's a neat city centre alternative to lads pubs and pretentious bars and prides itself on it's music eclecticism and lack of sport on TV. Beer is £1.40 a pint up till 7pm. Open 5-11 Weekdays, 12-11 Fri/Sat. Special features include the smallest Gent's khazi in Birmingham, a spinning pink flamingo, unique floral display and the spectacle of a grands worth of Technics desks balanced on two bar stools. No dress restrictions and a sign saying something like "We reserve the right to refuse serving drunk annoying lads". Cool.
Fridays: Bad taste varieties: Expect to hear Motorhead followed by Chas'n Dave .....ya get the drift...
Saturdays: Playing contemporary stuff that isn't shit, plenty of first generation Punk Rock, 60's garage and some psychedelia, mad 60's and 70's funk and some of the more mental dance tunes of the moment.
TOREADOR, THE (Music: Goth) Opposite the Rag market, Goth / "Industrial [i.e. not really]" on Friday and Saturday nights
MERCAT, THE (Music: Goth) Best on Saturday nights and often has good (I could make a cheeky comment but I won't) Goth bands playing.

OUT OF TOWN

BRISTOL PEAR, THE - Selly Oak (Under the railway bridge over Bristol Road) (Music: Goth / Alternative / Industrial / Eighties). This is a spin-off from the University Goths, it happens every other Friday (the same Friday as "Contamination" is on at Edwards nightclub). 7:30pm - 11:00pm, 50p entry and (it think) cheap drinks.
EDWARDS No. 8 Expensive drinks, friendlier that XLs.
Thursday: One floor's "Grunge Revival" - Early 90's Alt Rock sort of stuff, but I've never been.
Friday: Upstairs alternates Heroes [80's] with Contamination [Goth/Industrial], downstairs Offspring/Nirvana/Garbage/Prodigy, you get the idea.
Saturday: Upstairs pop punk, with DJ Ed from Pignut, downstairs I think it pretty much the same as Fridays.
Open till 2am
Address: Phone:

XLs Expensive door, cans of Carling £1.50.
Wednesdays: Something or other
Friday: Pretty empty, play all requests in theory but dead arsey DJs who'll chuck you out at the drop of a hat or telling them they're shit [which they are].
Saturday: The busiest place to go on a Saturday night. Same Kerrang! worshipping brain-dead DJs as Fridays. Open till 4am
Bands play in the side room sometimes, ring for details.
