BIRMINGHAM'S BEST RETAILER FOR METAL AND HARDCORE
PANTERA
Pantera's massively brutal, aggressive, jagged heavy metal earned them a large cult following in the early '90s. During the early '80s, the band explored several different styles of hard rock; sometimes they sounded like Kiss and Aerosmith, others Def Leppard. After several years of struggling the band changed their tune in 1988, becoming rougher and harder, much like Metallica. Guitarist Diamond Darrell (aka "Dimebag") rejected an offer to join Megadeth, concentrating on Pantera's new direction. The change in style proved successful; 1992's A Vulgar Display of Power became an underground metal hit, eventually scaling Billboard's Top 50. When their new album, Far Beyond Driven, was released in 1994, the band debuted at number one. Some chart-watchers were surprised, but anyone that followed their rise from obscurity to A Vulgar Display of Power knew that Pantera was one of the most popular metal bands of the early '90s. Great Southern Trendkill was released in May 1996, and a year later the group issued Official Live: 101 Proof; Reinventing the Steel followed in the spring of 2000.
