Fairbanks in December

Next is January

Does it really get that dark in Alaska?

Let me put it this way.  Is this text difficult to read on this starry background?  Imagine trying to drive down the road every day with the same view.  If you put your headlights on bright, you have the distinct feeling of piloting a starship.

Ahhhhh, that's much better.  The sun comes up around 10:30 a.m. and goes down before 3 in the afternoon  If I sleep late, I can easily miss a whole day.

December, 2001, began below freezing.  By the third, the high temperature for the day is twenty-five below zero Fahrenheit.  When the temperature is this cold, no snow falls.

The sky is crystal clear, unless you live in the valley.  Then you might be shrouded in ice fog.  Vehicles drive with their headlights on all the time.  Air quality in Fairbanks is measured for pollution.  To cut down on vehicles in the downtown area, free bus service is provided during the winter.

Fairbanks is a few miles north of North Pole, the town.  We get a lot of cold weather.  Fairbanks is situated south of the Arctic Circle.  The coldest it has been this month has been 10 below zero F.  I remember a December that dropped to 55 below zero Fahrenheit.

I use winter as a time to catch up on indoor projects like updating my web pages.  I crochet and I love snuggling up with a good book in front of the fireplace.

Snowplows push the snow off the roads.  After awhile the highways clear off down to the pavement from the busy traffic.  When intersections get icy, trucks spread pea gravel to increase traction.

During October and November, 2001, the interior had the second lowest level of snowfall on record.
