P. Ramlee's works had slowly been growing. His Semerah Padi was a showcase and saw a number of special effects being used. Child’s play compared to today but I presume stupendous those days. Semerah Padi was a film that focused on filial duty and honour of the Malays of old and now gone by. In 1957, he directed the films, Panca Delima and Bujang Lapuk. In the same year, he won the Best Actor Award at the Tokyo Asian Film Festival, for his role in the film, Anakku Sazali. In the following year, his film Sumpah Orang Minyak won the "Best Black and White Photography" award at the Manila Asian Film Festival. Yet, even though he acted in some rather interesting dramas and thillers, some of his best work were comedies. Pendekar Bujang Lapuk was chosen for the "Best Comedy" award at the 1959 Kuala Lumpur Asian Film Festival. The film has become the trademark for P.Ramlee films - simple humour based on the paradoxes of Malay life. He went on to win more awards including "Best Comedy" award for Nujum Pak Belalang in 1960, "Most Versatile Talent" award at the 1963 Tokyo Asian Film Festival for the film, Ibu Mertuaku, the "Best Comedy" award for his film, Madu Tiga in 1964. Some of the better films were made during these years including Musang Berjanggut, Si Tora, Ragam P. Ramlee, Masam-masam Manis, Sabaruddin Tukang Kasut, Do Re Mi, Nasib Do Re Mi, Labu-Labi, Nasib Labu-Labi, Ali Baba Bujang Lapuk, Seniman Bujang Lapuk, Antara Dua Darjat, Sesudah Subuh, Keluarga 69, Anak Bapak, Gerimis, Putus Sudah Kasih Sayang, Albab, Kancan Tirana, Doktor Rusydi, Gelora, Enam Jahanam, Tiga Abdul, Jangan Tinggal Daku and his final movie, Laksamana Do Re Mi. This bright star of the Golden Age of Malay film went out on May 29th, 1973. There will never be another like him....
