But each time the ball splashes into the drink. In utter frustration the golfer said, "Caddie, take my clubs on in, I'm going to jump into the water and drown myself." The caddie replied, "I doubt that, sir. You couldn't keep your head down long enough to drown!" ------------------------------------------------------------ *** SOFTWARE, SOFTWARE, SOFTWARE *** Get news and alerts on software that is available for f-r-e-e either on CDRom or by Download. He has 15 mil- lion miles on his clubs, making him history's most-traveled professional athlete, and he's not slowing down. In the past three weeks, Player said he has gone across 40 time zones doing corporate outings and playing in golf tournaments. So what better person is there to talk to about Ernie Els' latest tussle with the PGA Tour over his world golf schedule? Els recently received a letter from PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem informing him that if he wants more than the standard three releases that a tour member annually receives to play in a "conflicting" event, he must play more than the minimum number of 15 tournaments. Player -- a South African like Els, and among the first golfers to play all over the world -- believes that's wrong. "Ernie wants to prove to everyone he's the best player in the world, not just the best player in the United States," Player said by phone recently from his ranch in Johannesburg, South Africa. "I applaud him for that. That was exactly my same ambition when I was his age. I wanted to be the best player in the world." So does Els. That's why he's the last globetrotting player left among the game's elite. No top player competes around the world more often. A big reason for this is Els loves those appearance fees that can rise above $300,000 in some cases. "To keep your card on the U.S. tour, you have to play 15 events and I have already played more than that, and I haven't finished yet," Els told repor- ters recently in London. "But they are saying they want over 20 and nothing abroad. Naturally, we have to sit down and talk, but one thing is for sure -- don't start putting a pad- lock around me. Don't make a barrier, because that's not going to work." Player praised Tiger Woods' efforts to promote the game around the world, but said he's saddened that so many top American players rarely travel outside the United States. He thinks that hurts not only their game, but the game. "To me, the ultimate test was to win around the world, because you had to adapt to different environments, customs, languages," Player said. "A lot of the American players are so pampered and so spoiled that if things aren't the way they want it or as nice as it is back home, they don't want to play there. Isn't it our responsibility to grow this game around the world?" Els will have played in 18 PGA Tour events this year, with seven of them the four majors and the three World Golf Championships. He has played in seven European events (besides the aforemen- tioned seven that count on both tours). Els also has played in Korea, Australia and South Africa this year. "I have great respect for Tim Finchem, but he needs to remember Ernie was not born in this country," Player said. "It reminds me of some- thing President Eisenhower said to me a long time ago: The world is a very big place, and the U.S. is a very small part of that. We need the world, and the world needs us." ------------------------------------------------------------ Questions? Comments?
