The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants

Home Summary Characters Quotes Setting Soundtrack About the Author About Me

The novel takes place at four main locations. What's interesting is that all four are actual places. Ann Brashares must have really put some thought and research into each, as the descriptions in the novel are quite detailed and accurate. Here is an idea of each, and some extra information.

The Traveling Pants' first stop is the Village of Oia, in Santorini, Greece. This is the home of Lena's grandparents, who she is visiting for the summer.

The next stop is back "home", in Bethesda, Maryland, with Tibby. If you look closely at the map, you can see various streets mentioned in the book. (For example, Wisconsin Ave. and Old Georgetown Road). Another interesting note is that Bethesda is right next to Chevy Chase, the community where Ann Brashares grew up. The Traveling Pants make their way to Carmen Next. She is staying in Charleston, South Carolina, with her father - and his new family. They live in a Victorian house in a suburban area, instead of in the downtown apartment, like the ones seen here, that Carmen expected. Want to know more about Charleston? Visit their website.

The final setting is with Bridget in soccer camp, near Mulegé, Baja, Mexico. This is a picture of a beach near Mulegé, similar to what Bee camped out on. Want to surf Baja? Surf the web first! Go to www.baja.com or read about one couple's vacation (plus pictures) by clicking here.
