Sam Hopson Sr., 75
Lifelong Alaskan Sam Perry Hopson Sr., 75, died March 3, 2004, at Alaska Native Medical Center from complications of pneumonia.
Memorial services will be at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church in Fairbanks. A second service will be Tuesday at the Utqiakvik Presbyterian Church in Barrow.
The son of Steve and Eunice Hopson, he was born April 20, 1928, at Uuliktuq spring camp near Kaktovik and raised in Barrow.
He married Mable Brower on Feb. 24, 1949.
Mr. Hopson worked for Arctic Contractors and Vinnell Corp. in Barrow in the late '40s. They moved to Fairbanks in 1951 and he worked for the Alaska Railroad and the U.S. Civil Service at Fort Wainwright. He worked for Wien Air Alaska, retiring after 29 years of service. He belonged to Teamsters Local 959.
His family wrote: "Sam Hopson will be primarily remembered as a hunter. He has captured every type of big game, both sea and land animals. He loved to go spring whaling with Kupaak and Aalaak crews in Barrow, where as a harpooner he landed several whales. Goose hunting usually followed. In the summer, Sam was at Chitina dipnetting; in the fall he always bagged his caribou on the Denali Highway, even in his 75th year.
"Sam will be remembered for his hunting skills and his hospitality toward friends and family traveling between the North Slope and Outside. He traveled extensively in the Pacific Rim, touring Hawaii, Western and American Samoa, New Zealand, Australia, Tahiti and many other places."
Mr. Hopson is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mable Hopson; sons and daughters-in-law, the Rev. Brower Mike and Georgia Hopson, Steven Hopson, and Sam Jr. and Evelyn Hopson; daughter, Eunice and husband Johnny Brower; grandchildren, Christine and Donovan, Celeste, Jesse, Michelle and Marie, Jeremy, Roger Jr. and Ianjon, Jedediah, Harry and Patricia, and Ruth, and Samuel; foster daughter, Kim and husband, Brian Flaherty, and their children, Christina and David; sister and brother-in-law, Patricia and George Paulsberg; and other family members including Annie Hopson, Steve Hopson Jr. and Fred Hopson; and many in-laws, nieces and nephews in Alaska.
