Anchorage resident Lena Mae Shontz, 73, died May 12, 2005, at home while surrounded by her family.
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church in Anchorage. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Utqeagvik Presbyterian Church in Barrow.
Mrs. Shontz was born Nov. 18, 1931, near Beechy Point (located near Prudhoe Bay), to Henry and Evelyn Nashaknik. She was raised in a subsistence lifestyle along the Colville River delta and Barrow.
Mrs. Shontz enjoyed hunting and fishing.
In 1958, she married Allen Joe Shontz. They raised six children in Barrow, moving later to Seattle and Anchorage.
Mrs. Shontz was an active member of the Barrow Mothers Club and participated in many community activities. She was also an avid gardener, camper and clam digger.
Her family said: "She was an accomplished seamstress, and her muskrat-skin parkas, calfskin trimmings, Eskimo masks and angels were sought by many. Lena Mae was happiest in a patch of berries, and berry picking was her passion."
Mrs. Shontz is survived by her husband of 47 years, Allen Joe Shontz; daughters and sons-in-law, Evelyn and Sam Hopson, Debra Shontz, Beverly Eliason, Barbara and Chris Morgan, and Joyce Taylor; son, Joe Allen Shontz; sisters, Cora Simmonds, Eunice Teerik, Juanita Sceeles and Elizabeth Hollingsworth; brothers, Joseph Nashaknik, Joshua Nashaknik and Darrell Nashaknik; brother-in-law, Steve Burkhart; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; and stepgranddaughter, Verna Norton. Parents: Henry Keesik Nasaknek Nashaknik and Evelyn Manuyaaluk Agiak.

Spouse: Allen Shontz. Lena Mae Nashaknik and Allen Shontz were married in 1958.

The first two years of Umigluk's whaling hunts were unsuccessful. His success came in the third year, in 1931. His partner was James Nashookpuk, who was married to Dinah's sister, Jane. Umigluk and James bought their whaling equipment from Charlie Jensen, who is now living in Kotzebue but was originally from the village of Kivalina. They bought all the gear from Charlie for about $250. This included the shoulder gun, two darting guns, tackle, harpoons, knives, and so on. Umigluk had a boat which was given him by his father, and that was how they got started.
The first whale in 1931 was caught on May 2nd. It was an ifutuq approximately twenty eight feet in length. Everyone was excited about the catch especially the captain and his crew. Unfortunately, Dinah was in the hospital when her crew caught the whale, but she did make it back for the fall celebration. Her sister carried out all of Dinah's responsibilities towards their crew for her.
After the first catch, Umigluk bought out James' share of their whaling equipment and went to hunting by himself and his crew. All together, he had a total of eleven whales. This is no small catch as very few whalers can boast of such a number. With all the excitement and the prestige one derives from being an umialik, Umigluk decided to give up whaling in 1966. Therefore, he gave his gear and boat to his son, Teddy. Parents: Peter Kooneak or Koonooyak and Ella A Nulealchea.

Anchorage resident Warren Lee Nashookpuk Sr., 68, died Feb. 22, 2005, at Alaska Native Medical Center.
A service will be at 4 p.m. Monday at the Anchorage Friends Church. Additional services will be Wednesday at the Episcopal Church in Point Hope.
Mr. Nashookpuk was born Nov. 15, 1936, in Point Hope. He was a resident of Point Hope and Anchorage and a retired veteran of the Army National Guard.
Mr. Nashookpuk was involved in his community's search and rescue and was a member of the Episcopal Church.
He loved carving, playing cards on the computer, hunting and whaling, traveling and boating, berry picking with his beloved wife, helping people, and teasing.
His family said: "Warren was a very devoted and loving husband to his beloved wife, Abigail. (He was) also a loving father to his children, grandchildren, and to his great-grandchildren. (He was) also a loving uncle to many nieces and nephews. He was loved by his brothers, sisters and his many brothers- and sisters-in-law. Warren was very giving to others who needed financial help. He'll always be near to the love of his life, Abigail. His favorite verse of the Bible was Romans 6:23."
Mr. Nashookpuk is survived by his wife, Abigail Nashookpuk; children, Dean and Jane Hank, Johnny Nashookpuk, and Florence Kingik; brothers, Titus, Raymond, Jonah, Eugene and Oran; sisters, Rose, Barbara, Eunice, Dolly, Mary, Bernice and May; 15 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his sons, Freddy Nashookpuk, Warren Nashookpuk Jr., Roy Walton, Henry Nashookpuk, Delbert Walton, Floyd Wesley, Joshua Sours and Clinton Reed; and sisters, Linda Nashookpuk and Emma Nashookpuk.
Memorial donations can be made to Abigail Nashookpuk, 8800 Centennial Circle 303, Anchorage 99504.
