Allen Shontz was born on 29 November 1927 in Los Angeles, , California. He died on 21 December 2007 in Anchorage, Anchorage, Alaska.
Anchorage resident Allen Joe Shontz, 80, died Dec. 21, 2007, of natural causes at his winter home in Yuma, Ariz., while surrounded by family members. An Anchorage memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church, 616 W. 10th Ave. Friends are invited to join the family for a celebration of life afterward at the home of Chris and Barbara Morgan, 13741 Mainsail Drive. Allen was born Nov. 29, 1927, in Los Angeles. He served as a merchant marine and later in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, ending his military service with an honorable discharge. He attended the University of Southern California before coming to Alaska. In the early '50's, the building of the Dew Line system brought him to Barrow, where he also worked as an aircraft mechanic for Wein Airlines. He married Lena Mae Nashaknik in Barrow in 1958, and they had six children. Allen was active in his community, serving on the Barrow School Board and the Boundary Commission, contributing to the formation of the North Slope Borough. He was a member of the Barrow Lions Club for many years and sponsored a local basketball team named the Shontz Bears. Allen was an avid bush pilot, flying several types of aircraft. He spent many weekends in his Piper Cub, flying friends and family members to fishing camps and guided hunting trips on the Arctic Slope and out on the Arctic Ocean. Throughout his life, Allen accomplished and retired from several enterprising careers, first establishing a large general store known as Shontz Store, which grew to be the largest store in Barrow that provided everything from fresh produce and snowmachines to rubber boots, his family wrote. He later owned the Wenatchee Jeep dealership and Puyallup Marina in Washington state, and partnered on safari ventures in the San Juan Islands of Washington and in Chad, Africa. After moving to Anchorage In the early '90's, Allen entered the commercial setnet fishing industry in Bristol Bay. Allen enjoyed many hobbies, most particularly camping, fishing, hunting, flying and traveling. He captained his fishing boat on the Kenai Peninsula, where he taught his children and grandchildren to fish and took friends and family fishing every summer. In 2005, Al became a snowbird and spent his winters in Arizona with Morrie and Margaret Lemen and Lloyd Jones. He spent his summers between his daughter's home in Anchorage and his summer family in Ninilchik. His family wrote: "He is remembered by lifelong friends and family as a spirited, adventurous and generous man, accumulating such nicknames as 'Shontzie,' 'Uncle Al the Kiddies Pal,' and 'Grandpa MacGyver.' He lectured and guided his children into responsible adults who provided him with 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, never running out of lectures for the next child who came along. He was a loving, wonderful husband, father and grandfather, devoted to his family and friends." Allen was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 48 years, Lena Mae Shontz, and son-in-law, Scott Eliason.
