Helena Shoudlaak was born on 22 June 1946 in Wainwright, Noatak-Kobuk, Alaska. She died on 2 July 2009 in Bay City, Michigan. Former Alaska resident Helena Shoudla Sheets of Bay City, Mich., died July 2, 2009, at Bay Regional Medical Center. Her family wrote that she has "passed into eternal life." A memorial service will be 6 p.m., with a visitation from 4-6 p.m., Thursday at Trahan Funeral Chapel in Bay City. Officiating will be the Rev. Beth Rakestraw. She was born June 22, 1946, in the small Arctic Coast village of Wainwright to Joseph and Edna (Soakhukpuk) Shoudla and was the youngest of 11 children, six of whom died in infancy. An Alaska Native American, she spoke Inupiaq and learned English in grade school. She graduated from Mt. Edgecumbe High School in Sitka in 1965 and then completed the Indian Health Service dental assisting program. She started assisting in Anchorage and there she met her future husband Dr. Darrell Sheets in 1972. She continued dental assisting until 1997. Having much talent with needle and thread, Helena enjoyed regular meetings with her sewing group. Her work decorated homes from the family's many moves and was a skill she used throughout her life. A talented cook, the holidays were always filled with varieties of homemade cookies given to family and friends. She saw much of the U.S. and Europe from traveling and had many albums of memories. She and her special friend Charlotte looked forward to their casino outings with Helena often winning and receiving numerous comps. Helena also enjoyed the company of her breakfast group, volunteering at the Red Cross, home tours and shows, thumbing through home magazines and reading. Helena's determination and inner strength saw her through many of her later health troubles, and her many friends and family members will miss her very much. Helena is survived by her brother, Glen Shoudla and sister, Lydia Agnasagga, both of Wainwright; her two sons, Joseph (Amy) Sheets of Kingsley, Mich., and Christopher of Bay City; two grandchildren, Joe Jr. and Olivia; many nieces and nephews and, though separated, her husband Darrell. She was predeceased by her parents; and sisters Emily Ungudruk and Annie Bowen. At Helena's request, cremation has taken place.
