~~CAMPMASTERS FOR THE NIGHT~~

  "Tell me again why we're doing this?"
   "Because they needed someone to watch over the camp for this
one night and none of the regular campmasters{1} were available.",
Trowa explained, "Besides the camp isn't as busy as it normally is,
so we'll get some time alone."
   Wufei grumbled and wrinkled his nose at the smell of the cabin.
The place smelled of old dust and dried mouse poop... enough to
make him sick to his stomach. It was a wonder to how the regular
campmasters had never even thought to do a thorough cleaning
of the quarters! Disgusting! He didn't even want to THINK about
using any of the utensils in the cabins small kitchen before washing
them himself... who knew how many mice used the utensil drawer
as their private bathroom! Ugh! He would've preferred to pitch a
tent outside with Trowa and spend the night in there instead.
   Trowa watched in amusement as his ebony-haired lover
gingerly picked up an old styrofoam cup from the floor and
tossed it into the small black trash can near the cabin's office door.
Wufei obviously did NOT like the thought of having to stay in the
cabin, but Trowa felt that he needed to get the smaller youth out
of the city for a while and signing them both up as temporary
campmasters was the perfect excuse. They'd still be hidden
from prowling OZ eyes, plus the camp was so much out in
nature that they'd have some room to move about freely together.
An added bonus was that the surrounding forest this particular
camp was nestled in was breathtaking this time of year; the oak
and maple leaves turning from tender greens to brilliant yellows,
oranges, and browns, the pines leaving the last traces of green as
a thin line of frost gathered every morning, kissing the fallen leaves
and stones with its shining caress. Trowa had heard so many terrible
rumors about New Jersey being a cold concrete jungle, but all that
was thrown out the door when he and the four other Gundam pilots
were placed in a safe house in the northern part of the state. Yes, it
had its dark and dismal areas, like every other state, but for the
most part, the Garden state lived up to its nickname.{2}
 "Um, Trowa? Have you seen the water bottles I bought?",
Wufei asked as he rummaged through the shopping bags of food on
the table in the office quarters. "I could've sworn I bought a six-pack
of them while we were at the Shoprite."{3}
   "Yeah, I think you might have left them out in the back of the
Jeep," Trowa answered. He turned and followed Wufei out to the
tan vehicle. Not exactly the fastest car they've ever rented, but it was
good on the camps rough and rocky roads and paths.
   The evening air was cool and crisp, causing Wufei to shiver a bit as
he fumbled for the jeep keys. His breath formed little crystalized clouds
as he exhaled. "Damn," he cursed under his breath, "It's getting
colder and colder each day. Before we know it, we'll have to shovel
our way out to the Gundams!"
   Trowa stood behind Wufei and rubbed his hands vigorously over
his lovers arms to warm him up. "Well, mi corazon, the news did
report a possibility of..."
   "Don't even say it!", Wufei interrepted angrily.
   "...snow."
   Wufei moaned in disgust. "I told you not to say that!"
   Trowa laughed warmly and pulled the other boy closer, wrapping
his arms around Wufei. He rested his chin on Wufei's head, loving
the exotic scent of his silken hair.
   A wicked smile crept across Wufei's face. "You know, we could
get into a lot of trouble of the ranger ever caught us like this," he
laughed, leaning back against his taller lover. "Not that I'm
complaining or anything!"
   Trowa moaned and buried his face into Wufei's hair. "Yeah,
I know... I know! **sigh!** No PDA [4] allowed. Damn rules!"
   "Hmph... true angel...", Wufei softly purred into Trowa's ear, "...but
the rules don't apply to what we do after hours, when everyone else
has settled in for the night." Slowly, he slid out of Trowa's embrace
and cast him a promising glance of events yet to come for that
night, which was enough to bring a low groan of heated
anticipation from his emerald-eyed lovers lips.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
   Back in the cabin's office, the two young men set up for their
first time as campmasters. One of the experienced campmasters,
one of only two female campmasters there, had left Trowa and
Wufei a list of things that needed to be done. The necessary paper
work, such as fire permits, maps, troop and pack rosters, money
envelope's, emergency contacts, short-term evaluation sheets,
and short term camping permits needed to be laid out, the fire hydrants,
dust pans and brooms, and water buckets for the groups staying in
cabins and lean-to's needed to be placed outside on the porch,
and the camp truck keys had to ready at hand for emergencies.
Jeanette had even called the guys two days ahead of time just make
sure they knew exactly what to do. To Wufei, the over-cautious
lady seemed a little nuts about all the preperations, but when he
saw first hand what he and Trowa were dealing with, he
understood why she was so careful in her instructions.
Without her help, both men would have been absolutely lost!
   Luckily, only 3 Boy and Cub Scout troops and one group of
co-ed ROTC's were planning on staying that weekend, so Wufei
and Trowa weren't going to be too busy. Still they wanted to be
sure that they had done everything correctly on Jeanette's list
and followed it as best as possible, making sure that everyone
had all the necessary paperwork for the weekend.
   Having to drive each troop's gear up to each site was another
story, though. Camp rules were that no vehicles other than the
camp truck were allowed the old swinging yellow gate to the campsites,
so as campmasters, Trowa and Wufei had to drive the beaten-up
Ford of a camptruck to each site. If Wufei's poor stomach had turned
back in the cabin, then surely it had done triple somersaults driving
this deathtrap on wheels. The single long seat was so thread-bare that
all that was really left of it was yellowed foam, the window crank for
the drivers side window had long been replaced with a worn
splintering wooden block, the wires for the CB radio, speakers
, and air vents were dangling dangerously low to the floor
of the truck, and the floor itself was rusted so badly near the doors
that, in parts, they could see the ground underneath the truck itself!
If that wasn't bad enough, the inside of the truck looked as it had
never even met with the likes of a can of Endust in about a million
years. PLus, just to make matters even worse, the two bewildered
men found out the hard way that the parking brake did not always
work correctly, as they found themselves chasing after the runaway
truck when they didn't put on the emergency brake, almost running
over a few lone Cub scouts in the process! Luckily, Trowa was able
to leap into the open truck window and slam on the brakes before
the decrepide vehicle crashed into a huge old oak on the side of the path.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

   After spending what seemed like an hour trying to get the camp truck
back down to the parking lot, Wufei and Trowa wearily walked back
into the cabin and fell exhausted into the dusty old office chairs.
Trowa snatched one of the chocolate frosted donuts from the box of
snacks on the table and began to munch wearily at it. Picking up the
box, he reached across the table and offered it to Wufei.
   "Want one?"
   Not one to ever pass up anything chocolate, Wufei snagged
one of the sweet pastries and happily and hungrily devoured it.
Chocolate had, after all, become one of his all time favorite treats!
   Licking the last of the chocolate frosting from his fingertips, Wufei
reached for yet another donut. Trowa sat amazed at the speed in which
Wufei downed the sweetened confection. He himself was still working
on his first one! His wide-eyed gaze was enough to temporarily
pause the Chinese man from chewing, and return the bewildered
gaze of his lover with a confused one of his own.
   "What?!", he asked with a mouthful, around the donut.
Trowa just blinked in response.

<<KNOCK KNOCK!>>

   "Hello?"
   The two turned their gazes in the direction of the new voice.
A bright cocoa-eyed woman with long wavy hair the same soft
color as her eyes [4] was standing at the office cubby hole, with
two children in tow. One was decked out in the full Boy Scout
uniform consisting of a tan button shirt, navy green pants, a red
beret, green knee socks with a red stripe going across the top,
a navy green sash decorated with many patches and pins, and
a pair of well worn hiking boots. The youngest wore dark blue jeans,
an old pair of sneakers, a hufe over-sized bright orange and white
t-shirt with two tiger heads adorning the left shoulder, and a dark
blue and orange baseball cap covering half his head. In his small
arms, he clutched two well-loved stuffed animals,
one a kitten and one a llama.
   "Excuse me?", the lady asked, "Can one of you two gentlemen
help me find out where Troop 191 and Pack 23 are located? My
sons and I are running a bit late, and were told by the ranger that
we should come to find out where the boys troops are."
   "Well, m`aam," Trowa said as he got up and walked over to the
counter near the cubby hole."Let me check here a sec and see if
I can find your troops." He began searching through the piles of
paper on the counter, to no avail. Looking over his shoulder, he
called on Wufei for help.
   "Hey Wu? Where are the campsite papers? I thought I placed
them over here somewhere."
   Wufei rolled his eyes and sighed, wolfing down the rest of
his donut and taking a gulp of water from his bottle. He trodded
up to the other end of the counter. Grabbing a clipboard loaded
down with the correct papers, he slide up next to Trowa, running
his fingers down the sheet.
   "Ummm, which Troop and Pack did you say they were in again,
m`aam?", he asked, wiping the last of the crumbs from his chin.
A small voice answered him.
   "Twoop one niney-one an' Pack tweny-twee!", the young Cub Scout
replied from behind his stuffed animals.
   "They didn't ask you, booger, they asked Mom!", the Boy Scout
harped... obviously the older brother.
   "I'm not a boogew! You'we a boogew!"
   "Are too!"
   "Nuh uh!"
   "Ya huh!"
   "Nu uh!"
   "Ya huh!"
   "Cut it out, you two!", their mother twirled around angrily,
glaring down at the two griping youngsters. The younger boy's
bright brown eyes began to well up with tears.
   "But Mommy, Wobin stawted it!", he whined, pointing a
chubby finger at his brother.
   "You little liar! You're the one who started it!", Robin harped back.
   Gently the mother reached down and took hold of her older
sons shoulder, "Robin, apologize to your brother now!"
   "But Mooooom...!", he whined.
   "Don't you 'but Mom' me, mister! Now be a good example and
apologize to your brother!"
   Wufei and Trowa watched in silent amazement as the older
boy with glasses turned to his younger brother and apologized.
"I'm sorry, Pete.", he mumbled under his breath.
   "That's much better!", his mother said with a quick smile, and
turned back to Trowa and Wufei. She giggled at the expressions
of absolute wonder on their faces. They had never seen a parent be
able to quiet down two energetic kids like that before... and so quickly!
She leaned over the counter a bit and told them her secret.
   "I promised them that if they behaved this weekend that next
weekend I'd take them to Six Flags Great Adventure to ride the
Freefall and the Batman & Robin: Chiller."
   "Yeah, and Wobin awemost wuined it fow us!", little Pete added
. Pete crossed his arms over his chest and stuck his tongue
out at his little brother.
   "Mommy..!", Pete cried.
   She glared down at the little cub scout. He immediately quieted
down and hugged his stuffed animals closer.
   Wufei shook his head, lightly laughing as he checked the
campsite papers again. "Okay, m`aam, Troop 191 is over at
campsite 10A and Pack 23 is at... site 9. They may be over at the
Council Fire Pit right now, meeting with the other two groups and
doing some skits, though. Do you need one of us to show you
where that is?"
   "No, that's alright," she replied, "I know where the pit and 10A
are. I'm sure we can find site 9 too. Thank you, anyway. Oh... and I
know how that campmaster truck is, so we'll walk our stuff up. We
really just have our packs and sleeping bags, anyway."
   "Okay, m`aam! You three have a good night, then!"
   "Thank you, gentlemen! You were very helpful! Goodnight!"
   Little Pete piped up as his mother and brother turned to leave,
"WAIT!"
   "What is it, dear?", his mother sighed as she paused at the door.
   "Mistew Wwama an' Miss Kitten wanna say good night too!",
he beamed as he proudly held out his stuffed toy llama
and kitty to Trowa and Wufei. They just blinked absently
at the two toys in their faces, then up at the young child's
mother and brother.
   "Just play along!", Robin silently mouthed to them. "He
does this all the time!"
   Trowa reached down and took the toys, one in each hand.
"Good night, Mr. Llama," he said, giving the llama's paw a
hearty shake. Then, ever so tenderly, he lifted the kitty's paw and
placed a sweet on it. "...and good night to you too, Miss Kitten.".
He then turned and placed the toys in front of Wufei. "Say good
night, Wu!"
   Wufei gave him a look of 'you MUST be kidding me'. Trowa
just motioned with his eyes towards the near bouncing Little Pete.
Wufei sighed, then quickly patted each toy on the head.
   "Good night, Mr. Llama... good night, Miss Kitten."
   Little Pete beamed as Trowa handed him back his toys.
"Good night, Mistew Campmastew's!". He scooted past his mother,
and followed his brother outside.
   "Cute kid!", Trowa laughed gently.
   The mother laughed happily, shaking her head tiredly.
"Heh heh... yeah, you want them? Nah... they can be pains, but I
love them. I can imagine my life would be absolutely boring without
those two knuckleheads to keep me company. Ah, such is the life of
a parent, eh? Oh well, good night gentlemen!". She pushed
on the screen door and followed her children out into the night.
   Trowa sighed happily. He always did love children. The way they
constantly question everything in the world around them, testing
their boundaries, and learning from their experiences. He had
secretly wished for some of his own some day, but he, sadly, he
knew that could never happen. Still, he wanted a child to call 'son'
or 'daughter', and he knew that there were dozens of beautiful
children in the world that needed a loving home. He thought
many times to bring up the subject with Wufei, of them possibly
adopting a child and becoming a family. He just wasn't sure how
his sloe eyed dragon would take to the thought, so he kept it to
himself. Maybe when the time was right... but just not yet.
   "Trowa?", Wufei waved his hand in front of the dreaming boy's
face to grab his attention. "Tro-love? You in there?"
   "Yes, Wufei... I'm still here," Trowa took Wufei's hand, brushing
the soft skin with his thumb. He placed a delicate kiss on Fei's
fingers, sending a sensous tingle through the Oriental youth
and eliciting a soft moan from his lips. "I was just thinking to myself."
   "What about, angel?"
   "About something I need to talk to you about," Trowa replied,
caressing Wufei's hand over his cheek, "Just not yet, though."
   "Why? Why not now? Is it b..mmmmm," Wufei was immediately
silenced as Trowa pulled him in for a deliciously sweet kiss. All words
lost, he melted into his angel's arms, losing all awareness around him
except for the tall beautiful youth that was sending his heart soaring...
   Slowly, Trowa pulled out of the kiss, tapping the tip of his nose
to the breathless raven-haired boys own. "Not yet, mi amore...",
he whispered, "...not yet.", and stepped out of the room to close
up the cabin for the night.
   Wufei's eyes followed Trowa out the door, his fingers tracing
his lips after his lovers kiss. Worry began to tweak at his heart as he
recalled the twinge of saddness that flowed from Trowa during their
kiss. Even his movements betrayed him. Something has upset Trowa
and not knowing what it was ate at Wufei's heart. He hated to see the
one he loved with all his heart sad. Within the past year, he had seen
Trowa go through pure hell and back with the rape and murder of his
foster sister, Catherine, who had taken him in during the early wars
and became the first family he had ever known. Catherine was a
saint to Trowa, as well as his best friend. It nearly destroyed him
the day he returned to the circus one night for a visit, only to find
his sister brutally mutilated and raped, along with his favorite
lion, Brutus, who's head had been severed. Trowa fell into a
deep bout of depression and on several occasions, had attempted
suicide. Each time, though, he did not succeed, which made him
feel even more of a failure.
   The final time he truely would have succeeded, though, if Wufei
had not shown up in time to hold him back.

   //The air that night had been particularly warm and moist,
so Wufei had decided to take a break from his katas and go
for a walk out by the beach to listen to the relaxing swell of the waves.
The gentle breeze tickled his face as a few silken strands of his hair
had fallen out of its usual ponytail. He tucked the playful tufts
behind an ear and lifted his face to the wind, reveling in the
sweetness of the air around him. He silently decided to himself
that of all the areas that he and his friends had been hidden, this
was the most peaceful place. Cape Cod was such a beautiful
area and it reminded him of the fishing villages he had only seen
and read about in history books, only on a slightly larger scale.
   As the breeze began to pick up a bit, he scanned the horizon of the
water. Even through the darkness, he could see storm clouds
coming onshore and could hear the dull roar of thunder. With one
last quick scan of the swelling waters, Wufei pulled his long silk
shirt over his shoulders and started to head back to the safehouse.
Something made him stop short in his tracks, though.
   Off on the far end of the shoreline, standing out on one of the
jette's, Wufei thought he could make out the shadow of a person.
He walked closer, trying to make out who would be crazy enough
to even be out on the jette's this time of night, and with a storm
brewing in the sky. As he got closer, the outline of the figure
became clearer. The person was obviously tall and slender, but
not a woman. Wufei's heart screamed as he recognized the familiar profile.
   ---Trowa!---
   He ran as fast as his feet could carry him in the direction
of the tall youth, screaming out the other boys name at the
top of his lungs. "TROWA! TROOWAAA!!"
   Trowa did not turn around. The wind had picked up too much
and carried Wufei's shouts away on its spiraling tendrils.
Wufei had to move faster, or her feared he would lose the one
who had secretly silently stolen his heart forever. There was no
way he was going to lose Trowa to death, not if he could help it!
   He finally reached the rocky jette and ran as fast as he could,
slipping reveral times over the slick sharp rocks along the way, his
feet getting sliced in the process. He slipped one last time on a
particularly mossy rock. Wufei tried to get up, but flinched in pain
as he looked down and saw crimson blood streaming from a gash
on his left leg. He had to reach Trowa, though, to stop him from
whatever he was plannning on doing. With one final burst of
energy, Wufei launched himself towards Trowa, just as the Hispanic
youth started to lean forward to tumble into the icy waters below.
   "TROWA!!!," Wufei reached out and grabbed the
waistline of Trowa's jeans, pulling back to safety. He embraced
him tightly from behind around the waist, locking Trowa's arms
to his sides. Trowa struggled to break free, but Wufei's arms held
onto him like steel padlocks, refusing to move.
   "W...Wufei!", Trowa growled, "Let me go!"
   "No, Trowa!"
   "Wufei, let..."
   "NO!!," Wufei screamed. "No way, no how! I will not let you
do this! I will NOT let you throw your life away!"
   Trowa's body began to shake, raspy sobs escaping from him.
Hot tears stung his eyes as he sank to his knees on the jette,
pulling Wufei down with him. The Oriental boy's heart broke as he
sat there holding onto for dear life to the man he loved. He
could think of no way to console the grief stricken Trowa now.
He wished with all his heart and soul that he knew what to do to
take the pain away. He buried his face into Trowa's back and
let his own tears flow as the storm around them grew stronger.
   He knew that he would have to get them both back to the
safehouse before things got worse, so wearily and still in a lot
of pain from the cut on his leg, Wufei pulled Trowa back to his
feet and slowly walked the both of them
back to the safety of the house.//
