Unforgettable Anime Quotes
Ah! My Goddess: The Motion Picture
"The system created by the divine ones segregates every single person into his living assignment in the world, determines his roles and controls them...the melancholy voices of those born into this world have pierced the depths of my heart. I feel the need to do something for them without discriminating against anyone." ~Celestin

Ah! My Goddess the movie was an excellent, excellent movie (it has Sir Bon's seal of approval!). This is probably why I have so many quotes from that film. This one tells us of Celestin's motivation for doing what he did. Poor Celestin, he never truly ever was a bad guy. As a matter of fact, he's a good guy who has been misunderstood.
"If things were to change, do you think you could ever fall in love with me? Or fulfill a dream for which I long? The world is about to change. That's why I'm here now. I've come and this will mean a new beginning for my life" ~Morgan

The fairy princess Morgan Le Fey tells Keiichi this in the nurse's office. To me, the significance of this line is that it reflects Morgan's pain of losing a loved one and being forced to live in a world of despair and through her, it offers a reflection of the world that Celestin is trying to change for what he believes will be a better one.
"I knew I didn't carry enough faith in myself. I am to blame. I was afraid that even if there had been no gate, we would someday go our separate ways, but I have to put that behind me now and live in the present believing in the future." ~Morgan

I believe that the significance of this is the fact that Morgan has finally found hope and a reason to go on. By realizing that there is hope, it signifies that the world, too, still has hope for a better and brighter future for everyone.
"People have the strength to overcome their obstacles-everyone can." ~Belldandy

Belldandy's message of hope-'nuff said!
Appleseed 2004
"What a strange creature is man, who would cage himself so willingly." ~Athena

Indeed. Such is the creature we call man.
Argentosoma
"Happy encounters and bittersweet memories, if there is nothing meaningful in the meeting itself and it's all about having met him, then what would be the true meaning of actually meeting him and the significance of wanting to meet him again?" ~Hattie

This was Hattie's thoughts six years after the incident with the aliens/Frank/Yuri. Space probe Ulysses is about to be launched and here, Hattie is commenting about finally meeting either Frank or Ryu or both again after the passage of six years.
Armitage III: Poly-Matrix
"If humans don't want me, then why did they create me?" ~Naomi Armitage

One simple sentence to sum up Armitage's pain and despair as she and all the other thirds are being hunted down and mercilessly destroyed while trying to find their place in the world.
Azumanga Daioh
"'CUZ I LIKE HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS AND STUFF!" ~Kimura-sensei

It's such a classic Kimura-sensei. He is one interesting character. I chose this one 'cuz it does a good job of representing the insanity of Azumanga Daioh in my opinion.
Banner of the Stars III
"You know Lafiel, what I would miss more than the flowers blooming on my homeworld, the wind blowing through my homeworld, the stars shinning upon my homeworld is the sound of your voice." ~Jinto

The Banner of the Stars series is awesome. Take one part Star Trek, one part elven story, and add a dash of drama and you end up with this series. Although at first glance it doesn't seem like it, it is largely in part a love story between Jinto, a boy burdened by fate with responsibilities, and Lafiel, an alien princess.
Battle Athletes
"Mother...I've tried to catch up to you for so long, but now, I'm gonna pass you!" ~Akari Kanzaki

This is probably Akari's defining moment (in the OVAs anyway). This is when she was running against Lahhri, the previous Cosmo Beauty Champion for the past two years. Akari was not only running against Lahhri, but against the legacy left behind by her mother, a legendary Cosmo Beauty herself. In this instance, not only does Akari finally free herself from the burden of her mother's legacy, but she also surpasses her mother as well.
Black Lagoon
"Do you know what Jesus said in John chapter 5? He said, “Don’t bring me any trouble, bitch!”" ~Edel

How can you not love a nun who shoots people, has a foul mouth, has a tendency to get drunk and scams people because that is what Jesus did according to her?
Bleach
"If I were the rain that bind together the earth and the sky, who in all eternity will never mingle, would I be able to bind the hearts of people together?" ~Orihime

I liked that line because I though it was untypically deep for Orihime's personality and yet so typical of her in a caring way...that and I like it.
Bubblegum Crisis 2040
"Infinite wisdom requires infinite perspective. Only by experiencing each element, each moment separately and in their own time does the beauty of the whole become apparent." ~Galatea

This is what Galatea realized when her mind merged with those of Priss' and came to realize that what she had be trying to do was wrong, that everything has its own place and time and cannot be forced upon.
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion
"If you had the strength, you could live. This is our contract. In return for my gift of power, you must grant one of my wishes. If you enter this contract, you will live as a human, but also as one completely different. Different rules, different time, a different life.... The power of the king will make you lonely indeed. If you are prepared for that, then...." ~CC

This is the first time that CC (pronounced as C2) meets Lelouch, the lost Britannian prince and offers him the power of absolute command and sets everything in motion.
"" ~CC

Daphne of the Brilliant Blue
"I'm dating a psycho!" ~Tsukasa

They thought that Gloria was dying so they got her ideal man out of her and disguised Tsukasa to be close enough and take her on a date. Of course, it wouldn't work out since Gloria is practically insane - to the point that she deliberately drove their car off the road and into the sea!
Dead Leaves
"Yeah, well, having a TV for a head makes you look like an asshole." ~Pandy

This was Pandy's response to Retro saying that the markings over her eye making her look like a panda.
Devil Lady (Devilman Lady)
"I am the Devil! I will rise from hell time and again!" ~Jun

In the world that they lived in, Jun found out the hard way that she cannot truly run away from what she really is and must learn to accept and embrace her nature. As for what that nature is, no one has the right to say what it is except her.
Eureka Seven
"Freedom is something you have to fight for, rather than something you're given. Being free means being prepared to carry that burden." ~Charles Beams

It's true ya know...
Earth Girl Arjuna
"One hot summer day, I died and...I saw it. This star's dying future!" ~Arjuna

...and then all the weirdness in her life began to happen.
El Hazard: The Magnificent World
"This is destiny Makoto. If I had not undertaken this journey, I could never meet you, and that is why I am going - to meet you...because I had nothing until I met you, not even a single memory"
~Ifurita
"Makoto, at long last we meet! I've waited so long for you. This moment has finally arrived after ten thousand years. Through the endless nights I dreamt only of you-you my dear Makoto"
~Ifurita

Why did I choose these two lines from Ifurita? Because it shows the circular pattern and dream like reality that El Hazard has taken. It also proves the depths of Ifurita's love for Makoto. She was willing to throw herself into oblivion for the chance that they would meet. Man-talk about a love that transcends the barriers of time and distance! Ifurita-what a babe!
"Oh shit! Someone else is out of alcohol!" ~Fujisawa-sensei

Man o man it cracks me up every time I hear that. Fujisawa-sensei is easily my favorite character in El Hazard. Perpetually drinking and chain smoking-even while teaching class! He also get urges to go mountain climbing and just leaves (even as his own wedding is about to begin) and prefers to go through harder, riskier routes. Damn, I wish, just once, that I could get a teacher like Fujisawa-sensei!
Elfen Lied
"You suddenly appeared in front of me in this hell. The day that I would get to meet you...I always wanted to apologize to you...I only endured because of that! I kept on living." ~Lucy

Lucy is perhaps one of the ultimate testaments that monsters aren't born that way; we turn them into to it through hatred, prejudice, and intolerance. And like Lucy, the only way to stop created monsters like her is through love, understanding and acceptance.
Fate Stay Night
"Someday, my memories of her will fade. Her voice, her actions – I might forget them as well. But even then, I will always remember that I loved her." ~Emiya Shirou
"It feels so close to me, yet I can't reach it even if I hold out my hands. But even if I can't reach it, there are things that will stay in my heart. Being in the same time and looking at the same sky – if I can remember that, then even if we are far apart, I believe we can still be together." ~Emiya Shirou

A bit melancholic, the bittersweet ending does however feel appropriately good – as if it was all just a wonderful dream. As Bedever mused to himself about Saber - “Dost thou Behold, O Arthur, thy dream's continuation?”
Fruits Basket
"What does it turn to whenever snow melts? It turns to spring!" ~Honda Tohru

Karmie-chan and I both love this quote. For me, I have no idea why I love it. Anyway, it's not an exact quote since it is part of a conversation so it would be too long to put the whole thing here, so here it is in this way!
Fushigi Yuugi
"Don't ever forget that with each step a person is able to take on their own, they have become that much stronger." ~Tamahome

Karma likes this one and I can see why. I think it represent the series well because it is mostly about Miaka's growth. No really, it is!
Gankotsuoh
"Death is certain, the hour is not." ~engraved on the count's pocket watch

Based on Alexander Dumas' Count of Monte Cristo, this quote is both obvious and true. I guess, to me, it says that instead of trying to prevent something that cannot be prevented, it would be better to do something meaningful in the meantime.
Gatekeepers 21
"I wanted to dream about soaring-soaring high up in the sky far above all the clouds. More than anything else, I wanted to dream of flying so high that I could go all the way to the moon and then I would touch my cheeks to its beautiful white face!" ~Miu Manazaru
"Your dream-I can make it come true...Yes, if I'm with you, I'm sure you can do it and I'll fly like the bird I could never become!" ~Ayane Isuzu

This is Miu and Ayane's hope amidst a city of corruption and deceit. This is perhaps the reason why they could keep on going even through the overwhelming darkness of the human heart that they lived under. Gatekeepers 21 is the OVA of Gatekeepers set 30 years after Gatekeepers ended. It's a lot darker and a whole lot less comedic.
Genshiken
"You don't just strip her, YOU RAPE HER!!!" ~Madarame

In this scene, they are talking about H-games and materials.
Ghost in the Shell
"The time has come to cast aside these bonds and to elevate our consciousness to a higher plane. It is time to become a part of all things!" ~Project 2501, The Puppet Master

The notorious Puppet Master came all the way to Section Nine to meet Makoto Kusanagi and ask her to merge herself with him, aww...ain't it romantic? Well no, not really, but this is the critical moment when the hunt for The Puppet Master comes to an end and where he and Major Kusanagi becomes one being and evolves to the next level.
Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence
"Life and death come and go like marionettes dancing on a table. Once their stings are cut, they easily crumble." ~writing on the wall

Something that Togusa read from a wall. I think that it perfectly describes the existence of several characters in the movie.
"Humans are nothing but the thread from which the dream of life is woven. " ~Kim

I just like the way it sounds I guess.
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
"Oh God...how...powerless we are..." ~Tachikoma

This was what Batou's Tachikoma said as it was about to die trying to protect Batou. When the remaining Tachikomas were disarmed and sent to do different jobs, they still got together again when they heard what had happened to Section 9 to help out Batou out of their own will. Perhaps it is the realization that they are about to achieve their desire to experience death conflicting their desire to keep on protecting Batou.
Giant Robo
"The future has shown us with its glorious brilliance the time to seize our destiny and conquer all our fear is now! In ancient times, man rubbed sticks together and created fire, then they slaughter the whales and battled one another for oil. After that, came the atomic age. In every chapter of our history, we've danced with danger. But now, for the first time in existence, we will be delivered from fear. Finally, we will escape the prison of our illusions and the beautiful night will embrace us all. It's already too late! I will live by this and I will die by this!" ~Professor Von Vogler

Professor Von Vogler's motivation for doing what he has done and set the events of Giant Robo into motion. Of course, we later learn that this was slightly misunderstood by those who would carry on his will.
"Listen boy, I'm not doing this for you, your friends, or anything you believe in. I'm not your hero nor your savior and as soon as he's out of the way, I'm setting my sights right back on you! The only reason I'm doing this is because I will not leave the fate of the world in the hands of a punk like him! The future will be decided by either Big Fire or the IPO's Experts of Justice. Am I wrong? Am I? Am I...Taiso?" ~Alberto

Alberto's last words as he sacrifices himself to give Daisaku and Giant Robo a chance to finish off Genya. Even a big bad guy like him can be so awesome given the proper motivation!
Girls Bravo
"Can't I help humanity AND wear pants?" ~Yukinari

Yukinari gets suckered into dressing up in drag by Kirie on a combination of guilt trip and ego boosting about the fate of humanity resting on him dressing up as an image girl to do an MC job.
Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz
"History is much like an endless waltz. The three beats of war, peace and revolution continue on forever." ~Marimeia Kushranada

It's a simplified generalization of the history of men, but quite true in my opinion.
Happy Lesson: The Final
"Be it that I slumbered whilst thinking of my beloved that thou dost appeared in my dreams? Had I known it was but a dream, I wouldst not have awakened." ~Mutsuki

This is the poem that Mutsuki is teaching about during the final three part OVA and it explains it very well. You see, the final three OVA episodes were about Mutsuki's first love and how her lost love has affected the people around her from the other teachers to Chitose to Nanakorobi.
Hayate, the Combat Buttler
"Intruder, your life ends here! But, of course, you're not really going to die." ~Katsura-sensei

Hayate is awesome, it has so much spoofs that the only one I can think of that beats it in that department is Keroro-gunsou and Excel Saga. This was just before Katsura-sensei does a spoof of of Goro. Of course, it's still pretty damned funny all on its own.
Hell Girl
"When a person is cursed, two graves are dug." ~Ai Enma

Is there a way to get the payment in installments instead?
Heroic Prince Arislan
"To live is to undertake a journey - no, to undertake a journey is to live. To face the wind or to follow it, all journeys lead to the gates of death...The light in which all journeys are taken is deceptive-not hopeful, but sorrowful. And the struggle never ends-everywhere on the earth is fleeting life. We are blown by the wind. The words we write in the sand disappear and finally, when we are swallowed by the sea we do not hear the waves. The humblest of creatures must face these dreadful barriers. No-not barriers, but challenges rather..." ~Gieve

Gieve thinks about what life is meant to be and is rather appropriate for the series. Heroic Prince Arislan is really a journey of growth for Arislan despite the fact that most of the story is focused on the struggle between Palsa and the Lucitanian.
Honey and Clover
"Ah! So that's what it looks like - someone falling in love for the first time." ~

Inuyasha
"My meeting you was no coincidence. It's more than that!" ~Kagome Higurashi

Really! It's not! Think about it, Kagome IS the reincarnation of Kikyo (even though she is somewhat jealous of her). And even after 500 years, she still manages to meet with Inuyasha, Kikyo's love, and be with him.
The Irresponsible Captain Tylor
"Tylor, you magnificent fool..." ~Ru Baraba Dom

This one was taken from the OVA’s-the last one as a matter of fact. This was during the scene when the Hizen ceremoniously destroys the Soyokaze. I think it is a good quote for several reasons. First of all, Tylor really was a fool, but the kind of fool that made those around him believe in him and a future. Secondly, it also represented how Dom, perhaps even the entire Raalgon forces respected and hated Tylor and the Soyokaze as they all give a final salute to the Soyokaze while it was blowing up. Finally, I also think that the destruction of the Soyokaze meant an end to a chapter. It was the end of their time living in a dream and signal that they now have to live in reality (even though they can still carry a small part of that dream), it is the end of their youths and the beginning of their grown up, responsible life. Most of all, I think it also meant a new chapter between the Raalgon empire and the humans.
Jubei-chan 2: Revenge of the Siberia Yagyu
"The way of the sword lies in one's heart. As long as you have your heart, you can live even without the sword. " ~Yagyu Jubei Mutoyoshi

Or as I interpret it - "To master the world around one's self, one must first master their own selves."
Kanon
"A dream - I'm looking at a dream. A dream I see everyday - an endless dream. The day the dream didn't end, when was it? Was it a long time ago or was it just few minutes ago? The answer to it must lie in the dream...in the time you didn't realize that if it's passing, you just only wait." ~Ayu

The reason I chose this is that Kanon itself has a dream like quality (literally). The time that Yuuichi spent in that town seemed almost like a dream and as the series was about to end, it's as if he was trying hard not to wake up. Then, there are the people that he meets along the way - people who are locked in eternity it would seem, dreaming the same dream that only he could free and allow them to move forward. And then, finally, there is Ayu who literally wakes up at the very end from a long, endless dream.
Kimagure Orange Road
"I, Kasuga Kyosuke, am living the best years of my life!" ~Kasuga Kyosuke

KOR is another all time favorite for me. Sometimes, when I look back on it, I still can't believe that I used to watch this without the subtitles even though I don't speak Japanese. Anyway, this line is here because anyone who watches this can easily tell that it's from KOR and it's not because Kyosuke tells his name in the quote, but because this is what he says at the intro of every episode.
"In the summer that I finally caught you my angel..." ~Kasuga Kyosuke

Kyosuke says this during the second movie. This is when all ambiguities in Kyosuke's relationship with Madoka have been erased and Kyosuke already knows what kind of future awaits them.
Last Exile
"What lies in the farthest reaches of the sky?"
"That which will guide the lost child to her mother's arms-Exile"
"The waves that dye the land gold"
"The blessed breath which nurtures life-A land of wheat"
"The path the angels descend upon"
"The path of great winds-The Grand Stream"
"What lies in the farthest depths of memory?"
~Claus Valca
"The place where all are born and where all will return-A blue star"
~Alvis Hamilton

These are the four mysterions guarded by four houses that control Exile and Alvis' response to each one.
"White clouds streaming by, cold winds touching our cheeks...up here in these blue skies, we can fly higher and higher, and farther and farther." ~Claus Valca

The resolution to all things as the skies that Lavie and Claus loved so much has returned or rather, finally became the place of endless freedom that they believed it to be.
Le Petite Potrait Cossette
"If someone were to drown in the seas for my sake, then I would be released from stone and return to life...to life once more. But if I were to return to life one day, which would give me the most important thing - I would then cry alone. I would cry longing for my stone. Of what use would my blood be even if it were to ripen like wine for it would not be able to bring back the one who loved me most from the water's depth." ~Cossette

Which reminds me of another paradox within fairy tales that was presented in Princess Tutu - would Sleeping Beauty, cursed to sleep and dream forever, have preferred to be awakened from her peaceful slumber if she had a choice in the matter?
Legend of the Galactic Heroes
"In every age, in every place, the deeds of men remain the same." ~opening

In here, the history of men, of humanity is a history of war and strife...and it's all true!
Like the Cloud, Like the Wind
"Maybe I made a mistake entrusting the dreams of men to those floating clouds." ~Konton

Nearing the end of his journey, Konton regrets what he has helped unleash. From his simple suggestion to create a rebellion to alleviate boredom, he changed the course of history by causing an avalanched that put an end to a dynasty.
Love Hina
"Memories - they can sometimes become vague and foggy and there are times when they disappear altogether. Therefore, because there are many things I don't want to lose track of, I will record everything in here for the sake of those moments that should not be forgotten" ~Haruka reading excerpts form Keisuke Urashima's diary

This statement, taken from the Moe episode (19) feels so nostalgic to me. It almost seem to invoke a memory from long ago that we can't be sure if it really exists or not and that is the reason why I like it so much.
Macross '84: Do You Remember Love?
"I sing this song for all mankind!" ~Lynn Minmay

This is what Minmay says just before she sings her song as all hell breaks loose and turns the tide for the human race. A historic event because we now know that galaxy spanning alien armada’s hell bent on the destruction of Earth for no apparent reason can be stopped just by a bimbo pop star singing a single song filled with human emotion. Whenever Earth is ever placed under attack by aliens in the future, we now know what we must do!
Macross Frontier
"Hatred shall burn in its infernal glory." ~Grace

or as I like to think of it, "may hatred burn forever in all its infernal glory!" Seriously though, more than love or creativity, hatred makes us human and is probably the biggest motivator for humans to improve as a race.
Martian Successor Nadesico
"Those unforgettable days, for them I live" ~Omoikane

Why did I pick this? Well, why not? A lot of the series are somewhat nostalgic (the Gekigengar 3 and 5 shows) even though most of it is meant as a parody. It just seems to come out that way to me - that and what Ruri tells the crew at the final episode made me decide on this.
"Idiot" ~Ruri Hoshino

Who is Ruri? Why, she is the Nadesico's adorable 12 year old Science Officer. If you are wondering why I placed this in here, then you have NEVER seen a single episode of Nadesico. Why do I say that? Because Ruri calls her crewmates idiots in almost every single episode. Sometimes more than once and almost always to their face. Rather funny actually since Ruri seems to be the only logical person out of the whole crew.
Martian Successor Nadesico: Prince of Darkness
"The stars glimmers as the hearts of people" ~Ruri Hoshino

I suppose that she meant that people's heart changes as easily and as much as the stars twinkle in the night. I just though it sounds pretty kewl.
Masquerade
"Living forever means that the suffering of life also continues forever." ~Sakura Hiraga

Sakura is the Hiraga clan's immortal ancestor who is forever tormented by the thought that the price of her immortality came at the expense of her descendants all dying at an early age.
The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi
"I have no interest in ordinary humans. If there are any aliens, time travelers, sliders, or espers here, come join me. That is all." ~Suzumiya Haruhi

Ok, as of the first episode, the SOS Brigade has a magic wielding alien, a time traveler, and a future esper. I guess that would make Kyon the resident Slider?
"What is this? Where are we? Why did you bring me here? Why are you l-locking the door? What are you..." ~Asahina Mikuru

This is what she said upon getting forcefully "recruited" by Haruhi into her SOS brigade.
Mobile Suit Gundam: 08th MS Team
"I do hope that you can forgive me Aina. Please know that I never hated you." ~Gineas Sahalin
"Farewell Gineas, I loved you!" ~Aina Sahalin

These are what Aina and Gineas said as Aina, tired of constant battles and death, leaves her brother and his dreams of glory to be with Shiro, a soldier and an officer on the opposite side of the war. I don’t know why, but I just love these lines. Something about them and how they are said that I just can’t explain.
Mushishi
"Do not allow yourself to be blinded by fear or anger. Everything is only as it is." ~Nui

Nui's final advice to Ginko before she vanished herself. Nui was the Mushishi that sort of kinda trained Yoki (Ginko's name before he became a Mushishi himself).
Neon Genesis Evangelion
"I mustn’t run away! I mustn’t run away! I mustn’t run away!" ~Shinji Ikari

To those who have seen Evangelion, this line is extremely familiar and most often sends near irresistible urges to kill Shinji. Why? Because Shinji is whiny little piece of turd that has been given human form, that's why! So his dad doesn't care about him-so his mom died when he was very young-so frickin' what? His life is more than made up by getting to be the pilot of a kick-ass "robot" that can easily destroy the world, lives with two gorgeous babes (even if one of them IS a total bitch), has steady income from being in a Government position, etc...So what the frickin' hell else does he want? A little sympathy? Sympathy is for wussies boy, now git yer sorry be-hind outta here before I gives ya a whuppin'
"The fate of destruction is also the joy of rebirth!" ~SEELE
"Through indiscriminate death and through prayer, we will return to our original state and our souls will be at peace" ~SEELE
"The beginning and the end are one and the same" ~Lawrence Keel

Taken from the movie, these lines shows the motivation of SEELE. They sought to bring about the end of all things so that everything may renew again, but without flaws this time around.
"As long as one person still lives...it shall be proof eternal that mankind ever existed" ~Yui Ikari and Prof. Fuyutsuki

Taken from that one scene with Professor Fuyutsuki, Yui Ikari and baby Shinji sitting underneath the shades of a great tree in a nameless place on a perfectly blue day. This one scene just seems so nostalgic-so timeless. As if it exists within genetic memory. This more than anything is probably why I chose this line by Professor Fuyutsuki.
Night Walker
"What is the price of eternal life? To be unable to walk in the sun ever again - to part with complete finality from the world in which you've lived all your life never to return for all eternity." ~Shido

Pretty much sums up the main characters Shido and Riho. They are both struggling with the gift of immortality that their vampiric curse gives them and the consequences of knowing that they will outlive everyone else they know.
"One day in the summer, when the warm sunlight pierced the transparent breeze, you disappeared without a trace. I know we will never meet again under the blue sky and, yet there you are still smiling out at me from somewhere deep within the shining screen" ~Shunichi

Not really relevant line coming from Shunichi, one of Riho's friends who is secretly in love with her. I just thought that it was a pretty good line-very nostalgic.
Ninja Scroll
"They are dead - all dead in Shimoda village!" ~Sachiko's daughter

I don't know why but, I just think that this one scene is plain awesome. Hell, maybe I just like seeing corpses walking around giving warnings to everyone else. On second thought, that is a creepy thought!
Oh My Goddess!
"I want you to be my girlfriend forever!" ~Keiichi Morisato

Keiichi was just trying to order takeout and gets a real live goddess who was willing to grant him any one wish instead. Thinking that it was a practical joke made by his sempais, he makes that wish and gets a permanent girlfriend who also doubles as a doormat! Belldandy in the manga is sooo much better than in the OVAs. If you liked the OVAs, go get the mangas kiddies!
"I am NOT a kid! Nyaaaah!!!" ~Skuld
"Ice creeeaaammm!!!" ~Skuld

Skuld is Belldandy and Urd-sama's little sister, goddess of the future, Ice Cream "connoisseur" and a certifiable mecha freak. These lines are extremely typical of Skuld.
One Piece
"Knowing yourself, knowing the world, surpass this sword, surpass me. Until that time comes, you are not allowed to lose, you are not allowed to die. I will wait for you as the greatest swordsman in the world!" ~Mihouku, the man with hawk-like eyes

Not very accurate, but it still sounds pretty damned good. Here Migfor (Mihouku?) tells this to Zorro after he defeats Zorro and recognizes that there really is something more to Zorro than bravado and that he genuinely wants to become the greatest swordsman in the world. Thus, he promises this to Zorro and tells him that he will wait for him to challenge him again and take the position of "Greatest Swordsman in the World."
"The world has not yet heard our answer" ~Dragon

Okay, so maybe it is not accurate but what can I do-I was dealing with a Hong Kong fansub. Y'all do realize what THAT means right? It means crappy English translations, that's what it means! Anyway, Dragon is referring to the age of pirates in the world with this quote.
"There is no mistake! It's Pirate Hunter Roronoah Zoro. He's cleaning our floors the fiend!" ~Random Marine

Yes, a fiendish man does come to your house and cleans your floor for you when you don't want it cleaned! I thought that it was pretty funny. Here, Zoro got guilt tripped into taking a job in the Marine base to repay something he broke and random Marine peon A and B recognized him when he was using three mops to clean. More than that though, if he is such an evil man like they think he is, then shouldn't what went through their minds have been "Why would a famous and dangerous man be cleaning our dingy floor?" first?
Ouran High School Host Club
"You rich bastards!" ~Haruhi

Poor Haruhi - and I do mean poor. She's the only poor kid in a school full of rich brats who have never had to count their meals!
Princess Mononoke
"The trees cry out as they die, but you cannot hear them. I lie here. I listen to the pain of the forest and feel the ache of the bullet in my chest and dream of the day when I will finally crunch that gun woman's head in my jaws...San is my daughter. She is of the wolf tribe. When the forest dies, so does she...I caught her human parents defiling my forest. They threw their baby at my feet as they ran away. Instead of eating her, I raised her as my own. Now my poor, ugly, beautiful daughter is neither human nor wolf." ~Moro

Moro, the wolf god, talks about her fears of what the future might bring, especially with the selfish destruction wrought by human hands and the fate that lies in store for her human daughter who can never belong to either world.
Princess Tutu
"There is happiness for those who accept their fate, there is glory for those who resist their fate."
~Edel

Well, the characters in Princess Tutu have been trying to do one or the other almost the entire time. This was Edel talking to Fakia who has been trying to change the fate that was in store for him. I figured that it was very appropriate as a representative for the whole series.
RahXephon the Movie
"The individual exists because there is a point of reference to identify itself" ~Haruka

It's true, kinda like without a mirror, you can never know what you look like. It that same manner, we need other people to be able to create our own individual personalities.
"The beginning exists for the end and the end exists for the beginning." ~Quon

...So what sake does the middle parts exists for? Just kidding. I guess what it's trying to say is that all things must have a proper birth and death and that nothing is exempted from this cycle. On the side note, doesn't this (as well as many other quotes) remind you of a certain movie about the world's end. It starts with evan and ends with gelion.
Record of Lodoss War, The
"There once was a boy who dreamed of being a hero, who sincerely believed in the battle to banish darkness from a world of light. But light and darkness are equals and where one exist, so to must the other. When the boy finally realized this, that was when he started the path to becoming a true hero" ~Narrator

Pretty much a dead on description of Parn, the main character of Lodoss War and his journey from being an idealistic boy to a seasoned warrior and hero.
Rurouni Kenshin
"You can train a dog with food, you can buy a person with money, but there isn't a man alive able influence the wolves of Mibu! Some things will never change. A wolf will always be a wolf, the Shinsen Gumi will always be the Shinsen Gumi, and a manslayer will always be a manslayer!"~Goro Fujita, also known as Hajime Saito

I believe that this sum up what Saito is really all about. That and he also happens to be one of my favorite Rurouni Kenshin characters.
Saber Marionette J
"Just because someone holds you doesn't mean that it's love. Just because someone is kind to you doesn't means that it's love!" ~Tiger

So sad, so sad. Hey, even robots have feelings too you know! They too are people! Wait - no they're not!
Samurai X (Rurouni Kenshin 1st OVA series)
"The moon pierced down on the diseased world. There is no cure for the disease. An entire race falls mindlessly into destruction. Not even a man of colossal power may be able to prevent the inevitable. Death no longer terrifies men. The smell of blood is as common as the smell of white plums, so he creates slavery and savagery which surpasses the horrors of dying. These can only be fought with more bloodshed and the cycle never ends. My sword is guided by the reasoning of Hiten Mitsurugi, but when all is said, a sword is a tool for destruction not salvation. The only way I can retain my humanity is to bury its victims." ~Seijiro Hiko
"Murder is the only art a swordsman may practice. No ornamental words can change that. You want to protect people with murder? You'll slaughter legions so that a few may live. Many years, long before you were born, my sword was tearing asunder the lives of men. Yes, all of those men were evil, but they were human beings first and foremost, Kenshin. The world you ardently desire to enter will not know what to do with you. It will deceive you into believing that you are saving lives even as you destroy them. You will accept these lies all the while, your hands will be stained with the worst of offenses." ~Seijiro Hiko

Pretty much describes why Seijiro Hiko no longer fights and why he wishes to live the rest of his life in seclusion.
Samurai X: Reflections (Rurouni Kenshin 2nd OVA series)
"You cannot run. You cannot escape the blood when you have slain so many. You can only live and die and all that must be by the sword!" ~Kenshin Himura quoting Shaku Arai

This was what Shaku Arai, the master swordsmith who had become infamous as a man who was obsessed with making sword that kills well instead of sword that cuts well. The Bakamatsu was over and Kenshin was about to vanish to fulfill his vow to Tomoe to never kill again when the revolution is over. Basically, Shaku Arai is telling Kenshin that he cannot just abandon the sword. To do so with be a great dishonor to all whose blood he had spilled in paving a new future for a better Japan. This was also when he was handed the Sakabatsu (reversed blade sword).
"I knew then...I knew that the world needed him and that I couldn't change his way of life - that it wasn't mine...it wasn't mine to change. But even though I knew it...even though I knew it, I wanted to chase him, to somehow keep him." ~Kaoru Himura

This was what Kaoru felt and realized when Kenshin bid her farewell to go to Kyoto and face the ghost of the revolution's past. She realized that no matter how much she tries to protect him from his inner demons, she cannot. She can only be his spiritual support and watch him face his battles from the sidelines.
Serial Experiments Lain
"If you aren't remembered, then you never existed." ~Arisu

Which is what happens to Lain (willingly) in the end.
Shakugan no Shanatan
"By the way, I'm hungry ~de arumasu~.." ~Willhelmina
"Grilled beef lunch set." ~Tiamat
"I prefer pork ginger of grilled beef ~de arimasu~." ~Willhelmina
"Hooray pork!" ~Tiamat
"Roger." ~Willhelmina

I just thought that it was an amusing take on Willhelmina. Shakugan no Shanatan itself is just a parody on Shakugan no Shana, but still, it is a pretty damned funny take on the way the Willhemina is and the conversation itself is funny in a bizarre sort of way.
Shamanic Princess
"Some things are real and some things are false, can't you tell the difference?" ~Sara
"You haven't changed after all these years. Still a spoiled brat, but the kindest person of all. I love you Tiara-that's why I can't forgive you!" ~Sara

The whole time you really can't tell is the Sara that appears before them is really Sara or the Throne of Yord. In the end, we find out that they are both the same-the Sara and the Throne of Yord is the same thing! I chose the first line because of this and the second one because it signifies the bond between Tiara and the human part of the Throne of Yord/Sara.
Shinkon Gattai Godanner
"Stars in heaven, flowers on earth, love for people - the world is all connected, one cannot fight by himself." ~Anna's father

Slayers, The
"Oh great, it's a kid! I thought I was rescuing a babe, a luscious damsel in distress not some flat chested little girl" ~Gourry Gabriev

Heh-heh. Gourry can sometimes (ok, a lot of times) crack me up. This was when he and Lina first met. Please note that Lina's flat chest is the butt of many jokes in the Slayers continuity.
Slayers Next
"Now that is a secret!" ~Xellos

Ah Xellos! Good old Xellos! Easily one of my favorite characters. He can be so cool AND annoying at the same time. That quote is his standard reply to almost anything - no seriously! I mean Lina could probably ask him why the sky is blue and that's what he'll say! Also, did I mention that Xellos is one awesome character?
Slayers Try
"I know that we can be foolish and make mistakes and we get hurt so easily. But with each mistake, we improve ourselves and with each wound, we don't want to be hurt again. We keep moving on. We cherish the past, the present, and the future." ~Lina
Inverse
"The world you want can't be built after destruction. we build it everyday-step by step!" ~Lina Inverse

These words uttered by Lina fits the third season of Slayers purrfektly. Slayers Try was all about vengeance, redemption and trying to find one's place in life and in the world despite your past. That was what both Valgaav and Fillia have been searching for all through out the series (minus the vengeance part for Fillia). That is why I believe that they describe Slayers Try so well.
Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki
"Hey, don't hurt yourself. I'll do it for you!" ~Ryoko

One of the most memorable lines for me in the first episode of the first OVA series of Tenchi Muyo. Not only that, it's spoken by Ryoko also!
Tenchi Muyo! Tenchi Universe
"We are having fun aren't we? Everyday here is like a dream. I really hope it's going to be like this forever." ~Ryoko

Ah Ryoko-my blue haired, golden eyed goddess in red and black! Yes, Ryoko WAS, IS and ALWAYS WILL BE my favorite character in Tenchi, but besides that, I think that this line suites the TV series most of all. Just like what Ryoko tells Tenchi, they are living a wonderful dream of a life and just as Ryoko wanted it to be, the carnival seems to go on and on. Hell, the whole series is designed that way!
Tenchi Forever: Tenchi Muyo in Love 2
"What do you think created this world? Not science, not magic - it's the power of my heart!" ~Haruna
"Let the memory fade away until there is nothing left but a warm feeling in your heart." ~Haruna

Not only do our hearts guide us as Tenchi's guided him to Ryoko, it shapes us and the world in which we live in. In our hearts lies intangible things that cannot be taken away from us. Even as we forget them, they still remain there out of sight, helping shape and mold the shape of our hearts.
Those Who Hunt Elves
"Ever since that day in the rain, I’ve been looking for you. Of course, at first I was looking for you because I was going to have you killed. I mean, I’m the prince. Nobody talks to me like that! But now that I’ve seen you naked, I think you’ve got a great rack. I think we could hit it off. What do you say?" ~the Prince

Sometimes when ADV changes the lines when they dub it in English, it makes no sense why they did that. Sometimes though, it makes it hella funnier. This is one of those instances.
Tower of Druaga ~Sword of Uruk~, The
"Praise be to Gilgamesh, huh?" ~Cumu

Man, that was one scene that really felt bittersweet. Dude, was completely disillusioned at this point that he'd rather stay behind in a tower of death to live with his ghostly sister who dies years ago.
Trigun
"The choices we make in life have unlimited possibilities." ~Rem Saverem

And with that unlimited possibility that comes from those choices also comes unlimited ramifications that can result from those same choices. The slightest pebble that you decide to kick away might easily become a rockslide!
"We should have died a very long time ago, you and I, the instant we fell upon this sandy land without pain, without sorrow. Now the schedule has merely been set back. The end is near. It is time to embrace it. That is why...that is why I must end it. End it now!" ~Legato Bluesummers

Legato's ending soliloquy. This one comes form episode 24. The one where Legato forces Vash to break his oath to never kill by forcing him to decide whether to kill him or watch Meryl and Milly die. I really like this quote, but then again, people say that I have an obsession with the subject concerning the philosophy of death.
Twelve Kingdoms
"I want to see what kind of kingdom the person who spoke of her own foolishness will create." ~Shoukei

Shoukei, former princess of the kingdom of Hou, tells this to Rakushun after Rakushun finally helps her realize how foolish she was and that being a ruler means more than just having a life of privilage. It also means responsibility to the people much personal sacrifice. She wants to know what kind of kingdom Youko, who already knows of that tremendous burden and responsibility, can create.
Vampire Hunter D
"Because I am a dunpiel. I don't get to have a life-not like yours" ~D

This was D's response when asked why he keeps doing what he does. Pretty insightful to his character I suppose.
Voices of the Distant Stars
(Hoshi no Koe)
"Time is so generous to us and, yet it still such a cruel thief!" ~Mikako Nagamine
"We are far, far, very, very far apart, but it might be that thoughts can overcome time and distance." ~Mikako Nagamine

Mikako and Noboru are two friends who grew up together and found themselves separated after middle school. These two lines pretty much sums up their regret and their hopes for the path that their destinies have taken them. Hoshi no Koe is an excellent story and I love it so!
Wings of Honneamis
"Can anyone here me? I'm the first man in space. If you look up, well, maybe you'll see it. Or at least please listen. We've left the oceans and climbed above the mountains. I'm flying. We've found the untouched realm of God. You have to look now, it's your only chance. Nothing is here yet, not even air or water to ruin. Soon the next man will follow to touch it, and another, and in all the rush, we may again destroy it. Maybe our killing comes from the madness of being confined. Please listen, there's no more reason to kill because we don't have any more borders now! Can anyone hear me? If you can hear me, then pray. The humblest of all things, the most noble – pray for each step you take. Make a path that is safe so that those who follow you will never stumble. Dear God, please give us your mercy - mercy for we are lost. Forgive the irresponsible, the trivial men who beg you from the dark for the forgiveness of your light." ~Shirotsugue Lahdatt

What can be more epic than the first speech delivered from the space, the final frontier? Another quote that reminded me of this comes from MGS3: Snake Eater's The Boss. Shirotsugue, instead of talking about the majesty of space that is now before him, sees the world below him instead of the endlessness above him and realizes that the world that he comes from is so infinitesimally small and insignificant when compared to the rest of the universe that all of our selfishness and greed are extremely petty in light of the majesty that we are willing to sacrifice and destroy in its name.
X
"If you ever meet my brother or Kamui, tell them both that I love them and that the future isn't decided yet!" ~Kotori Monou
"In this world, there is no such thing as "absolute!" ~Hokuto Sumeragi

it's part of X's plot. Through out the whole series, everyone believes that the future is already set and nothing that anyone can do can avert it. It seems that Kotori is the only who believes in a future that is decided by one's own self.
XXXHolic
"Our relationship has already been formed. No matter how trivial a meeting and the incidents that follow may seem, a relationship is made. Even if it is just for a short amount of time, a knot that has been tied does not unravel. It means that during your lifetime, every incident that passes has meaning. The meeting between you and I also has meaning, so remember it." ~Ichihara Yuuko

Nothing is a mere coincidence, all is as it was meant to be - especially in the world that Yuuko lives in.
Yamamoto Yohko, Starship Girl (OVA)
"That's alright, I don't have one (an obligation) either, but do we really need a reason?" ~Yamamoto Yohko

It's from the dance scene of the 3rd episode of the second OVA series. It's just a lovely scene...to the point that it almost seems out of place in the episode.
Zettai Shonen
"This world is far more complicated, rich and full of mystery than people think." ~homeless artist

Or there is more to the world that surrounds us than what we force it to be...that the world does not exist solely for the convenience of men.
