Episode 102- Bourei ni Osuwareta Yorouzoku
The Wolf Demon Tribe attacked by a Zombie
Amy Ishida |
Version Reviewed: Japanese
Reviewed By: Amy Ishida
Opening: Grip! By Every Little Thing
Ending: Shinjitsu no Uta by Do As Infinity
Summary:
Inuyasha and his companions are following a strong evil presence, which thought must be Naraku, towards the northeast. At this moment, a zombie-like youkai referred to as bourei has been terrorizing the mountains and has stepped into the wolf tribe territory. Ayame and her tribe are on the run and seeking Kouga for help. She ended up finding Inuyasha and his companions and informed them about the story of the bourei. At this point, we’re introduced to the bourei, Kyoukotsu, learning he desires the shikon shards, has one in his forehead, and Kohaku works for him. He finds Kouga and tries to take his shikon shards and his life. During the fight, he informs Kouga that he is a human and rose back from the grave much more powerful thanks to the shikon shard he possesses. When Kyoukotsu was about to devour Kouga, he punched into Kyoukotsu’s forehead and drew the shikon shard out. Kyoukotsu turned into skeletons on the spot but a Saimyoushou came and took Kyoukotsu’s shikon shard away proving Naraku was connected to this event. The scene switches to another new character, Jakotsu, speaking with Kohaku about Kyoukotsu’s death saying he was the weakest out of “us”.
New characters:
Kyoukotsu
Jakotsu
Opinions:
This was a great first episode to start the Shichinintai saga. Even though the first member was short lived, it gave a general idea of what they were and how powerful they can get. This episode also strayed away from focusing on Inuyasha and his companions and focused on the wolf tribe. I thought it was a great way to contrast it being the first episode to a new saga in the series. It didn’t focus on the main characters to open up this new saga but rather on the side characters. It was more interesting to watch and gave you a fresh start kind of feeling. Kouga and Ayame’s relationship is pretty much still on the same level but you see them having to deal with the problems between them. It also leaves you hanging on two occasions. One, the fact that is it now proven Naraku was connected to this but how and what are his intentions. Two, the phrase of Jakotsu mentioning Kyoukotsu was the weakest out of “us” referring there are actually more people like them. Jakotsu’s character also comes out a bit at the end of the episode and it adds a bit of comedy to it. Overall, it was a great fresh start to the new Shinchinintai saga.
Rating:
10/10
Like I have mentioned, it was a great fresh start and a wonderful idea to contrast the theme.

Now reviewing: Episode 102 (Japanese v.)
Summary:
Well, I’m not sure who decided to stick Ayame, and every other member of
the yorozoku (wolf demon tribe, it is) that have ever before appeared
into this episode, but there they are, and they seem to be fleeing a
being that eats every living creature it comes across, and appears to
be neither human nor demon. It also smells like a dead person, so
basically, it’s something akin to a zombie or specter. This leads the
Inuyasha-gang to the conclusion that it must be something that has been
resurrected by Naraku, and indeed, that is confirmed by Kohaku’s
appearance near the specter, “Kyoukotsu,” whose means of resurrection
was clearly the shard of the shikon jewel currently imbedded in his
forehead.
Anyway, this all eventually ends up as a battle between Kouga and
Kyoukotsu, which also leads to the oh-so-shocking revelation that yes,
Kyoukotsu is a human after all. Kouga eventually wins the battle by
extracting Kyoukotsu’s shikon shard, but it is taken away by one of
Naraku’s insects. Let’s all do the “saimyoushou are freaking
everywhere!” dance. ^^;;
So, anyway, this episode concludes with a short dialogue between Kohaku
and…Jakotsu! This conversation basically consistes of Jakotsu asking if
Inuyasha is hot and Kohaku being like: “what? -_- ,” but still…Jakotsu!
New Characters:
Kyoukotsu
Jakotsu (Yay! OK, so has everyone gotten that I like him now?)
Review:
Well, I’m not a really big fan of this episode. A lot of it was just
running around and stating the obvious, and most of the characters
(even the Inuyasha-gang, sheesh) seemed to appear in this episode for
those purposes alone. Also, the flow doesn’t really feel right to me.
You may be able to tell from the summary, but this episode droned on
about Kyoukotsu forever and then just starts jumping around. Very
annoying. Still, it provides a lot of the basic facts that will be
needed for the Shichinintai arc. I think that it’s better to have a
slow opening to an arc like this, so that everyone isn’t confused all
at once.
Rating: 8/10
Like I said, I don’t think this episode is a whole lot of fun to watch,
but it was necessary for this plot arc to open like this, at least to
some extent. That's it for this week. Next time: Jakotsu! Bwahahaha...
