The Stealthy Poison-user Mukotsu

Review for Episode 104: The Poison-Using Stalker, Mukotsu
Version Reviewed: Japanese
Reviewed By: Amy Ishida
Opening: Grip! By Every Little Thing
Ending: Shinjitsu no Uta by Do As Infinity
Summary:
During the fight with Jakotsu and Inuyasha, Mukotsu decide to show up and interfere with the battle by releasing poisonous smoke. At this point, they have devised a plan of Jakotsu taking care of Inuyasha and Mukotsu taking care of the rest of the group. Mukotsu ended up poisoning Kagome but Sango and Miroku came to help just in time. Although, they were no match for Mukotsu and Kagome was captured into a house. Mukotsu then proceeded to conduct a wedding ceremony with Kagome as the bride. At this very moment, Inuyasha is fighting Jakotsu. Shippou arrived at the scene and delivered the news of Kagome to Inuyasha and managed to get away from Jakotsu. Miroku, Sango and Kirara came to help Kagome again but the poison got to them. With a little bit of strength left, Kagome plunges chopsticks into Makotsu’s throat in order to get the shikon shard out but failed and angered Makotsu. In a time of total despair, Sesshoumaru shows up and kills Makotsu. Inuyasha finally arrived but Kagome, Sango and Miroku all fell unconscious due to the amount of poison that was taken in. According to Jakotsu and Renkotsu’s conversation, they won’t last past sunset.

Opinions:
I found this a rather odd and freaky episode. Although, it could be just me but Mukotsu was totally crazy and scary. There also wasn’t much suspense into the episode, just introducing another shininchitai and killing him off pretty easily. Despite that fact, the character development for Mukotsu was pretty good. You got to see him using the poison, his personality and obviously the fact that his ugly face shamed him and created painful experiences. There was a hint of a sad moment and pity for him knowing that fact. Jakotsu was just the same and added the comedy-relief we needed but not as much since the episode was not focused on him. What surprised me the most was the appearance of Sesshoumaru. Even though he denied that he saved them on purpose, his appearance was unpredictable. The whole time I just thought that right then, Inuyasha will come to the rescue as always. He didn’t though and it totally changed the situation. Signs of regret from him were shown near the end of the episode. Rin and Kohaku’s relationship was also shown and improved even if it was just for a brief moment. Rin could’ve easily reported that she saw Kohaku to Jaken or Sesshoumaru but her thoughts show that she had no intention of doing so. She was worried for his safety and did not want Sesshoumaru to harm Kohaku. Although, this might just be Rin’s natural instinct and kindness but she definitely cares for him.
Rating:
7/10
It wasn’t much of an entertainment or suspense-filled episode to watch but the ending definitely brought your interest up. It showed a lot of things that could’ve been portrayed throughout the episode and left off not knowing what will happen to Kagome, Sango and Miroku.

Reviewing: Episode 104 (Japanese)
Summary:
This episode opens with the fight between Inuyasha and Jakotsu, but it’s
quickly interrupted by a poisonous fog that Mukotsu releases. Jakotsu
doesn’t seem all too happy about this, and after a brief interlude
showing Sesshoumaru searching for Kohaku, he states his opinion to
Mukotsu during their brief conversation. They also discuss the other
members of the Shichinintai. Meanwhile, Shichinintai member #4:
Renkotsu, is calmly destroying all of the humans at a temple so that
it can be used for his own purposes.
Inuyasha goes off to chase Jakotsu, which sets the stage for Kagome and
Shippou to go wandering around without protection, as usual. They
encounter another kind of poisonous fog, and Mukotsu reappears shortly
thereafter. Sango and Miroku show up to try and save them, but Mukotsu
nails them all with still more poison. Shippou escapes to search for
Inuyasha, but Kagome is captured.
Inuyasha locates Jakotsu quite quickly and gives him the “I totally
need to kill you, you weirdo” look, and they start sword fighting. They
are interrupted by Shippou, and Inuyasha leaves when he hears that
Kagome and the others are in danger, courtesy of Shippou’s little
hobbyhorse (isn’t it cute, now ^-^).
Back at the…err..Mukotsu hut thingy, Mukotsu seems to be trying to
marry an immobile Kagome. Bleargh. Miroku and Sango try to save her,
again, but Mukotsu paralyzes them with poison, again. Kagome also tries
to kill him by removing his shikon shards, but her attempts only serve
to enrage him, and he starts strangling her. Luckily, Sesshoumaru
appears at this moment. He’s interested in the fact that Mukotsu isn’t
affected by his dokkasou (because Mukotsu has built up a resistance to
all kinds of poison), but quickly wearies of his antics and slices him
in two with Tokijin. It seems that Sesshoumaru is only interested in
Naraku’s whereabouts, and leaves after Inuyasha tells him that the
Shichinintai are Naraku’s minions. Unfortunately, Kagome, Sango, and
Miroku seem to be quite thouroughly poisoned by the end, and we are
informed that they probably only have until sunset to live. To close,
there is a short conversation between Renkotsu and Jakotsu, and our
first shot of the 5th member: Ginkotsu.

Review:
Well, I must say that I’m glad that there was only one episode centered
on Mukotsu. So many poison attacks. >-< Other than Mukotsu’s rather
boring fighting style, I really like this episode. It’s clear that
this episode is leading up to something, and the fact that Sesshoumaru
is actually logically incorporated into it is a nice touch. We also
learn a very important piece of information. None of the Shichinintai
seem to know Naraku, but it’s clear that their ‘oh-aniki’ (like ‘big
brother’, sort of) does. We assume that they refer to their leader, who
must be quite powerful to have been approached by Naraku. Ah, the
intrigue.
Rating: 9.5/10
This episode is quite interesting, and moves at a great pace. It gives a
lot of information that will be useful later, making it pretty
important. The only problem with this episode is that Mukotsu’s attacks
are really boring, so there’s really no variation to the battle scenes.
Other than that, it’s very entertaining.
