James married first c1837 (or 1839) in Kentucky (or Ohio?) to Tabitha A "Tempest" Morgan (d/o John Morgan who was a wagonmaker). Tempest was born c1822 in Kentucky (or Ohio?) and died February 1861 in Bunceton, Cooper County, Missouri. After Tempest's death, James married second to Sarah Ellen Smith who was the widow of George Lloyd who died c1861. Sarah was born June 25, 1835, in Cooper County, Missouri and died September 30, 1922 (some sources have her death as April 1923) in Pilot Grove, Cooper County, Missouri. She is buried in the Pilot Grove Cemetery, Pilot Grove, Cooper County, Missouri. Her father's first name is not known, but, her mother's name was Nancy Alison of Virginia.
James and Tempest had the following known children:
James Piat (age 20-30) with wife (age 15-20) and two sons under 5 appeared on the 1840, Clark County, Indiana, federal census page 284. Also in Clark County were Andrew and William Piatt.
By the 1850 census, James was in 10th District, Cabell County, Virginia, p 62, as follows:
This family was enumerated 857/857 pg 111 (Ancestry.com image 23/39). It looks like 'Peatt' - but there is dot over the 'e'. Is there any connection to the Mary Pyatt and children on the 1860 census in Henry County, Missouri with the Nathan Dunn family? Nathan Dunn and family were in Cooper County, Missouri, on the 1850 census.
Shortly after this enumeration, Tempest died (February 1861) and James married second to Sarah Ellen Smith Lloyd who was also widowed in 1861.
James and Sarah had the following known children:
By the 1870 census of Boonville, Clear Creek Township, Cooper County, Missouri, James and his family appear as follows:
Three of James' children were living in Benton County, Missouri: Robert and wife Mildred with their children; Harriet Mallott with her husband, George, and children along with her younger sister, Cordelia.
My abstracts for 1900 census were from soundex cards which did not list anyone without a child under the age of ten in their household. So, I need to look for additional Piatts in Cooper County for 1900.
I do not have abstracts for Cooper County from the 1910 census, however, I believe Sarah lived with her son, James Madison Piatt, in Clear Creek Township.
On the 1920 census, Sarah is living with James and Belle in Clear Creek Township, Cooper County, Missouri, as follows:
This family was enumerated #26/75/8/25. Three of James' sons were living in Pilot Grove Township, Cooper County, Missouri.
An undated and unidentified obituary of James Henry Piatt from the files of descendant Pat Eickoff states that James died at 10:30 p.m. on 7 February, that he married Tabitha Morgan in 1839 and moved to Missouri in 1853. The obituary states that James had twelve (not ten) children by his first wife, with eight, four sons and daughters of this first family surviving him. According to this account Tabitha died in February 1861. James had nine children by his second wife, six sons and three daughters, with five of them surviving him. James raised two step-daughters, children of Sarah Smith Lloyd: Nancy Belle Lloyd who married James M Piatt of Pilot Grove, and Sarah Ellen "Sallie" Lloyd who married James L Dix of Blackwater, Missouri. He joined the old Concord Church, later known as the Union Baptist Church, where his funeral was held.
