Leander and Matilda Carpenter Pyatte

Leander Pyatt was born in 1828 (or 1826) to Joseph and Jean Brooks Pyatt and died February 10, 1863 in the Civil War. He was in Company A, 58th North Carolina Infantry of the Confederacy. His name was listed as 'Leander Pyett' pvt.

Leander married c1847 Frances Matilda Carpenter who was the daughter of Jacob and Margaret ? Carpenter born December 9, 1828 in Burke County (later Yancey, then Mitchell, now Avery) County, North Carolina. "Frances M. Pyatte" was named in the Will of her father Jacob Carpenter in 1849. Matilda died on June 28, 1902 in Mitchell County, North Carolina.

Leander and Matilda had the following known children:

Leander and Frances were listed on the 1850 census in Yancey County, North Carolina as follows:

This family was enumerated #515/541 pg 419. Just two pages away were Leander's parents and next door were Matilda's.

Leander and Frances were listed in Mountain Home Township, Watauga County for the 1860 census:

This family was enumerated #363/262 page 375A. Note there is no child named Caroline listed. What is the source for this child? Was it a misinterpretation of the name Sarah?

Leander Pyatte was killed during the Civil War on February 10, 1863. His death was mentioned by his nephew Jacob Carpenter (1833) in his "Anthology of Death": "Lander Pyatte age 40 dide Feb 10 1863. Wars fine man. Dide in ware."

Matilda is listed on the 1870 census as Matilda Pyatt in Lynvill, Mitchell County, North Carolina. I do not have the actual abstract.

On April 15, 1877 Frances Carpenter Pyatte married William Vance in Mitchell County, North Carolina. William was a son of John Vance and Elizabeth Davis. Their marriage record gave them as "William Vance", parents left blank, and "Matilda Pyatt", parents blank, married by L. D. Vance, JP. (Toe Valley Genealogical Society Newsletter, Volume 3, Number 4, June 1991, "Mitchell County Marriage Records 1865-1889" extracted by Rhonda Gunter).

William and Matilda Vance appeared on the 1880 census of Lynvill, Mitchell County, North Carolina:

Leander and Matilda's sons, Nick and Zebedee, were enumerated there with their families. Daughter, Ellen Pyatte Wilson, was on page 11A. I'm sure the married daughters were there too. I need to find Abe and Martha Johnson, William and Sarah Buchanan, J Wesley and Easter Franklin and Mary Jane (whichever husband she was married to at the time).

In the 'Mitchell County, North Carolina Index of Deaths, 1913-1940' I found:
