Now
we are going to use our freehand tool
to move our wizard hat. Make sure you have layer 3, the
layer with your costume, activated in the layer palette.
Left-click on your freehand tool
and set your Tool Options to Feather 0 and Antilias checked.
Left-click near your hat and hold down the left mouse button
while you draw around the outside of your wizard hat. Let
go of the mouse button and you will have marching ants around
the hat. Left-click on the scissors
to cut your hat out of the picture. On your top menu bar,
left-click on Selections, then left-click on Select None
in the dropdown menu to remove the marching ants. Right-click
in the center of the blue bar at the top of your image,
then left-click on Paste As New Layer on the dropdown menu.
Your hat will now be centered on a new layer. Make sure
that your hat layer is activated in the layer palette. Use
your mover tool
to move the hat to the correct position on your head. Drac
wanted his hat to sit straighter on his head, so we went
to the top menu bar and left-clicked on Image, then left-clicked
on Rotate in the dropdown menu. For Drac's wizard hat, we
selected Right, Free 20, and made sure that All layers was
not checked. We used the mover tool
to do some final adjustments on the position of the hat.
Now we want to get rid of all that extra canvas space! Select
your crop tool
and select Crop Settings in the Tool Options window. In
the Crop Area window, check Select opaque area-merged. This
will surround the area around your entire image with a solid
line box. In the Tool Options window select Crop Image.

At
this point you can add accessories, your name, or other embellishments.
Contrary to popular belief, you don't have to merge layers
before saving your picture. When you are happy with your costume,
you have two main save options. You can save your picture
as a jpg or a gif image. If you don't need to save your picture
with a transparent background, use the jpg option for better
clarity and no "jaggies." If you want a plain white
background, just go to File, Export, JPEG Optimizer, and set
the compression value to somewhere between 10 and 20. Left-click
on OK and in the next window choose where you want to save
your picture and give it a file name. The optimizer will automatically
merge your layers and save your picture with a white background. |

This
is Drac in his finished costume.
This picture is saved in jpg format.

|
If
it is necessary for you to save your picture with a transparent
background you will save it in gif format. (Do not add drop
shadow or any other partially transparent effects to any image
you want to save with a transparent background.) To do this,
you will use File, Export, GIF Optimizer. We suggest you do
not use the Wizard. When the GIF Optimizer window opens, click
on the Partial Transparency tab. Select Use a 50% dither pattern
and No, use the existing image color at 100% opacity. The
rest of the settings should be correct at their default settings.
Select OK and choose where you want to save your image and
give it a name. |
